Skritch 0.4.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 02:36
v0.4.1

Full Changelog: v0.4.0...v0.4.1

What's new in Skritch 0.4.1

Fixed

  • Retina screenshots export at their real size. Exports now keep the screenshot's 144 DPI, so a 500×500 capture pastes into TextEdit (and other apps that honor image size) at 500×500 instead of double size. Every pixel is still there; only the size tag was wrong.
  • What you see is what you export. Copying or saving in the middle of a crop now exports the crop on screen, not the previous one. Text you're still typing is included when you save or drag out the share tab.
  • Undo after nudging. Pressing ⌘Z right after moving a mark with the arrow keys now undoes the move, instead of removing the mark before it and losing redo.
  • A new image starts clean. Pasting, dropping, or auto-grabbing an image during a crop or while typing no longer carries the old crop or text over to the new image.
  • No more silent loss of a caption. Quitting, starting over, or pasting over an image now asks first when you have uncommitted text or an adjusted crop, and auto-grab waits too.
  • The toolbar matches your selection. Select a mark and the toolbar shows that mark's controls, whatever tool is active. Previously, with the arrow tool, selecting a rectangle showed the arrow's width slider.
  • Scrolling in the Save panel while zoomed in. Panning the zoomed canvas no longer blocks scrolling in the Save panel and Settings.
  • Pasting a file copied in Finder. ⌘V now opens the image file itself instead of its icon.

Improved

  • Copying the result is faster and lighter on memory: the uncompressed TIFF copy (about 57 MB for a 5K image) is only created if an app asks for it.

Already installed? brew upgrade --cask skritch. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, signed and notarized.

What's new in Skritch 0.4.0

New

  • Badge tool. Press B and click to drop a numbered callout: a filled circle in your color with the number inside, the same white halo as text, and it widens into a pill for longer values. Each click counts up on its own. Drag instead of clicking to carry the badge to exactly where you release it, and drag a placed badge's corner grip to resize it.
  • Start anywhere, or use letters. The toolbar shows the value the next badge will get. Type a number to start counting from there, or type a letter for A, B, C sequences (they continue past Z as AA, AB, like spreadsheet columns). The stepper nudges it up or down. Select a badge and the same field edits that badge's value.
  • Counting that stays sane. The next value always follows the badge you placed last, so undoing or deleting one rewinds the count instead of leaving a gap, and restarting at 1 partway through an image really does run 1, 2, 3. Switching tools never resets it.
  • Renumber Badges. Deleted number 2 out of five? Tools > Renumber Badges renumbers every badge 1 through n in the order you placed them, as one undo step. Badges are never renumbered behind your back.

Also

  • Badge size and outline live on the same Size slider and Off/White/Black picker as text, and your choices are remembered across launches.
  • Window minimum width grew (990 → 1120) to fit the badge tool's value field.

Already installed? brew upgrade --cask skritch. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, signed and notarized.

Skritch 0.3.2

What's new in Skritch 0.3.2

Improved

  • Smooth drawing on Retina screenshots. Dragging out an arrow, shape, highlight, or pixelate, and moving, resizing, or rotating an existing mark, used to re-render the whole image at full resolution on every mouse movement and visibly stutter on large captures. The mark you're working on is now drawn live at screen scale over the finished image, through the same renderer the export uses, so what lands on release is unchanged and the gesture runs at full frame rate.

Fixed

  • Drag the screenshot thumbnail straight into Skritch. The floating preview macOS shows after a screenshot (and drags from Photos or Mail) hand over a file promise rather than a file, and Skritch ignored them. They now load like any other drop.
  • One click moves the text cursor. With the text tool, clicking somewhere new while a text field was open only closed the field; a second click was needed to start typing elsewhere. A single click now commits the old entry and opens the new one.
  • A highlight no longer darkens where it crosses itself. One stroke stays a uniform tint however it loops back over its own path, live and after release. Separate highlights still deepen where they overlap.

Already installed? brew upgrade --cask skritch. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, signed and notarized.

What's new in Skritch 0.3.1

New

  • Line tool. Press L for a straight line with the same round-capped stroke, width slider, and Off/White/Black outline as the other marks. Hold Shift to snap to 45° angles, and drag either endpoint grip to adjust it later.
  • Rotate rectangles, ellipses, and text. Select a mark and drag the spin-arrow grip above it; hold Shift to snap in 15° steps. Everything follows along, the selection outline, the resize grips, hit testing, and the export. The grip tucks inside the image when a mark sits at the edge, so it's always reachable.
  • Labels on lines and shapes. Double-click a line, rectangle, or ellipse to attach a label. It sits centered on the mark in the mark's color with the signature halo, tilts with a line's angle (never upside-down), and sizes itself to the mark, resize the shape and the label rescales live. Double-click the label to edit it in place; clear the text to remove it.
  • Your tool options are remembered. Color, arrow/line/shape widths, outline choices, pixelate size, and text size now survive restarts.
  • Text size slider. The text tool gets a Size slider with the default ×1 exactly at center, it snaps there so you can always find your way back. It resizes selected text, live entries, and sets the default for the next label you place.
  • Haptic snaps. Shift-snapped lines and rotations, the size slider's ×1 detent, and pinch-zoom landing back at fit each give a small trackpad tick, one per snap, never while you hold a position. A new "Haptic feedback on snaps" toggle in Settings turns it off.

Fixed

  • Cmd-Z brings back the screenshot auto-grab replaced. With Auto-Grab Screenshots on, a new capture used to silently discard the previous canvas. Undo now swaps the old document back, annotations included.
  • Emoji no longer vanish from text. An emoji pasted into a text mark rendered while editing but disappeared the moment you committed. Color glyphs now export exactly as you see them.
  • The toolbar holds still while you drag a slider. On macOS 26, pressing any toolbar slider nudged the surrounding controls apart for the duration of the press (and the caption swap could shove them too). Every control now stays exactly where it is.

Also

  • Window minimum width grew slightly (950 → 990) to fit the new tool button.

Already installed? brew upgrade --cask skritch. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, signed and notarized.

v0.2.1
39cab94

Full Changelog: v0.2.0...v0.2.1

What's new in Skritch 0.2.1

Fixed

  • Auto-grab no longer replaces a screenshot you pasted yourself. With Auto-Grab Screenshots enabled, leaving Skritch and coming back could swap the canvas for the very image you had just pasted, discarding your annotations, zoom, and undo history. A manual paste now counts as already seen.
  • Panning stays responsive while zoomed in. Scrolling past the edge of the image used to bank up an invisible offset, so reversing direction did nothing until you had scrolled all of it back off. The pan now stops where the image does.
  • Pixelate keeps wide-gamut color. On Display P3 screenshots the mosaic was built through sRGB, which dulled saturated content underneath it. Blocks now match the colors around them.
  • Exported filenames stay sortable everywhere. The timestamp in names like Skritch 2026-08-19 at 11.32.48.png no longer follows your region's calendar or numerals.
  • Sharing cleans up after itself. Every drag-out and share used to leave a temporary folder behind. Each export now removes the previous one.

Also

  • Internal tidying in hit testing, event monitoring, and the renderer, plus new tests for pan limits, wide-gamut pixelation, and filename formatting.

Already installed? brew upgrade --cask skritch. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, signed and notarized.

What's new in Skritch 0.2.0

New

  • Live in the menu bar. Choose Dock, Menu Bar, or Both in the new Settings window (⌘,), with an optional launch at login. Menu-bar-only mode hides the Dock icon entirely.
  • Copy and paste annotations. Select a mark and ⌘C copies it, ⌘V pastes it back offset. The mark clipboard even survives pasting a new screenshot, so you can carry an arrow from one capture to the next.
  • Adjustable stroke width. Arrows, rectangles, and ellipses get a Width slider. Thin them down to circle fine detail; the classic chunky look stays the default.
  • Nudge with the arrow keys. Move a selected annotation 1 px at a time (⇧ for 10 px). A run of nudges undoes as a single step.
  • Start over with ⌘N. Clears the canvas back to paste-ready, asking first if you have unexported work.
  • Yellow. The palette grows to seven colors, on key 7.

Improved

  • Anything that would discard unexported annotations (quit, start over, paste-over) now offers Save… / Cancel / Don't Save instead of a bare confirm.
  • Auto-grab screenshots is now opt-in (Edit menu or Settings), so a fresh install never replaces your canvas unannounced.
  • While typing a text annotation, the toolbar stays clickable (switching tools commits your text), and ⌘A selects all in the field.
  • The color swatch is visually separated from tool controls, so it reads as the mark color, not the outline color.
  • Settings shows the app version.

Fixed

  • Tool tooltips now always match the button you're hovering.
  • The toolbar no longer collapses into a broken overflow menu at narrow window widths.

Also

  • Skritch is now open source under the MIT license.
  • Rumor has it the empty canvas enjoys a good skritch behind the ear 🐾 🐕
