Rift 1.5.1
Rift 1.5.1: Rift on Google Play, clearer call audio, better noise suppression, and push-to-talk fixes on Windows.
If you have 1.5.0 or a 1.5.1 beta, Rift updates itself on Windows and Linux.
Downloads
- Windows (64-bit):
Rift-1.5.1-windows-x64-setup.exe. It isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. - Linux (x86-64):
rift-1.5.1-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it; it adds itself to your app menu and updates itself. Orrift-1.5.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, to unpack and runriftchat(this one does not update itself). Both need Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or newer. - Android (7 or newer): on Google Play, which keeps it up to date. No Google Play?
rift-1.5.1-android.apkworks on every phone; install it over the APK you have. If you know your phone's architecture, there is an APK for each (arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a,x86_64). The APK and Google Play's app are signed differently, so one can't update the other: uninstall first to switch.
New
- Muting and deafening play a sound
- Every volume slider has a small button beside its percentage that puts it back to 100%: a person's volume, a stream's sound, the soundboard, call and mic volume, and Rift's own sounds
- DPDFNet is now the noise suppression for new installs, and replaces RNNoise once for existing ones, since RNNoise made voices sound robotic. Pick RNNoise again and it stays. DeepFilterNet is gone
- On a phone, the call shows in the dock as it does on a desktop, and the voice connection card opens as a sheet
Fixes
- Someone who has just joined a server can read its channels and join its calls straight away. Before, they could only after restarting Rift
- Call audio no longer turns to static after watching someone's stream
- When someone shares their screen from a phone, everyone already in the call now sees the stream's tile
- People no longer disappear from a voice channel in the sidebar after a reconnect
- A call's timer keeps the right time when the device's clock changes
- Push-to-talk on Windows stays held when you click away from Rift, and works with mouse buttons and AutoHotkey keys
- On Windows, the mute, deafen and push-to-talk sounds play in both ears again; with an output device picked in Settings they played only in the left
- Rift signs in again by itself when a server's live updates stop accepting its sign-in, instead of going quiet until it expires
- Rift tries a server again while it is restarting, and a call that cannot connect says why
- Rift no longer writes call keys to its console output on Windows and Linux
- Android notifications show Rift's mark instead of an empty circle
- Reloading the web app no longer opens Join server with an error
- When the members list opens over the chat, the whole window dims behind it, and its shadow fades out instead of ending in a hard line
- A pale profile picture on a light background keeps its rounded corners on every side
- In the light theme, the title bar stays readable while a dialog dims the window
- Unread counts sit in the middle of their badge

rift-1.5.0-android.apk, which works on every phone. Open it once it has downloaded, and allow installs from your browser when Android asks. It does not update itself: install the next version's APK over it. If you know your phone's architecture, there is an APK for each (arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a,x86_64). Google Play is coming soon.
Android
- Rift's first Android release: chat, voice calls, watching streams and notifications, with the same end-to-end encryption as on the desktop
Calls
- A new noise filter, DPDFNet, in Settings → Voice & audio. It keeps your voice sounding more natural than RNNoise or DeepFilterNet. Pick DPDFNet-8 (the default) or the lighter DPDFNet-2; on a computer that can't keep up, it switches to the lighter one for that call
- Hide my voice from them: stop one person hearing you in every call, from their menu or profile. Everyone else still hears you
- Click anyone in a voice channel or the members list for their card: roles, mute state, a message box, their volume for you, a call button and, for moderators, mute, deafen, move and disconnect. When they share a screen, one button joins their call and opens their stream
- A call stays with its own server while you look at another one: you keep hearing everyone, people keep their pictures, the soundboard and bots keep working, and right-click actions go to the call's server
- Push-to-talk no longer cuts off the start or end of what you say, and on Windows its sound no longer repeats when other software watches the key
- Volume and mute for other people work after you rejoin a call
- Restart to update brings you back into the voice channel you were in
Screen sharing
- Shared sound is in stereo
- On Linux, share the sound of every app except Rift, or the sound of the window you share, remembered for next time (GNOME and KDE Plasma on Wayland, and X11). On Windows, sharing your whole screen no longer sends Rift's own sound back to the call
- Smoother H264 on every graphics card: 120 fps shares reach 120 fps on NVIDIA and Intel on Windows, viewers no longer freeze when someone starts watching, and colours no longer shift
- On Windows, sharing the window of a fullscreen game no longer ends when the game swaps its window
- A stream can fill the window without going full screen
Chat and servers
- Ctrl+V attaches a copied picture or files, and every text box has a right-click menu
- Leave server takes you off the server's member list, on servers that have updated
- Switching quickly between servers always shows the right server's channels, DMs and members
- With no server yet, the sidebar offers a button to add one
- Admins can kick bots, and a command shared by two bots goes to the one whose suggestion you picked
Rift account and updates
- Delete your Rift account in Settings → Account & backup
- Check now only looks for an update; a download shows its progress with Pause, Resume and Cancel
- Rift starts after a power cut that hit while it was saving, instead of opening to a white window
Windows
- The program is now
RiftChat.exe, so Discord and Windows no longer take it for the game RIFT. Shortcuts and invite links move to it by themselves - If RivaTuner (MSI Afterburner) made Rift close while starting, Rift says so next time and how to leave Rift out of it
Under the hood
- Flutter 3.47.7, Rust 1.99, LiveKit's Rust SDK 0.9.5 and Flutter SDK 2.13.1, Supabase Realtime client 2.13.2
Rift 1.5.0-beta.15
Rift 1.5.0 beta 15: everything about a server stays with that server, however fast you switch.
This is a beta. If you have 1.4.0, a 1.5.0 beta or a 1.4.0 beta and get beta updates, Rift updates itself.
Downloads
- Windows (64-bit):
Rift-1.5.0-beta.15-windows-x64-setup.exe. It isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. - Linux (x86-64):
rift-1.5.0-beta.15-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it; it adds itself to your app menu and updates itself. Orrift-1.5.0-beta.15-linux-x64.tar.gz, to unpack and runriftchat(this one does not update itself). Both need Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or newer.
Switching servers
- Each server's members, presence, soundboard and reports now belong to that server, so a page or dialog about one server always acts on it, whichever server you open next
- Switching quickly between servers no longer leaves the wrong server's DMs on screen
- A DM notification opens the right conversation, even when it is on another server
- After joining or creating a server, the question about listing it in the directory is about the new server, and the sidebar header and your name at the bottom show the new server straight away
- On a server that banned or kicked you, Rift no longer keeps trying to reconnect every few seconds, and it still hears when you are let back in
- With no server added, the sidebar offers a button to add one instead of an empty channel list
Soundboard
- The soundboard card in a call closes with Escape or a click outside it, and dialogs opened while it is up appear above it
Windows
- The program is now
RiftChat.exe, so Discord and Windows no longer take it for the game RIFT (Discord showed you as playing RIFT). Your shortcuts, start-at-sign-in and invite links move to it on their own when this update installs - If Rift closed while starting last time and RivaTuner (MSI Afterburner) is running, Rift now says that RivaTuner is the likely cause and how to leave Rift out of it
Rift 1.5.0-beta.14
Rift 1.5.0 beta 14: everything in a call stays with the call while you look at another server.
This is a beta. If you have 1.4.0, a 1.5.0 beta or a 1.4.0 beta and get beta updates, Rift updates itself.
Downloads
- Windows (64-bit):
Rift-1.5.0-beta.14-windows-x64-setup.exe. It isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. - Linux (x86-64):
rift-1.5.0-beta.14-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it; it adds itself to your app menu and updates itself. Orrift-1.5.0-beta.14-linux-x64.tar.gz, to unpack and runrift(this one does not update itself). Both need Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or newer.
Calls while you look at another server
- People in your call keep their pictures and names, instead of turning into letters
- Everyone else on the call's server keeps seeing you in the call. Before, opening another server made you look like you had left
- The soundboard stays: you hear what others play, and you can play the call's sounds
- Bots in the call keep being heard
- Right-clicking someone in the call (profile, message, move, mute, kick, ban, roles) acts on the call's server
- The call keeps its own name in the header, and switching to a voice channel on another server names the call you are leaving
Rift 1.5.0-beta.13
Rift 1.5.0 beta 13: a call keeps working while you look at another server.
This is a beta. If you have 1.4.0, a 1.5.0 beta or a 1.4.0 beta and get beta updates, Rift updates itself.
Downloads
- Windows (64-bit):
Rift-1.5.0-beta.13-windows-x64-setup.exe. It isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. - Linux (x86-64):
rift-1.5.0-beta.13-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it; it adds itself to your app menu and updates itself. Orrift-1.5.0-beta.13-linux-x64.tar.gz, to unpack and runrift(this one does not update itself). Both need Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or newer.
Calls
- Opening another server during a call could leave you hearing nobody and seeing no streams until you restarted. The call now stays with its own server, whichever one you are looking at
- Reconnecting, and starting a screen or sound share, also go to the call's server when you are looking at another one
- A moderator moving you to another channel works while you are looking at a different server
Rift 1.5.0-beta.12
Rift 1.5.0 beta 12: volume and mute work after you rejoin a call, and you can delete your Rift account.
This is a beta. If you have 1.4.0, a 1.5.0 beta or a 1.4.0 beta and get beta updates, Rift updates itself.
Downloads
- Windows (64-bit):
Rift-1.5.0-beta.12-windows-x64-setup.exe. It isn't signed yet, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. - Linux (x86-64):
rift-1.5.0-beta.12-linux-x64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it; it adds itself to your app menu and updates itself. Orrift-1.5.0-beta.12-linux-x64.tar.gz, to unpack and runrift(this one does not update itself). Both need Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or newer.
Calls
- After you left a call and joined again, changing someone's volume or muting them did nothing. It works again
- Restart to update brings you back into the voice channel you were in. A direct call still asks first, since restarting ends it
- People you hide your voice from are marked on their row in the sidebar
Servers
- Leave server now takes you off the server's member list, on servers that have updated. Your other devices drop the server too. Joining again needs a new invite
- Opening a server shows its members as loading until it knows who is online, instead of showing everyone offline
- On a touchscreen, swiping through the channels and members scrolls instead of picking one up. Hold a server to move it
Rift account
- You can delete your Rift account in Settings → Account & backup. It deletes your profile, backup, Rift messages, contacts and listings straight away. Servers you joined keep what you posted there
Polls
- In a channel with encryption off, the poll dialog says the poll is not encrypted
