[Bug]: explorer tree is unusably slow filtering files

What happened?

If you have a few hundred files in the tree and you start typing in the filter every character immediately becomes dog-slow to type. 10 seconds between each key-stroke. Instead of faster because there's less to draw below it just crawls to a halt until you hit enter.
