Miles 51.0.1-mac.4
π Highlights
Miles is GNOME Files (Nautilus) 51 on the Mac. It looks and works like Files on GNOME, and follows the Mac where the Mac has its own way of doing things.
New in this build:
- Fixed dragging files onto other applications (previously it errored with "file not found") (63f884c)
- Added the Homebrew install command to the README (33b6314)
π¦ Install
Requires Apple silicon and MacOS 15 or newer.
brew install astraldev/tap/milesAlready installed? Run brew upgrade miles.
You can also download Miles-51.0.1.dmg below and drag Miles to Applications. The download is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so the first time you open it, go to System Settings β Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
β¨ New in Miles, not in Files
- Uninstall: Right-click an app to move it to the Trash. You can also remove the settings and data it left in your Library.
- Apps: The Applications folder contains launchable apps (like Finder). You can also right-click to Show Package Contents.
- Cloud folders: iCloud Drive, Google Drive, and OneDrive show up in the sidebar automatically. Files stored in the cloud are marked with a small cloud icon.
- Sidebar: Lists the Mac's standard folders (Applications, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures), the startup disk, and your drives.
- Theme aware: Miles follows the look you set in System Settings. Folder icons take your accent colour, and app icons follow your icon style, in both light and dark mode.
- Blocked folders: When MacOS hasn't allowed Miles into a folder, Miles tells you and gives you a button to the right page of System Settings, instead of showing the folder as empty.
π§ Files features, made to work on the Mac
- Trash: Uses the Mac's Trash, the same one Finder shows. Restore puts a file back where it came from.
- Network: Servers on your local network are detected automatically. You can also connect to SFTP, WebDAV, FTP, and AFP servers by address.
- Search: Searching by file name works, with no index to build first.
- Archives: Archives are extracted by Miles itself, including on double-click.
β οΈ Known issues
- Restore: When several files are trashed at once, Restore may only be available for the first one.
- Permissions: After updating Miles, MacOS may ask for folder access again.
- Certificates: HTTPS and WebDAV servers that use a certificate you added to the Keychain yourself are not trusted.
π§ Not yet
- Searching inside the contents of files
- Windows shares (SMB), phones and cameras, online accounts, and NFS
- Extensions (including Open in Terminal)
- Thumbnails
- Saved passwords for servers
- Opening a folder as administrator
π Licence
Miles is under GPL 3.0 or later, the same licence as Files. THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md below lists every library the app includes, with its licence and source. Miles is an unofficial port, not made or endorsed by the GNOME Project or by Apple Inc. The icons are Yaru Icons, under CC BY-SA 4.0.
