What Should Happen?

I have the Max 5x account. The browser has it already logged in the account. It should direct me to get code so I can paste it back into the terminal.

3. Type c to copy the link and open it in a browser
4. The page raises "Claude Max or Pro is required to connect to Claude Code
   Sign up for a Max or Pro subscription to connect your account, or use your API key."

Claude Code always raises "invalid API token" without regular patterns, in days or weeks. Previously, I had to log in again. However, this time, I cannot even authenticate anymore.

I am a researcher leveraging Claude Code to help my daily work and do not programmatically use it in any way. The interruption really affects my workflow, and I have to transfer to alternatives.

Still hitting this exact issue on Claude Code v2.1.200 (VS Code extension), Windows. Confirmed active Pro subscription (billed within the last 24 hours), fully uninstalled/reinstalled the extension with a clean storage folder, restarted the machine entirely — same "Claude Max or Pro is required to connect to Claude Code" message every time, no OAuth scope error shown this time, just straight to this screen. Since this issue is marked closed but the exact symptom is still reproducing on a newer version than originally reported (2.1.186), wanted to flag that whatever fix landed doesn't seem to have resolved it for everyone.
