Why are we blocking gdmf.apple.com

I was having trouble with my MacBook not finding available updates and was constantly having to download the full OS with the latest version and then I looked at the /etc/hosts file and found that gdmf.apple.com was blocked with 0.0.0.0

Is there a reason why this is also there? if I removed it, is it going to brick my macbook at some point or should I not be worried?

The script/instructions in this repository does not add gdmf.apple.com to /etc/hosts.

Great question. gdmf.apple.com is used by macOS for Software Update and device enrollment verification. The legacy v1 script blocks it, which can break Software Update.

v3 and unleash do NOT block gdmf.apple.com or albert.apple.com — only:

• deviceenrollment.apple.com
• mdmenrollment.apple.com
• iprofiles.apple.com
• acmdm.apple.com
• The org-specific MDM host (if detected from activation record)

This means Software Update, iMessage, and iCloud continue to work normally.
