IDEA Lab Canvas Editorial Checker v1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

Bugfix release — supersedes v1.1.0.

Fix

The 📌 Auto-open on this site toggle didn't work (clicking it did nothing, always stayed 'off'). This was caused by a Chrome security restriction: permission prompts can only be triggered by a direct user click inside an extension page, not via a message relayed from the page content. Turning the toggle on now opens a small confirmation popup window — click Allow on this site there to grant the one-time, site-scoped permission; the panel's toggle then updates correctly.

How to install / update

  1. Download idea-lab-canvas-editorial-checker-v1.1.1.zip below and unzip it.
  2. chrome://extensions → Developer mode on → Load unpacked → select the unzipped folder (or, if you already have v1.1.0 loaded, remove it first and load this one, or replace the old unzipped folder's contents with the new ones and click the reload icon on the extension's card).
  3. Open a Canvas page and click the toolbar icon to run a check.

IDEA Lab Canvas Editorial Checker v1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

Pre-built, ready-to-load Chrome extension for the media/editorial team.

What this is

A read-only, offline Chrome extension that checks Canvas LMS course content (Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Syllabus) against the House Style and Conventions Guide, plus general proofreading and inclusive-language checks. No data ever leaves your machine, no API keys, nothing is ever edited automatically.

New in this release

  • Optional 📌 Auto-open on this site toggle — keeps the panel open and auto-refreshing as you navigate between Canvas pages, instead of needing to click the toolbar icon on every page.
  • The toolbar icon now shows a brief error badge instead of silently failing (e.g. when clicked on a restricted chrome:// page).
  • New notepad + pen toolbar icon (replacing the placeholder).

How to install (for colleagues — no coding required)

  1. Download idea-lab-canvas-editorial-checker-v1.1.0.zip below and unzip it anywhere on your machine.
  2. In Chrome, go to chrome://extensions.
  3. Turn on Developer mode (top-right toggle).
  4. Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
  5. Open a Canvas Page/Assignment/Discussion/Syllabus and click the toolbar icon to run a check.

See the repo README's "Chrome extension" section for full usage details.
