Version 2.0.0
Thumbico 2.0.0 is a complete rewrite, the first new version since 1.5 in 2015. It still does one thing: it shows the thumbnail or icon that Windows itself makes for any file, folder, or drive, at the size you choose, pixel for pixel. Everything around that is new: the look, the icon, and the engine. And for the first time, Thumbico is open source.
- Now open source - earlier versions were free but closed; 2.0 is under the MIT License, with all its source code here on GitHub
- A new look - one clean window with a toolbar, the image, and a status bar, in light or dark, following your Windows setting
- Drop anything on the window - a file, a folder, or a drive, from Explorer or any other program, and it is read at once
- Any size up to 8192 pixels - type a size, square or not, pick one of the shell's own sizes, or step with Ctrl+plus and Ctrl+minus
- Options you can see working - best image, thumbnail only, or icon only, plus the shell's rendering options; every change shows at once
- Real pixels on any display - one image pixel per screen pixel, even on a scaled display, or the display's scale, as Explorer draws it
- Save as ICO - next to PNG, JPEG, BMP, and GIF, with transparency kept in PNG and ICO
- Showcase mode - just the image, on the transparency grid or a plain canvas, ready for a screenshot (F11); the old Naked mode
- The keys Windows apps share - Ctrl+O, Ctrl+S, F5, F1, Ctrl+L, and more, shown in the menus and tooltips
- Remembers where you left it - the window, the size, and your options come back the next time
- Installer or portable - install for you alone, with no administrator rights, or for all users; or extract the portable zip anywhere
- A new moai - the same green Easter Island head since 2011, redrawn flat and simple
Requirements: Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit.
Thumbico is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn about it the first few times it is downloaded. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
Thumbico 2.0 is written in Dart with Flutter; the README says how it is built. It is free, with no account, no ads, and no telemetry.
