Plasma Fusion 0.6.0

@archledger archledger released this 18 Oct 09:44
v0.6.0

Added

  • Copy text from the screen in one movement, from Meta+Shift+T, a new button in the top bar, the clipboard sheet or Quick Settings: draw a box around the text and it is on the clipboard as the drag ends, read with Tesseract, with a notification. The new plasma-fusion-copytext package shows Plasma Fusion's own selection in about a tenth of a second (the screen stays still under a light veil; Esc or a click ends it); without it, copy text uses Spectacle's selection.
  • Quick Look: select files in Dolphin and press Space to see pictures (moving ones play), PDF pages, text and code with its colours, songs and videos, a folder's size, or a thumbnail; the arrow keys go through the files, Enter opens the shown one. Also in the context menus of Dolphin and the desktop. The new plasma-fusion-quicklook package.
  • Live chips in the top bar while an app uses the microphone or the camera, shares the screen or controls the computer, someone is signed in over SSH, Spectacle records, or a timed Keep awake runs; a click names the apps, with Mute, Stop sharing and End.
  • Hide the top bar automatically, with an island at the top centre while it is hidden: what uses the camera, the microphone or the screen, a recording, Keep awake or the music; Plasma's volume, brightness and other notices show there too, with the island's own glyphs.
  • Snap groups: after a zone in the snap layouts flyout, the other empty zones offer your other windows; the windows snapped together minimize, restore and come forward together. Meta+Left/Right step a window through a half, a third and two thirds; snapped windows meet without a gap.
  • Window placement memory (KWin script, on with the setup): each app's window opens where and as big as you left it (KDE bug 15329).
  • Dynamic workspaces (KWin script, off until turned on): always one empty workspace at the end, empty ones go away.
  • The dock: Left or Right besides Bottom, Small / Medium / Large, window grouping on or off, the window count under an icon, a dock on every screen, and End Task… for an app that does not answer.
  • Touchpad gestures you set: three fingers in four directions and four-finger pinches can each open Overview, the desktop, the grid of desktops, All windows, the launcher, Quick Settings, notifications or snap layouts.
  • Export and import your settings: the page's settings and your panels with their widgets and shortcuts, in one file.
  • A Launcher group in the settings page: recent files, the Recent chip and the Places chip can each be turned off.

Fixed

  • The installer installs all six packages, Quick Look and copy text's selection included, and install.sh update from an earlier release adds them.
  • On KDE neon, Debian and Ubuntu the installer no longer leaves Plasma half updated: when installing Plasma Fusion would also upgrade part of Plasma (a system behind the release's packages), it stops and says to update the system first. Before, on a KDE neon still at Plasma 6.7.5, the desktop shell no longer started.
  • plasma-fusion status names every compiled part, Quick Look and copy text's selection included.
  • After an update in a running session, Meta+Left/Right move to the snap sizes at once; the Touchpad gestures group says when the snap script that does them is off.
  • A login over SSH or an app without an icon shows its kind's glyph in the island, not a blank page; removing top bars no longer logs errors; a new notification whose text wraps is no longer drawn over by the row below it.

Tested systems

Tested with Plasma 6.7 (6.7.5 on Fedora 44, Ubuntu 26.10 and NixOS; 6.7.4 on Debian testing) and Plasma 6.8 (6.8.0 on Arch and KDE neon; the 6.8 beta, 6.7.91, on Fedora 44). The eight-VM campaign on the release commit passed on Fedora beta, Arch beta, Fedora stable, Arch stable, Ubuntu 26.10, Debian testing, KDE neon and NixOS: installation, the login check after a fresh login, copy text's selection shown from KWin's pictures, zero recorded crashes at both checks and a clean restore. The depth features (window placement memory, snap groups, dynamic workspaces, copy text, Quick Look, live chips) passed their session scenarios on the test laptop.

Packages are available through Copr archledger/plasma-fusion for Fedora 44/45, AUR plasma-fusion, PPA ppa:archledger/plasma-fusion for Ubuntu 26.10, the attached .deb sets for KDE neon and Debian testing, and the tagged NixOS flake/module. There are now six packages; the main package recommends Quick Look and copy text's selection. Repository builds may take time to finish after publication.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/archledger/plasma-fusion/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh

To update an earlier installation: curl -fsSL https://github.com/archledger/plasma-fusion/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh -s -- update. After a package upgrade, run plasma-fusion update and log out and back in so the full desktop picks up the updated files. plasma-fusion status reports the installed version and login-check state.

The signed tag and SHA256SUMS.asc use release key F35053398E3C80FE20891B82C10B8492BD7F30C6 (public key in .github/release-signing-key.asc). Verify the checksum signature with gpg --verify SHA256SUMS.asc SHA256SUMS, then check the downloaded files against the signed sums. GitHub replaces ~ with . in Debian asset names; the installer handles this mapping and checks the original signed filenames.

Known limits

  • On Plasma 6.8.0 with KDE Frameworks 6.31 (Arch, KDE neon), KDE's file indexer can crash over and over once a file is added to the home folder, with or without Plasma Fusion (KDE bug 524392). The bug's workaround: a kde-baloo.service override with Environment=QT_QPA_PLATFORM=offscreen.
  • On KDE neon, update the system with Discover or sudo pkcon update before installing: sudo apt-get -y full-upgrade can stop at neon's own pinned downgrades and leave Plasma at an older version, and the installer then refuses (see Fixed).
  • Version-bound compiled parts must be rebuilt after a distribution updates KWin. Until then, the login check keeps affected parts off and explains the state. On an untested Plasma series the parts that depend on Plasma internals stay off until an update; the installer refuses unsupported systems.

Plasma Fusion 0.5.0

@archledger archledger released this 13 Oct 04:04
v0.5.0

Added

  • A clipboard sheet in Quick Settings, opened by the clipboard button and Meta+V, replaces Klipper's pop-up: the history newest first with search, images and copied files, stars shared with the stock Clipboard widget, Edit, QR code, Klipper's actions, Remove and Clear all, and an Emoji button.
  • Quick Settings can be edited: the pencil shows a remove badge on every tile and a tray of hidden tiles; drag or Ctrl+arrows to move, Delete or the badge to remove, add back from the tray or Reset. The order is shared by every Quick Settings on every screen.
  • The notification history is grouped by app with images, inline replies, app notification settings, and Open / Open Containing Folder on finished file copies; keyboard-driven cards.
  • Do Not Disturb with Plasma's durations (1 h, 4 h, this evening, tomorrow morning, until Monday) and a live "Until" time; it names the application holding it.
  • A Power mode chooser behind the tile's chevron (profiles, unavailable Performance with the reason, holders); a click switches Balanced to the last other profile instead of cycling.
  • Keep awake for 1 hour, 4 hours or until a chosen time, with the time left shown in the tile and the status pill.
  • Stock tray items appear in the top bar while active (open vault, print jobs, presentation mode, second screen, input method), without the expander arrow.
  • Optional system meters in the top bar (processor load, memory, network rates, temperature) with a details pop-up and System Monitor; power-aware update rates.
  • The launcher gains Recent and Places chips (file manager places, removable drives, recent folders) and Kicker's Hide Application; hidden apps are managed in its settings.
  • Alt+F2 opens KRunner again (Meta+S/Meta+Space/Alt+Space stay with the launcher; the search's last row hands its query to KRunner); the dock's Search button opens the launcher's search.
  • The dock shows file transfer progress on the app's icon, from Dolphin copies, downloads and Plasma's job tracking.
  • The lock screen offers Restart and Shut Down next to Sleep, Hibernate and Switch User, with a confirmation (KDE wishlist 336369).
  • On Plasma 6.8: the other unlock ways (smartcard, fingerprint, face, security key) as links under the password field, the last used way kept and a defunct one falling back with a message; the greeter is asked again while the prompt shows; two or more screens unlock on the first correct password, every screen with its wallpaper; the log-out screen shows its buttons on the pointer's screen and follows it.
  • Snapping recognizes KWin's quick tiles without their number or order, and the snap preview no longer starts processes inside KWin each time it appears.
  • Meta+Shift+T, and a button by the screenshot button, copy text from the screen through Spectacle's area selection and Extract Text.
  • Scrolling no longer changes the volume, keyboard layout or workspace when the wheel is still turning as the pointer crosses the bar's pills.

Fixed

  • The Quick Settings sheet fits its content again: no 14 px offset on the first opening after login (which cut off the last row) and no stale height after a scale change or a notification while closed.
  • The clipboard sheet no longer builds its page on every open (the openness a survey flagged): it opens in single-digit to tens of milliseconds rather than 160–216 ms, and no longer resizes after its first frame.
  • On Plasma 6.8, Plasma no longer crashes again and again at login after a monitor with a top bar was unplugged (the panel-size reads of a gone screen); Plasma Fusion 0.4.x has the same crash on 6.8.
  • plasma-fusion update no longer undoes layout changes (translucent top bar, tray items set to "Always shown", a removed pen menu, a switched desktop) and no longer restarts the shell when there is nothing to migrate (which also ended Keep awake).
  • A timed Do Not Disturb no longer ends while Plasma itself holds it; "Until tomorrow" after midnight ends at 06:00 that morning, not 29 hours later.
  • The dock's window previews no longer flicker and restart their thumbnails when a title or the active window changes; only the changed card updates.
  • Meta+N works right after the setup; the tablet home screen's edit mode works again (no more "ReferenceError: homeLoader is not defined" at every start in tablet posture).
  • The settings page waits up to 25 s for the shell (no more bogus "Did not receive a reply" right after a shell restart) and keeps drawing while it waits; the clock and dialogs open without warnings in the log, and Apply no longer writes back values changed while the dialog was open.
  • Uninstalling restores the login screen also when its look was written without Plasma Fusion's mark, and removes the boot splash when the root tools applied it.
  • Glass Solid (or High contrast, or the nearly-empty-battery tier) reaches the tablet launcher sheet and the Notification Centre; top bars added later follow the Glass level, "Solid top bar next to windows" and "Top bar on every screen"; a level chosen on a nearly empty battery applies when it recovers.
  • The on-screen keyboard stays available after an update when its policy is "On touch"; the Overview hot corner stays on when the setup runs again; switching off "Top bar on every screen" now lasts; the desktop's memory card shows binary units ("6.1 / 15.3 GiB").

Tested systems

Tested with Plasma 6.7 (6.7.5) and the Plasma 6.8 beta (6.7.91 on Fedora 44 and Arch). The fresh eight-VM campaign passed on Fedora beta, Arch beta, Fedora stable, Arch stable, Ubuntu 26.10, Debian testing, KDE neon and NixOS: installation, the login check after a fresh login, zero recorded crashes at both checks and a clean restore. Plasma 6.8.0 final (due 2026-10-14) will be retested separately.

Plasma Fusion 0.4.0

@archledger archledger released this 10 Oct 04:12
v0.4.0

Added

  • Disks & Devices back in the bar: a drive icon in the status pill while a USB drive, memory card, camera or phone is connected, and a Quick Settings tile and page to open, mount or safely remove it (a new device opens the page, as Plasma's own widget; an option in the widget's settings).
  • Keep awake switch in Quick Settings, blocking sleep and automatic screen locking until turned off, with a coffee-cup indicator in the status pill; its chevron opens Sleep blockers, the applications blocking sleep or locking, with a box to block or allow each.
  • Wi‑Fi hotspot tile on Plasma's own hotspot; the Wi‑Fi page starts and stops it and shows its name and password, and the tile says why when the radio cannot host one.
  • Wi‑Fi page: Airplane mode switch, as Plasma's Networks widget (Wi‑Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth off and back on; Bluetooth read and set over BlueZ, so it comes back even when the optional Bluetooth service is not loaded), and the VPN connections (plugin VPNs and WireGuard) with connect and disconnect; without Wi‑Fi the Wi‑Fi tile opens the VPN list.
  • Sound page: microphone and input volume and mute, input-device selection, per-application playback and recording volume, mute and device routing, and a menu on each device for its ports and the sound card's profiles, as Plasma's Audio Volume widget. Volumes above 100 % are kept, and with Plasma's "Raise maximum volume" the sliders reach 150 %.
  • Brightness page (the chevron next to the brightness slider): a slider for every display that can be dimmed and the keyboard backlight.
  • Media card: a seek bar with the track's time and, when several players run, a row of the players to choose one.
  • Clock calendar: selected-day events, event dots, calendar-provider and resource settings, Open calendar and a native KOrganizer Add event action; optional seconds and searchable world-clock time zones, shown with their local dates in the calendar popup.
  • Keyboard layout badge: right-click or press and hold lists the layouts, the wheel switches through them.
  • Launcher: the account row opens Account Settings, Switch User and Log Out; where the computer can hibernate, the Sleep button's menu offers Hibernate.
  • Power mode tile: skips Performance while the system holds it back and says why, names applications holding a mode, and shows a refused switch.
  • Dock: window previews with live thumbnails on a resting pointer (click to switch, close from there; an option in the dock's settings), a speaker on an app that plays sound to mute or unmute it, and the task manager's menu items (the app's own actions, Recent Files, Move to Desktop, Show in Activities, More window actions); the launcher's item menu can Keep in Dock an app.
  • With more than one screen, every screen's top bar has the status icons, the bell and Quick Settings; Meta+A and a newly connected drive open Quick Settings on the screen in use, and the settings are the same on every screen.

Fixed

  • Updating now replaces the desktop's QML at the next login: the Fedora packages of 0.3.0 and 0.3.1 gave their files the same time stamps, and Qt reused its compiled copy of a QML file while the time stamp was unchanged, so after updating from 0.3.0 KWin and Plasma kept running 0.3.0's snap script and dock. Every QML and JavaScript file now carries a time stamp derived from its content, in the Fedora and Debian packages; this update also replaces the compiled 0.3.0 copies that 0.3.1 users still run.
  • plasma-fusion restore (the uninstaller's first step) returns once the restarted shell is up, as the setup does: logging out right after it no longer brings kded and the portals back during the teardown, where a portal crashed (seen on Arch with Qt 6.12).
  • Tablet home screen: files on the desktop no longer show among the apps; a file dropped there offers widgets.
  • Choosing an entry in the launcher's right-click menu now runs it; switching off "Top bar on every screen" now lasts; the touch-gestures card closes when tablet mode ends.

Tested systems

Tested with Plasma 6.7 (6.7.5) and the Plasma 6.8 beta (6.7.91 on Fedora 44 and Arch), like 0.3.1.

Fixed

  • Snapped windows now reach the work-area edges while keeping the configured gap between neighbouring windows. Native split resizing, the first snap preview, Meta+Z layouts and per-output desktop previews use matching geometry.
  • Calendar tiles update their date after resume instead of continuing to show yesterday. The midnight timer rechecks the date in short steps; the launcher runs that timer only while a Calendar tile needs it.

Tested systems

Tested with Plasma 6.7 and the Plasma 6.8 beta (6.7.91 on Fedora 44 and Arch). The fresh eight-VM campaign passed on Fedora beta, Arch beta, Fedora stable, Arch stable, Ubuntu 26.10, Debian testing, KDE neon and NixOS. All 80 runtime snap/outline checks passed, with zero recorded crashes at both checks and successful installation/restoration. Plasma 6.8.0 final will be retested separately.

Plasma Fusion 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@archledger archledger released this 06 Oct 04:27
v0.3.0
b9ca95d

Tested with Plasma 6.7 (6.7.5) and the Plasma 6.8 beta (6.7.91 on Fedora 44 and Arch).
Plasma 6.8 support comes from that beta testing; anything Plasma 6.8.0 final needs will
come in a follow-up release.

  • The greeter's wallpaper can match the lock screen's treatment (greeter-apply.sh --login-image dimmed); the other choices are the Login board's blur with its veil (the default) and the same
blur without it. The greeter's clock and layout stay compiled into plasma-login-greeter.
  • The Plasma Fusion settings module gains an Icons section (Designed tiles / Real app icons) and a
Lock & Login section (notification cards and titles on the lock screen). High contrast now reaches
applications that follow the XDG settings portal, and the generated reference palette kits
(docs/parts/consistency.md) let apps built on other toolkits match the theme.
  • The live date patch on the Calendar tiles no longer shows as a seam: it paints the tile art's
own colours. The launcher shows Merkuro Calendar's live date again (its app list had a typo),
and GNOME Calendar keeps its own tile art: the patch only covers tiles that carry the art's
    fixed SEP 28.
  • The dock shows one tile per app: on a system without a web browser, the Browser pin
(preferred://browser) resolves to whatever handles HTML's text/plain parent type (Kate on a
minimal install) and the dock showed two identical Kate tiles. A preferred:// pin that
resolves to an app pinned explicitly is hidden while the explicit pin stays; it reappears once
the system has a real app for the role.
  • Setup waits until plasmashell has finished redrawing before it restarts it: a shell stopped
right after a live theme change could crash on exit while it still compiled the new theme's
shaders (seen with Mesa's software renderer in virtual machines).
  • On Arch, install.sh uninstall also removes the plasma-fusion-debug package that an AUR
    helper installs.
  • Ready for Plasma 6.8 (tested with the 6.8 beta): menus and drop-down lists are readable in
Plasma Fusion Light; the lock screen asks for the password even when the stock lock screen last
unlocked another way; split screen from the home screen and the launcher works again; the dock's
Meta+Alt+1..9 keys go through Plasma Fusion's own shortcuts; the tablet navigation starts from a
    defined state.
  • The window decoration supports the shadow-only style of Plasma 6.8 when built against
KDecoration 6.8: windows with the "Only shadow" window rule get the Plasma Fusion shadow and
outline without a title bar, instead of falling back to the app's own decoration. Builds against
    Plasma 6.7 are unchanged.
  • The log-out screen is Plasma Fusion's again on Plasma 6.8: 6.8's log-out greeter reads the
log-out QML from the shell package, so the screen ships in the org.plasmafusion.lockshell shell
package and the Plasma Fusion lock screen setup starts the greeter with that package through a
per-user D-Bus service override. Plasma 6.7 is unchanged (its greeter reads the Global Theme).
  • The launcher's Calendar tile shows today's month and day over the tile art (as the dock
already did) instead of the art's fixed SEP 28.

Plasma Fusion 0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@archledger archledger released this 03 Oct 14:53
v0.2.0
a2da7b5

The first release of Plasma Fusion: a KDE Plasma 6 desktop built from the Plasma Fusion design concept, with ideas from macOS, GNOME and Windows 11 on top of Plasma's Global Theme structure, in a dark and a light scheme, with a tablet posture for convertibles.

Tested with Plasma 6.7: 6.7.5 on Fedora 44, Arch, Ubuntu 26.10 and KDE neon, 6.7.4 on Debian testing, and NixOS unstable. Every system passed the release tests in a virtual machine: the installer in a real Plasma session, a new login with the Plasma Fusion desktop, launcher and lock screen, no crash, then uninstall back to the previous desktop (docs/parts/release-tests.md).

Install

curl -fsSL https://github.com/archledger/plasma-fusion/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh

The installer detects the system and installs through its channel, then runs the per-user setup in your Plasma session. --dry-run shows every check and the plan without changing anything; update, uninstall and status are the other modes (docs/parts/installer.md).

System Channel

Arch and derivatives AUR plasma-fusion
Kubuntu / Ubuntu 26.10 PPA ppa:archledger/plasma-fusion

other Debian or Ubuntu family systems with Plasma 6.7 or later the shared part (plasma-fusion_0.2.0-1_all.deb)
NixOS (unstable) the flake or the module in this tag (docs/parts/nixos.md)

What is in it

  • Four packages from one source and one version: plasma-fusion (themes, widgets, icons, fonts, KWin scripts, the setup tools) and the compiled window decoration, settings page and tablet navigation.
  • The plasma-fusion command: setup, update, status, restore, drop-user-copy.
  • The login check records only the tested Plasma series as tested: on a newer Plasma the parts that depend on Plasma internals stay off until a Plasma Fusion update, and a package update with new settings brings a notice to run plasma-fusion update.
  • Running setup again keeps your light, dark or automatic choice.

Verify

sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS

The key is in the repository as .github/release-signing-key.asc; it also signs the tag v0.2.0. The installer checks the same signature before it installs any release file.

Known limits

  • Plasma 6.8 is not tested yet: on 6.8 the installer refuses, and on a system that updates to 6.8 the login check keeps the version-bound parts off until a Plasma Fusion release lists 6.8.
  • The boot splash and the login screen styling are for Fedora only.
  • The tablet navigation is built against one KWin and needs a rebuild after every KWin update (Copr and the PPA rebuild it, AUR users rebuild the package; the login check keeps it off until then).
