A few things you need to know.

Tools - Normal Minecraft tools are disabled. Using Tinkers' Construct is required. A manual is provided.
Mining - Typical strip mining is primarily useless. Instead, look for ore chunks on the surface. These chunks will appear over very large deposits underground. Dig down from these surface deposits. Build and use a Prospector's Pick asap.
Armor - Use the Construct's Armory mod to make armor. Even when first starting out, stone armor is better than nothing.
