This beta release adds an offline birding collection and local AI experience.

Important downloads

The APK does not include the Gemma model.

After installing:

  1. Open Settings or the Gallery challenge section.
  2. Select Download Gemma.
  3. Download the approximately 529 MB model.
  4. Enable Gemma summaries.

Without Gemma, Canopy still works offline using built-in summaries and deterministic challenges.

Canopy 5.4.0 Test Release

This is an early testing build of Canopy, an Android bird sound recognition app.

  • Bird sound recognition using the BirdNET model
  • Location-aware recognition
  • Observation history
  • Bird information
  • Optional spectrogram support
  • WAV recording
  • Bluetooth audio support
  • Canopy branding

Installation

  1. Download Canopy-5.4-debug.apk.
  2. Open the APK on an Android device.
  3. Allow installation from this source if Android asks.
  4. Install the application.
  5. Grant microphone and location permissions.
  6. Allow the BirdNET model to download on first launch.

Requirements

  • Android 8.0 or newer
  • Internet access for the first model download
  • Microphone permission
  • Location permission for location-aware recognition

Important

This is a debug testing build, not a final production release.

The BirdNET model is licensed separately. Review its license and usage restrictions before redistribution or commercial use.
