inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.1.1 (hotfix)
inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.1.1 (hotfix)
New in 1.1.1
A fix-only update for 1.1 - same features, settings and keys.
- Fixed: video cutscenes cut off on ultrawide screens (21:9, 32:9): the game made its videos as wide as the screen and cut the top and bottom. Videos now show whole, with black bars at the sides (above and below on 4:3 / 16:10) - never stretched, and the game no longer shows through beside them. 16:9 is unchanged. Thanks to the player who reported the intro.
- Fixed: the game's first version (01.00, EU and US) closed right after preparing shaders (#22, #35). The build's game patches need update 01.07; on other versions they now stay off and the log says so. Please install update 01.07.
- Fixed: 12 GB cards closed on the loading screen (#36, RTX 5070): the driver refused one 3.8 GB block for copying the city's 3D models to the graphics card; the build now copies it in 256 MB pieces when that happens.
- Fixed: some AMD cards closed while preparing shaders (#25, #31): a shader version the driver refuses is now drawn the normal way (the 1.1 tip
SHADPS4_NATIVE_COLOUR=0is no longer needed). - 6 GB cards (#30): the city's 3D-model memory should now stay in video memory when the driver has room (before: an 8-second freeze, then hitches; tested with a simulated 6 GB card - please report). Cards where it does not fit try smaller sizes first, and a window explains what helps before the game would close for lack of memory (#5).
- HDR is experimental (#13, #32, #37): it is still too dark and contrasty, and DLSS does not work while the game is in its HDR mode. Keep HDR off for now: F3 -> Graphics -> uncheck "Enable HDR" -> Save, then restart the game (that also brings DLSS back). Proper HDR with DLSS is the main work for 1.2.
- Linux / Steam Deck (Wine, Proton), experimental (#17, #29): the crash 1-7 minutes into play is fixed (found by HereFORASSIGNMENTS). Linux saves ("permission denied") are not fixed yet.
- Smaller fixes: a game folder without
sce_sysnow gets a clear message instead of a crash (#38); sensor mode (L3 + R3) gives right-stick aiming on pads with a motion sensor too (ROG Ally, Switch Pro); ashadps4-flags-user.txtsaved as "UTF-8 with BOM" keeps its first line; when DLSS cannot start, the notice says why (#19).
Updating: unzip over your 1.1 folder and replace the files - saves, settings, keys, DLSS files and your own shadps4-flags-user.txt stay. The first start prepares shaders once more (new cache folder user\cache\CUSA00004-v111); afterwards you can delete user\cache\CUSA00004-v110 (and older ones).
An experimental fork of the shadPS4 PS4 emulator (built on shadPS4 0.17), tuned for one game: inFAMOUS Second Son. Unofficial, not affiliated with Sony, Sucker Punch or the shadPS4 team. No game files included - you need your own dump (tested: EU CUSA00004, update 1.07).
All features at a glance: https://github.com/axylpup/shadPS4#features - questions (saves, language, stutter, speed): https://github.com/axylpup/shadPS4#faq
Quick start
- Download and unzip
inFAMOUS-SecondSon-shadPS4-v1.1.1-win64.zipanywhere (or over your 1.1 folder). - Run
shadPS4.exeand pick your game folder (the one witheboot.binandsce_sys). It remembers it. - The first start prepares shaders (one time, with a progress screen). Then play.
Keyboard + mouse: WASD move, mouse camera (Y toggles mouse aiming), Space jump, left / right click shoot / aim. All keys, the special sections (T = touchpad, X = motion sensor), every setting and troubleshooting are in the README inside the zip; shadps4-flags-user-EXAMPLES.txt lists the settings players usually want. A DualSense / DualShock 4 works as on the console; on Xbox and other controllers, D-pad up / View are the touchpad halves and L3 + R3 turns on sensor mode for the spray-can and touchpad moments (picture: https://github.com/axylpup/shadPS4#controllers).
DLSS (optional)
NVIDIA's files are not included (licence). Download Streamline SDK 2.14.16 from https://github.com/NVIDIA-RTX/Streamline/releases - exactly that version - and copy these five files from its bin\x64 folder (not development) into the dlss folder next to shadPS4.exe:
sl.interposer.dll, sl.common.dll, sl.dlss.dll, sl.pcl.dll, nvngx_dlss.dll
Start the game: DLSS turns on by itself. Home switches it on / off to compare, Page Up opens the DLSS panel. Without the files the game uses its own anti-aliasing. (Already set up for 1.1? Nothing to do.)
Requirements
- Windows 10 / 11 64-bit, a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card (12 GB video memory recommended; 8 GB runs, smaller cards can lower the render size), a fast 6+ core CPU.
- DLSS: an NVIDIA RTX card (20 series or newer) and a recent driver.
- Tested on one PC: Intel Core i5-13600K, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB (driver 617.14), 32 GB DDR5-4800, WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe, 2560x1440 240 Hz G-Sync screen (MSI MPG 271QRX), Windows 11. 1.1.1 ran within 1% of 1.1 in our fight benchmark. Other hardware should work - reports welcome.
Known issues
- HDR (F3 -> Graphics -> Enable HDR) is experimental: too dark and contrasty, no DLSS while it is on - keep it off until 1.2.
- Touchpad prompts and the controller picture in the Options screen still show the PlayStation controller.
- A few particle effects (smoke, fire) can flicker in places.
- With DLSS on, menus look a little less smooth around the edges; the F12 screenshot shows the HUD on black (use Alt+F12).
- Sounds a PS4 plays on the controller speaker come out of your PC speakers (turned down to 25%; adjustable with
SHADPS4_PADSPK_VOLUMEinshadps4-flags-user.txt). - Some heavy views (for example the first karma choice) sometimes run at about half their usual frame rate; reloading usually brings it back.
Found a problem? Open an issue with user\log\shad_log.txt (and user\log\fatal.txt after a crash), your graphics card + driver, CPU and what you were doing.

EXPERIMENTAL test build for Linux / Proton (Wine fs patch) - not a release
Experimental test build for Linux / Proton / Wine testers (#29, #17) - not a release. Windows players: please stay on v1.1. Proper support for other systems (Linux, Steam Deck / Steam Frame) will be focused on later; this build only tests one fix.
The fix: under Wine / Proton the game's fs:[0] reads never fault, so the Windows build never patched them and they read host memory - the crash 1-7 minutes into gameplay (root cause found by HereFORASSIGNMENTS in #29). This build detects Wine (ntdll's wine_get_version) and patches that code ahead of time, after the build's own Windows patcher.
How to check it worked: near the start of user\log\shad_log.txt there is a line Ahead-of-time guest code patching: on (Wine <version>), followed by Ahead-of-time patching: N instructions patched. If it still crashes, please post shad_log.txt (and fatal.txt if there is one) in #29.
Also inside (the next version's work in progress, tested on Windows only): AMD drivers refusing a shader variant no longer close the game (#25, #31), 6 GB cards keep the big mesh buffer in video memory when the driver has room (#30), the US 01.00 game no longer crashes at boot (#22 - install update 01.07 for the patches), the game's HDR10 picture is shown correctly on SDR screens (#13), the 1.1.1 out-of-memory step-down (#5). Not fixed yet: Linux saves ("permission denied", #29).
Same settings, keys and folders as v1.1: unzip into a new folder, or over a copy of your v1.1 folder. DLSS files as in v1.1 (your own download).

inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.1
inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.1
New in 1.1
- Any screen shape: the game now fills ultrawide (21:9, 32:9), 16:10, 4:3 and even square screens. Wider screens see more at the sides, narrower ones more above and below - nothing is stretched. The HUD stays in a 16:9 area in the middle (
SHADPS4_HUDchanges it). The shape is read at start; video cutscenes keep black bars. - Render size as a percentage of your screen, changed live: Page Up opens a panel with a slider and a number box (10-200%) and the DLSS presets 33 / 50 / 58 / 67 / 100%. Below 100% the game renders smaller and DLSS (RTX) or the normal scaler (every other card) brings it up to your screen - faster on weaker cards; above 100% it is sharper. No restart (sizes above about 3200x1800, e.g. 4K, after one restart), works on every graphics card, the HUD keeps its size. Insert switches between your pick and 100%.
- Native 4K: the game renders 3840x2160 (100% on a 4K screen, 150% on 1440p). Before, anything above 3200x1800 crashed - the game's list of lights per screen tile was made for the PS4 Pro's picture size; it is now sized for yours. City at 4K: about 85 FPS on the test PC.
- Sharper DLSS, no wobble: DLSS gets 8-64 sub-pixel positions instead of the game's 2, for smoother edges (especially at 100% / DLAA). The game's motion data for moving characters is corrected for it, so Delsin no longer wobbles (his planted feet moved 0.25 px per frame, now 0.01).
SHADPS4_DLSS_HALTON=0= the old 2 positions. - Street reflections at low render sizes (33-50%): the stripes are mostly gone (NVIDIA cards for now; other cards keep the game's reflections): the reflection effect now starts each pixel at a slightly different point, changing every frame, so the game's own frame blending smooths it out.
- Even motion on screens without G-Sync / FreeSync: F3 -> Quick -> V-Sync -> Fifo (half refresh) shows every picture for exactly two refreshes (72 FPS on 144 Hz, 120 on 240 Hz) - no uneven frame times. V-Sync and the frame-rate cap now apply right away.
- F3 opens with one press on a new Quick tab (display mode, V-Sync, frame-rate cap, volume, deadzones, language); the menu fits any window and every slider has a number box. The window title shows the version.
- Fullscreen and mouse speed are remembered (F11 / F3 Display Mode,
-/=). - Update check on the loading screen: every start shows "Latest version: 1.1 - Current", or in green "Latest version: 1.2 - New update out!" when there is one. One small request to GitHub per start, nothing is downloaded;
SHADPS4_UPDATE_CHECK=0turns it off. - Less memory on smaller PCs: cards under 10 GB use about 0.45 GB less video memory (+22% FPS on a simulated 4 GB card), PCs under 24 GB of RAM about 2.5 GB less RAM - by themselves.
- CPUs with fewer than 20 threads (most 6- and 8-core CPUs) get a better thread setup by themselves: about 8-12% more FPS in a fight (the 1.0.2 tip
SHADPS4_CP_QOS=0is no longer needed). - Controllers without a touchpad or motion sensor (Xbox, GameSir, ...): L3 + R3 switches to sensor mode for the spray-can and touchpad moments; D-pad up / View are the touchpad halves. Idea from NihadHassan999 (GitHub #9 / #10) - thank you!
- Every emulator key can be changed (DLSS on / off, panels, mouse speed) - handy on laptops where Home or Page Up needs Fn.
- Performance mode (experimental):
SHADPS4_PERF_MODE=loworofficeuses the game's own lower settings: +13% / +19% FPS in our heaviest city view. - Fixed: 8 GB AMD cards (e.g. RX 6600) closed ~40 s into loading the world (out of video memory, GitHub #15 - thanks Jhojan98 for the detailed report): their driver's 2 GB block limit switched off 1.0.2's 8 GB fix; now they get it too.
- Fixed: AMD Radeon RX 5000 cards crashed while preparing shaders (GitHub #5 - please report if yours still does); yellow / black picture with a "render resolution" game patch and DLSS.
Updating: unzip over your old folder and replace the files - saves, settings, keys, DLSS files and your own shadps4-flags-user.txt stay. The first start prepares shaders once more (new cache folder user\cache\CUSA00004-v110); afterwards you can delete user\cache\CUSA00004-v102 (and older ones).

Highlights
- High frame rates: on the test PC (i5-13600K + RTX 4070 Ti SUPER) the open-world city benchmark runs at about 140 FPS (1% lows about 134) and the heaviest rooftop view at about 110 FPS (measured with 1.0; 1.1 ran within 2% of 1.0.2 in our fight benchmark; your screen shows at most its refresh rate). One PC only - as a very rough guide, the same PC limited to fewer CPU cores gave about 95 FPS (6 cores), 60 FPS (4 cores / 8 threads) and 44 FPS (4 small efficiency cores) in 1.0. Treat these as estimates.
- DLSS 4.5 (NVIDIA RTX): upscaling or DLAA with a sharp HUD. Bring your own NVIDIA files - 2 minutes, see below.
- Real 1:1 mouse aiming and a full keyboard + mouse layout, including the spray-can (motion sensor) and touchpad parts, with keyboard / mouse icons in the game's prompts.
- Fixes: settings stay after a restart, the Load menu's "No" works, TVs in the city play, unplugging a controller hands control to the keyboard, controller-speaker sounds turned down to 25%.
- Shader cache included with a progress screen on the first start - far less first-time stutter.

inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.0.2
This is an old version - v1.1 is out (ultrawide and any screen shape, render size changed live, native 4K, sharper DLSS, smoother V-Sync and more). Get the newest build here: https://github.com/axylpup/shadPS4/releases/latest (to update, unzip it over your old folder and replace the files - your saves and settings stay).
New in 1.0.2 (hotfix)
- Fixed: a crash when loading a save on 8 GB graphics cards (or less). The game's 3D-model memory (about 2.5 GB) is now set up once when the game loads, instead of being rebuilt - and briefly held twice - while you play. If video memory still runs short, the game slows down instead of closing. Tested on the test PC with 8 GB of its video memory blocked off: no crash, and the rooftop view ran at the same speed as with the full card (126 FPS); real 8 GB cards are still untested, reports welcome.
- Fixed: the first start could look frozen at 15% ("crash at the shader screen"): the build re-read your whole copy of the game (about 30 GB) when it differed even slightly from the tested one, without updating the screen. It now reads only the files that differ (usually a few, under a second) and shows the progress if it has to read more.
- New: controller stick deadzone - the sticks reacted to the smallest touch. Default 7.5%; change it in F3 -> Input -> Left / Right Stick Deadzone (%) (applies right after Save).
- Easier settings: the README has a new "Changing settings" section, and the zip has
shadps4-flags-user-EXAMPLES.txtwith every setting players usually want (deadzone, mouse speed, controller-speaker volume, graphics card, DLSS, compatibility mode) and what it does. - Tip for 6-core CPUs (Ryzen 5 5600 / 7600, Core i5-12400 and similar): put
SHADPS4_CP_QOS=0intoshadps4-flags-user.txt- on the test PC limited to 6 cores / 12 threads it gave about 12% more FPS (115 instead of 103 in a fight scene). The next update is planned to do this by itself. - Better crash reports:
user\log\fatal.txtnow names the error and where it happened.
Updating: unzip over your 1.0 / 1.0.1 folder and replace the files - saves, settings, keys, DLSS files and your own shadps4-flags-user.txt stay. The first start prepares shaders once more (new cache folder user\cache\CUSA00004-v102); afterwards you can delete user\cache\CUSA00004-v101 (and CUSA00004 from 1.0).

- DLSS 4.5 (NVIDIA RTX): upscales the game's 1080p to your 1440p / 4K screen (DLAA on 1080p screens), the HUD stays sharp. Bring your own NVIDIA files - 2 minutes, see below.
- Real 1:1 mouse aiming - the mouse moves the camera directly; left click shoots, right click aims.
- Full keyboard + mouse layout, including the spray-can (motion sensor) and touchpad parts.
- Keyboard / mouse button icons in the game's prompts - they switch to PlayStation buttons when you pick up a controller.
- Fixes: settings stay after a restart, the Load menu's "No" works, TVs in the city play, unplugging a controller hands control to the keyboard, both touchpad halves on the keyboard (R + G), spray-can scenes on the keyboard (X = motion mode, hold Z = tilt, tap Z = rattle), controller-speaker sounds (ringtone, rattle) turned down to 25%.
- Shader cache included with a progress screen on the first start - far less first-time stutter.
- Sharper water reflections.

inFAMOUS Second Son on shadPS4 - performance build v1.0.1
This is an old version - v1.1 is out (ultrawide and any screen shape, render size changed live, native 4K, sharper DLSS, smoother V-Sync and more). Get the newest build here: https://github.com/axylpup/shadPS4/releases/latest (to update, unzip it over your old folder and replace the files - your saves and settings stay).
New in 1.0.1 (hotfix)
- Fixed the cause of the crash at the shader screen on AMD cards (and other cards unlike the test PC's) from the second start on: reproduced and removed on the test PC. Reports from AMD players are welcome.
- Fixed: a crash at start-up when the folder's path has letters your Windows language does not use (for example Cyrillic letters on an English Windows).
- Fixed: the game could start on the integrated GPU of PCs with two (laptops, or Intel graphics enabled next to a graphics card) - 1.0 shipped a setting that forced "the first GPU". 1.0.1 picks the dedicated card by itself.
- US version (CUSA00223) now gets the same tuned settings as the EU version (frame-rate limit, memory, fullscreen). It is still untested - reports welcome.
- Frame rate stops at your monitor's refresh rate? Your driver has no "Mailbox" mode (AMD on Windows, some Intel / laptop drivers), so the game uses V-Sync (no tearing). For uncapped: F3 -> Present Mode -> Immediate, save, restart (can tear without FreeSync / G-Sync).
- The game is recognised by its own code, not by its info file: a game folder whose
sce_sys\param.sfowas replaced (for example by a DLC's - the log then says "Unknown version") keeps the shader preparation and the speed-ups. DLC belongs inuser\addcont\CUSA00004\<any name>\(README, Setup step 7). - Clearer save-folder instructions in the README.
- Updating is now just unzipping over your old folder (replace the files): saves, settings, keys, DLSS files and your game-folder choice stay. The first start prepares shaders once more (each version has its own cache folder); then you can delete the old
user\cache\CUSA00004. Your own flag changes now go inshadps4-flags-user.txt, which updates never touch (if you editedshadps4-flags.txtin 1.0, move those lines there). - The first-start "Save Migration" box no longer appears on fresh installs.

- High frame rates: on the test PC (i5-13600K + RTX 4070 Ti SUPER) the open-world city benchmark runs at about 140 FPS (1% lows about 134) and the heaviest rooftop view at about 110 FPS (your screen shows at most its refresh rate). One PC only - as a very rough guide, the same PC limited to fewer CPU cores gave about 95 FPS (6 cores), 60 FPS (4 cores / 8 threads) and 44 FPS (4 small efficiency cores). Treat these as estimates.
Quick start
- Download and unzip
inFAMOUS-SecondSon-shadPS4-v1.0.1-win64.zipanywhere. - Run
shadPS4.exeand pick your game folder (the one witheboot.bin). It remembers it. - The first start prepares shaders (one time, with a progress screen). Then play.
Keyboard + mouse: WASD move, mouse camera (Y toggles mouse aiming), Space jump, left / right click shoot / aim. All keys, the special sections (T = touchpad, X = motion sensor) and troubleshooting are in the README inside the zip. A DualSense / DualShock 4 works as on the console.
Home switches it on / off to compare. Without the files the game uses its own anti-aliasing.
Requirements
- Windows 10 / 11 64-bit, a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card (12 GB video memory recommended), a fast 6+ core CPU.
- DLSS: an NVIDIA RTX card (20 series or newer) and a recent driver.
- Tested only on Windows 11 + RTX 4070 Ti SUPER + i5-13600K. Other hardware should work (every new feature has a fallback) but is untested - reports welcome.
Known issues
- Touchpad prompts and the controller picture in the Options screen still show the PlayStation controller.
- A few particle effects (smoke, fire) can flicker in places.
- With DLSS on, menus look a little less smooth around the edges; the F12 screenshot shows the HUD on black (use Alt+F12).
- Sounds a PS4 plays on the controller speaker come out of your PC speakers (turned down to 25%; adjustable in
shadps4-flags.txt,SHADPS4_PADSPK_VOLUME).
