Miyoo Flip BaseOS v1.3.0

@apommel apommel released this 23 Oct 20:24

Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

This release focuses on power consumption and battery life improvements It may improve the battery life by up to 1 hour while WiFi and BT are off. It includes the following changes:

  • The device starts after pushing the power button for only 500 ms while charging (instead of 2 s), consistent with behavior while not charging
  • The DDR clock rate was boosted by miyoo_inputd registering many stick events per second, making it virtually clamped at its max frequency. SYS_STATUS_BOOST is now disabled, allowing DDR to scale normally with load (~150 mW)
  • Cut off power to the radio chip when both WiFi and BT are off (~300 mW)
  • Allow to charge at up to 2500 mA while off if the charger allows it (up from 1500 mA, already enabled when device is on)
  • Fixed a delay in DHCP, allowing to connect to WiFi in less than 10 s instead of more than 30 s

The battery gains may be less in SpruceOS, as there was already a clamp on DDR frequency, and logic to cut off the radio chip. It will however not conflict.

Miyoo Flip BaseOS v1.2.0

@apommel apommel released this 19 Oct 15:47

Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

This BaseOS release includes some further improvements to work better with SpruceOS, made collaboration with the development team, plus some other improvements for the update process:

  • refactoring of rcK, with better shutdown behavior, including unmounting of /usr overlays and swapoff
  • do not repair a FAT partition that would be in use
  • do not update partitions that are unchanged when updating from a .bosupd file
  • allow proper update from a pre-release

The last fix is important for users who updated to the last beta version. If you have it installed, you will not be able to update automatically to the latest update using the .bosupd file. This is because a bug was causing pre-releases to be considered more recent than stable releases by the update script. If you are in this case, you'd need to do a full re-flash of the SD card. Make sure to do a back-up if you had anything under the BASEOS partition.

Miyoo Flip BaseOS v1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@apommel apommel released this 08 Oct 16:15

This release for BaseOS for Miyoo Flip fixes a bug introduced in 0.6.0. Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

Low-speed USB devices can now be connected on the USB top port of the device. This was not working as the OHCI init step was disabled in 0.6.0 to reduce boot time. Re-enabling that costs around of 60 ms of boot time (initially around 120 ms, but the low-speed USB companion for the WiFi was disabled in the device tree as this one is always high speed).

@apommel apommel released this 07 Oct 19:00

Stable release for BaseOS for Miyoo Flip. Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

This includes all the tested features you expect from BaseOS for Miyoo Flip, with a < 3.0 s hand-off to front-end and working HDMI hot-plugging. Compared to the previous pre-release, it includes the following improvements:

  • A dirty FAT partition on either SD card will be repaired automatically at boot.
  • BaseOS now reads a baseos.conf from the FAT partition, following the syntax defined by upstream H700 BaseOS. It allows to set the hostname and SSH password.

Pre-release for BaseOS for Miyoo Flip. Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

This patch release simply allows the mainline U-boot to work when the CPU regulator is missing or faulty. This should not happen on any normal device, but it appeared at least on one device. With this patch, this device can boot, but the CPU is locked at 1104 MHz (same as on stock).

@apommel apommel released this 23 Sep 19:05

Pre-release for BaseOS for Miyoo Flip. Read the installation instructions in INSTALL.md.

This is the biggest update to BaseOS for Miyoo Flip yet, it allows to reduce boot time by a whopping 1.8 s. To do so, I gave up the vendor U-boot and compiled a mainline U-boot with several customizations and optimizations:

  • CPU boosted at 1800 MHz during decompression and handed off to kernel at 1104 MHz (0.34 s)
  • zstd compressed kernel, decoder built without -mstrict-align or MINIFY and with -O2 optimization (0.22 s)
  • SD clock fix (card really at 50 MHz, 12 → 23.8 MB/s, 0.58 s)
  • data cache on before relocation (0.56 s)
  • blkcache holding the GPT (0.15 s)
  • Flip-specific control tree (0.03 s)

In addition the following optimizations, independent from U-boot, were also made in the branch:

  • WiFi probe race: usbcore.authorized_default=0, with rcS authorizing devices, removes a ~0.3 s stall that hit 11 of 20 boots (about 0.16 s on average, and less variance).
  • SDR104 tuning in 10° steps: the 113 ms timeout now hits 6 of 22 boots instead of 13 of 16 (about 65 ms on average)

Overall, the boot time improvements are as follows:

  • Hand-off: 3.73 → 1.94 s.
  • Frontend starts: 4.2 → 2.4 s.

The branch also brings fixes and new features, some made possible with the U-boot change:

  • HDMI hot-plugging is now possible on the device
  • The boot card does not drop out anymore out of suspend
  • adb reconnects after a suspend
  • A crash leaves a record in the logs
  • Faster and cooler charge while off because of lower CPU frequency and voltage

However, switching to mainline U-boot also has some downsides:

  • U-boot has no VOP2 driver and therefore cannot draw a bootlogo. It is therefore drawn by rcS, about one second later. With the reductions in boot time, this feels acceptable.
  • Similarly the charge screen while off is gone. Instead, the charge LED blinks three times to indicate the battery is too low to boot.

BSP U-boot was implementing a lot of the batter and state of charge logic, which had to be reimplemented as patches over mainline. I have tested those to work properly, but issues could appear, Be vigilant and report issues if they appear.
