| - question: What is Grok Build Mode? | ||
| answer: Grok Build Mode is an AI-powered app builder inside Grok that turns natural language prompts into working websites, apps, games, and interactive dashboards. You can preview the result in chat, refine it through conversation, and publish it to a shareable link. | ||
| - question: Is Grok Build Mode free? | ||
| answer: No. At launch, Grok Build Mode is available in Early Beta for SuperGrok Heavy subscribers. SpaceXAI has not announced a free tier. | ||
| - question: Who can use Grok Build Mode? | ||
| answer: During the Early Beta, Grok Build Mode is available on grok.com, iOS, and Android for SuperGrok Heavy subscribers. | ||
| - question: "What's the difference between Grok Build Mode and Grok Build?" | ||
| answer: Grok Build Mode is an in-chat AI app builder for creating and publishing applications from prompts. Grok Build is an open-source terminal coding agent designed for repository-based software development. | ||
| --- | ||
| Most AI coding tools stop at generated code. Grok Build Mode aims to go a step further by turning a prompt into a running web app that you can preview, iterate on, and publish without leaving the conversation. You describe what you want, Grok builds a working version live in the chat, and you publish it to a link anyone can open. | ||
| This post breaks down what Grok Build Mode is, how it works, who can use it in the Early Beta, and where it fits against a real backend when you move past a prototype. | ||
| # What is Grok Build Mode? | ||
| **Grok Build Mode is a new mode inside Grok that turns a plain-language description into a working website, app, game, or interactive dashboard, previews it inside the conversation, and publishes it to a shareable link.** SpaceXAI announced it in a [July 2026 launch post](https://x.ai/news/grok-build-mode) as an Early Beta feature. | ||
| Build Mode runs directly inside the Grok experience, so you can start building without setting up a local development environment. Grok writes the code and renders a live preview in the chat. You never touch the code unless you want to. When it is ready, you publish it to a URL you can hand to your team or anyone else. | ||
| If you have followed SpaceXAI's other releases, note the naming. This is **not** the same product as [Grok Build](/blog/post/grok-build-open-source), the open-source terminal coding agent and CLI. Grok Build Mode lives inside the Grok chat apps and is aimed at building and shipping self-contained apps without leaving the conversation. | ||
| # How Grok Build Mode works | ||
| The core loop is conversational. You tell Grok an idea, it builds a working preview, and you keep refining by talking to it. | ||
| * **Describe what you want.** Grok writes the code and renders a working preview inside the conversation. | ||
| * **Iterate in chat.** Change the layout, add a feature, or restyle anything by asking. No code editing required. | ||
| * **Publish to a link.** Ship to a `grok.me` link or a custom domain you own, then share it. | ||
| The example SpaceXAI highlights makes the flow concrete. The prompt "Build a peaceful 3D driving game: an endless forest I can drive through freely, with no missions and no timers" produced a playable game published at `driver.grok.me`. Every showcased project came from a single message. | ||
| The important shift here is that the preview is the product. Older AI coding assistants hand you text and leave running it as an exercise for the reader. Build Mode keeps the running app in front of you the whole time, so the feedback loop is "look at it, ask for a change, look again" instead of "copy, paste, run, debug." For non-developers that removes the entire toolchain. For developers it removes the ceremony of scaffolding a throwaway project just to test an idea. | ||
| # What you can build with Grok Build Mode | ||
| XAI groups Build Mode output into four categories. The interactive dashboards case is the one worth flagging for developers, since it uses connectors to pull in live data rather than static mockups. | ||
| | Category | What it covers | | ||
| | ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | ||
| | Websites | Landing pages, portfolios, and business sites | | ||
| | Apps | Working tools with real state and logic: planners, trackers, calculators, simulations, and internal utilities | | ||
| | Games | Arcade racers, puzzles, and interactive 3D worlds | | ||
| | Interactive dashboards | Live charts and filterable views built from connected data sources, explorable and shareable immediately | | ||
| Dashboards are the category with the most depth. SpaceXAI describes them as using connectors so Grok can pull in the data that matters to your business, then turn it into live charts and filterable views. That is closer to a real application than a static site, because the output reflects actual data rather than placeholder content. It is also the case where the boundary of a self-contained build shows up fastest, since business data usually lives in systems that need authentication, access control, and a persistent store behind them. | ||
| # Who can use Grok Build Mode right now? | ||
| **Grok Build Mode is available in Early Beta to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers on grok.com, iOS, and Android.** To open it, launch grok.com or the Grok app and choose **Build** from the mode switcher. | ||
| | Detail | Grok Build Mode (Early Beta) | | ||
| | ----------- | ----------------------------------------- | | ||
| | Access tier | SuperGrok Heavy subscribers | | ||
| | Platforms | grok.com, iOS, and Android | | ||
| | How to open | Select **Build** in the mode switcher | | ||
| | Publishing | `grok.me` link or a custom domain you own | | ||
| | Status | Early Beta | | ||
| Because this is an Early Beta gated behind the top subscription tier, treat availability and behavior as subject to change. If you are evaluating it for a team, confirm the current tier requirements on the [official Build Mode page](https://x.ai/news/grok-build-mode) before committing. | ||

| # Grok Build Mode vs Grok Build: clearing up the naming | ||
| The two products share a name but solve different problems, and mixing them up is easy. | ||
| | | Grok Build Mode | Grok Build | | ||
| | ------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------- | | ||
| | Where it runs | Inside the Grok chat apps | Terminal CLI on your machine | | ||
| | Who it is for | Anyone describing an app in plain language | Developers running an agent in their repo | | ||
| | Output | A published `grok.me` app or site | File edits, shell commands, multi-file changes | | ||
| | Code access | Optional, you never have to touch it | Full, it works directly in your codebase | | ||
| If your work is repo-based (multi-file refactors, backend features, migrations), the CLI is the right tool. We covered it in detail in [Grok Build is now open source](/blog/post/grok-build-open-source) and looked at the model behind it in [Grok 4.5: coding model benchmarks and pricing](/blog/post/grok-45-coding-model). Grok Build Mode is the no-code, publish-to-a-link path. | ||
| # What Grok Build Mode is good for, and where it stops | ||
| Grok Build Mode is strong at getting from idea to shareable artifact fast. That makes it a good fit for a specific set of jobs. | ||
| * **Prototypes and demos** you want to show, not describe. | ||
| * **Internal tools** where a single-user calculator or tracker is enough. | ||
| * **Landing pages and portfolios** that need to go live quickly. | ||
| * **Games and interactive experiences** that are self-contained by nature. | ||
| As with many AI app builders, Build Mode is best suited to rapidly generating and sharing prototypes. Teams building production software may eventually need additional backend infrastructure depending on their application's requirements. That is fine for a prototype and a problem for a product. Once you need multiple users, persistent data, authentication, file uploads, or server-side logic you control, a generated `grok.me` app is not a backend you own. | ||
| This is the same trade-off we flagged across vibe coding platforms in [The hidden costs of vibe coding platforms](/blog/post/hidden-costs-of-vibe-coding-platforms). | ||
| # Adding a real backend to a Grok Build Mode app | ||
| When a Build Mode prototype earns its keep and needs to become a real product, the missing piece is almost always the backend. That is where [Appwrite](/docs/products/auth) fits, without asking you to rebuild the frontend Grok already produced. | ||
| If you're integrating Appwrite with a Grok Build Mode project, follow our guide on [using Appwrite with Grok Build](/docs/tooling/ai/grok-build) to connect authentication, databases, storage, and other backend services to your generated app. | ||
| * [Appwrite Auth](/docs/products/auth) handles sign-in, sessions, OAuth providers, and multi-factor auth so your app supports real users, not a single anonymous session. | ||
| * [Appwrite Databases](/docs/products/databases) gives you a persistent, queryable data layer with permissions, so state survives a page refresh and stays scoped per user. | ||
| * [Appwrite Storage](/docs/products/storage) covers file uploads, image transformations, and secure downloads. | ||
| * [Appwrite Functions](/docs/products/functions) runs server-side logic in the language of your choice for anything the client should not handle. | ||
| For hosting, [Appwrite Sites](/docs/products/sites) deploys the frontend directly from a Git repository, so you own the domain, the deployment pipeline, and the code rather than depending on a generated link. If you want a full walkthrough of taking a generated app to production, see [how to deploy vibe coding projects to production](/blog/post/deploy-vibe-coding-projects-to-production). | ||
| None of this dismisses Build Mode. Using Grok to sketch the interface and Appwrite to run the backend is a reasonable split: let the AI handle the first draft, then move the parts that need to be reliable onto infrastructure you control. | ||

| # Getting started with Appwrite behind your Grok Build Mode apps | ||
| Grok Build Mode lowers the cost of turning an idea into something you can click. The moment it needs real users and real data, you need a backend that was built for production, not a preview. | ||
| To wire one up, [create a project on Appwrite Cloud](https://cloud.appwrite.io) and connect the services your app needs: | ||
| * [Appwrite Auth documentation](/docs/products/auth) for authentication and user management | ||
| * [Appwrite Databases documentation](/docs/products/databases) for persistent, permissioned data | ||
| * [Appwrite Sites documentation](/docs/products/sites) for Git-based frontend hosting on your own domain | ||
| * [Appwrite AI tooling](/docs/tooling/ai) for connecting coding agents and MCP servers to your project | ||
| If you get stuck or want to see what others are shipping, join the conversation in the [Appwrite Discord](https://appwrite.io/discord). | ||
