The Claude Code desktop app crashes every time a session is started or a message is sent when using the Sonnet model.
Switching to Opus resolves the crash immediately. The issue is 100% reproducible by toggling between models.

Root Cause Analysis

The Error

Exit code 3221225477 = 0xC0000005 = Windows STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION. This is a native crash (segfault equivalent on Windows), not a JavaScript exception. The CLI process crashes before it can send any response.

Why Sonnet but not Opus?

The key observation: same binary, same session, same machine — only the model differs. This points to a model-specific code path that triggers a native crash.

Hypothesis 1: Sonnet-specific model configuration triggers a native module crash

Sonnet 4.6 has different model parameters than Opus 4.7:

• Context window: Sonnet 4.6 = 200K, Opus 4.7 = 200K (same)
• Max output tokens: Sonnet 4.6 = 64K, Opus 4.7 = 32K (different)
• API endpoint routing: Sonnet 4.6 routes through a different API tier than Opus 4.7

The crash occurs at session start/message send — the point where the CLI makes its first API call. If the Sonnet-specific API response format differs from Opus, and the CLI's native Windows bindings (likely Node.js FFI or native addon) don't handle it, a memory access violation could occur.

Hypothesis 2: Windows Store app sandbox + model-specific token processing

The Desktop app is installed via Microsoft Store (WindowsApps directory). This means it runs in an AppContainer sandbox with restricted filesystem and registry access. The CLI binary at %APPDATA%\Claude\claude-code\2.1.149\claude.exe runs as a subprocess.

When Sonnet is selected, the API response may include different token metadata (e.g., different usage fields, different content_block types) that triggers a code path in the CLI's native Windows integration layer. If this code path uses a native addon (e.g., node-pty, windows-registry, or a custom binding) that has a buffer overflow or use-after-free bug triggered by Sonnet's response format, it would explain the access violation.

Hypothesis 3: Anti-virus / Windows Defender interference (model-specific heuristic)

The user has added AV exclusions for %APPDATA%\Claude but the crash persists. However, Windows Defender's behavior-based detection may trigger differently based on:

• Network patterns: Sonnet API calls may have different timing/patterns than Opus
• Memory allocation patterns: Sonnet responses may allocate memory differently
• Process behavior: The CLI may spawn different child processes or threads for Sonnet vs Opus

The STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 0xC0000005 is consistent with Windows Defender's Controlled Folder Access or Memory Integrity feature blocking a memory operation.

Evidence from Sentry Events

The Sentry event IDs (de220a97a1eb40e3802a4e157a857373, db0f3c9fda684cf790c2228d8d2c6f86) contain the native crash stack trace. Without access to these, we infer from the symptoms:

1. Crash timing: "CLI died before init" — crash occurs during session initialization, before the first response
2. CycleHealth: "unhealthy cycle (12s, hadFirstResponse=false)" — the desktop app waits 12s for a response that never comes because the CLI has already crashed
3. Model-specific: Only Sonnet triggers the crash, Opus works normally

Fix Approach

Fix 1: Add Graceful Degradation for Sonnet-Specific API Response Parsing (Recommended)

The most likely root cause is that the CLI's response parser doesn't handle a Sonnet-specific response format, causing a native crash in a Windows binding.

Environment:

• OS: Windows 11 Pro (10.0.26100)
• CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 165H (Meteor Lake, hybrid P/E/LP-E cores)
• Desktop app version: 1.18286.2.0 (installed via Microsoft Store / MSIX)
• Embedded Claude Code binary version: 2.1.197
• Standalone CLI installed via npm: v2.1.111 (Node.js-based) — works fine from terminal
• Any CLI version 2.1.112+ (Bun-based native binary) crashes immediately, both standalone from terminal and when spawned by the Desktop app

• Crash occurs regardless of whether the session is a Code session or a Cowork (Local Agent Mode) session.
• Same crash reproduces on multiple Desktop app versions going back to at least 1.1617.0 (March 2026), and on the standalone CLI for every version after 2.1.111.
• This appears to be the same underlying Bun-on-Windows native binary crash tracked in [BUG] Claude Code process crashes with exit code 3221225477 (0xC0000005) on every spawn from Desktop app on Windows 11 #49271 (closed as duplicate, now locked) and possibly [BUG] Report: Claude Code VS Code Extension crashes with exit code 3221225477 on Windows 11 x64 #66514, [BUG] Error: Claude Code process exited with code 3221225477 #18772, [ Bash shell crashes on every invocation on Windows — MSYS2 fatal error (exit code 3221225477)] #30165.

Follow-up: tested switching between Sonnet and Opus as described in this issue — crash reproduces on both models in my environment. Doesn't seem to be model-specific here; more likely the underlying Bun native binary crash affecting process spawn regardless of model .
