On macOS, the Claude desktop app's message input box does not accept any text input — in existing conversations AND brand-new ones.

What Should Happen?

Other apps type fine (only Claude is affected). Persists after: clearing app cache, full uninstall + reinstall, wiping the app data folder for a fresh state, and multiple Mac reboots.

Summary

On the macOS desktop app, text input in the Code (Claude Code) tab is completely broken — typing freezes the session or crashes it, and the input field is unresponsive. The Chat tab works perfectly (typing/sending is fine). The issue is isolated to Claude Code mode.

A loading spinner (top-left of the conversation pane) spins indefinitely, as if the session never finishes connecting/loading, and the input stays locked. In some cases the input placeholder/cursor disappears (ProseMirror).

This affects all Code sessions, including brand-new ones — not just large/old sessions.

Environment

• Other apps accept keyboard input normally (not an OS-wide input issue)

What works vs. doesn't

• ✅ Chat tab — text input works
• ❌ Code tab (Claude Code) — text input freezes/crashes; spinner spins forever; input locked
• ❌ Standalone Claude Code CLI (official install, v2.1.183) — claude --version works, but the interactive TUI (claude, claude --resume) renders a blank screen and never accepts input

Steps to reproduce

1. Open the desktop app
2. Switch to the Code tab (Claude Code)
3. Open any session (or start a new one)
4. Try to type in the input box → input is unresponsive / freezes / crashes

Troubleshooting already tried (all failed)

• Cleared app caches (Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache, Session Storage)
• Full uninstall + reinstall
• Wiped the app data folder (~/Library/Application Support/Claude) for a clean first-run state
• Multiple full Mac restarts
• Logout / login
• Rolled back to an older app version (via Time Machine) — same behavior
• Checked/temporarily removed shell config (~/.zshrc)
• Verified no hooks/MCP in ~/.claude/settings.json (clean)

Notes

This looks related to #55721, #56130, and #58536, but I'm filing because it persists across reinstall/rollback/fresh-data and is specifically isolated to Code mode while Chat works, which may help narrow the cause (agent/shell initialization for Code mode rather than the Electron input layer alone).
