AoE2RMSIDE 1.0.0
AoE2RMSIDE 1.0.0 is the first release: a free, open-source Windows editor for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition random map scripts. Write a script and see the map it creates, without starting the game.
Highlights
- See the map while you type. AoE2RMSIDE has its own map generator. The preview follows every edit, stage by stage, in a top-down or Diamond view.
- An editor that helps. Suggestions where you type, plain explanations on hover, mistakes found as you type and fixed in one click, for RMS and XS.
- Map tests. Check your map on many seeds at once, find the rare broken seed and jump straight to it in the preview.
- Live tests in the game. With AoE2Control 1.1.1 or newer installed, one click starts a single-player match with your map, seed and lobby settings.
- Map to code and back. Select part of the map to see what is there and jump to the line that placed it; the cursor in a block highlights its tiles on the map.
- Deploy as a mod, with a map icon drawn from your map.
- 20 interface languages, dark and light themes.
Compatibility
- Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit.
- Verified game versions: 101.103.54800.0 and 101.103.48987.0. Other versions still work with a linked game folder and are marked as unverified. See COMPATIBILITY.md for how closely the preview matches the game and its limits.
- The game is optional: writing, previewing and testing work without it. Linking your game folder adds the game's own maps and includes, deployment and live testing.
- Live testing needs a separately installed AoE2Control 1.1.1 or newer and refuses to run in multiplayer.
Install
- Download the installer (
AoE2RMSIDE-1.0.0-win32-x64-setup.exe) or the portable ZIP (AoE2RMSIDE-1.0.0-win32-x64.zip) below. Checksums are inAoE2RMSIDE-1.0.0-SHA256SUMS.txt. - The builds are not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn on first start; choose "More info", then "Run anyway".
- The app checks GitHub once at startup for a newer release and shows a note in Output when one exists. It never downloads or installs anything by itself.
Known limitations
- A script using something rare that none of the compared maps used can still produce a different map than the game. Output names such commands.
- Scripts beyond 65,536 generation steps, and maps larger than 512 × 512 tiles, are refused instead of approximated.
