Describe the request

The overwrite/insert bug is still unsolved to this day and it seems there's not much staff to work on it.
While the editor is supposedly based on Visual Studio Code's editor, they had the same bug and it's currently solved.
A nice feature would be to call an external editor if bugs are going to be unsolved for long.

There is already support for using an external editor. Arduino IDE will pick up any changes made externally to the sketch files as long as the sketch is in a saved state.
