Known Issues

680x0 Macs

In order to get a 680x0 Macintosh to mount a volume over TCP/IP, you need to:

  1. Install 7.5.x with OpenTransport 1.3 (I have not tried older systems, but it may work).
  2. Copy an AppleShare client file (which appears in the Chooser) from MacOS 8.0 to your system 7.5.x installation, or...
  3. Install MacOS 8.0 on your system if you can.

The issue is that most 680x0 Macs, like SE/30, Color Classic, and Quadra 700 will crash when you attempt to mount a TCP/IP volume on Haiku UNLESS you are running AppleShare Client 3.7.1 from MacOS 8.0. This is the ONLY AppleShare client I've found to work with 68K macs and AppleShare over TCP/IP. You will find that MacOS 8.1 will crash when mounting an AppleShare over TCP/IP volume, so you need to copy the AppleShare Client from MacOS 8.0 to your 8.1 installation.

Other AppleShare Clients can mount TCP/IP shares from MacOS 9 systems without any issue. I have not been able to determine what MacFile for Haiku is doing wrong that causes the clients to crash, I am following the spec to the letter. I am continuing to investigate this.

Renaming files & directories

Renaming files and directories to long names: For files with long names (longer than 32 characters), you can read them from the server and copy them to the server. However, you cannot rename an existing file on the server to a longer name. I don't know why this is, the client stops the action without even making a request to the server, so this looks like a client issue.

Tested Mac Clients

Tested Clients: This server has only been tested with MacOS 7.5.3, 7.6, 8.0, 8.1, 9.2.1, MacOS X 10.4 & 10.5 clients. Please let me know if any other clients work (or don't). For 68K machines, all OS versions were tested with AppleShare Client 3.7.1 and OpenTransport 1.3.

Changing Passwords

There appears to be a bug in the MacOS X AppleShare client that prevents the changing of passwords when the password is expired. This is supposed to be allowed but I cannot find a way around it.
