We are very proud to announce the release of Overleaf Pro 6.3.1, the most powerful and feature-rich online LaTeX editor in the community. While a typical patch release would focus on minor fixes and improvements to v6.3.0, this release goes much further. Alongside numerous bug fixes and improvements, we're introducing five new features. Let's see the changes.

Changes

  • Two-way Dropbox Sync (Early Preview)
  • Two-way GitLab Sync (Early Preview)
  • Per-project MCP Server
  • GitHub Enterprise support for GitHub Sync
  • Handwritten Symbol Recognition in the symbol palette (model trained by @ayaka-notes)
  • Bug fix found by our E2E Testing System and Internal Horizon Issue Investigation

Both Dropbox and GitLab two-way synchronization are available as early previews, ahead of their planned official release in v6.4.0.

Feature 01: Dropbox Sync (Preview)

Preview: Dropbox Sync ships in v6.3.1 as an early preview for gray testing, and will be officially released in v6.4.0. Its configuration and behavior may still change before then. Please report any issues on GitHub.

Each user links their own Dropbox account, and their owned and shared projects appear under Apps/<DROPBOX_APP_NAME>/. Edits in Overleaf are pushed to Dropbox, and edits in Dropbox come back through a signed webhook. Git bridge must be enabled. Set DROPBOX_ENABLED, DROPBOX_APP_KEY, DROPBOX_APP_SECRET, DROPBOX_APP_NAME and DROPBOX_TOKEN_CIPHER_PASSWORD; DROPBOX_SYNC_PROXY_URL is optional. Then create the MongoDB indexes Dropbox Sync needs, once, before users link their accounts (how).

Feature 02: GitLab Sync (Preview)

Preview: GitLab Sync ships in v6.3.1 as an early preview for gray testing, and will be officially released in v6.4.0. Its configuration and behavior may still change before then. Please report any issues on GitHub.

Two-way sync with GitLab, the same way GitHub Sync works: link your account, import a repository from the new project menu, export a project, push and pull, and merge through merge requests. Self-managed GitLab 15.10+ is supported via GITLAB_SYNC_URL. Set GITLAB_SYNC_ENABLED, GITLAB_SYNC_CLIENT_ID, GITLAB_SYNC_CLIENT_SECRET and GITLAB_TOKEN_CIPHER_PASSWORD.

Feature 03: MCP Server

Every project gets an MCP endpoint at /project/<project_id>/mcp, enabled together with git bridge. Authenticate with the same Git token you use for git clone. AI agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Gemini CLI can read and edit files live, compile, fetch the log and PDF, count words, list versions and answer review comments. Access follows the project's roles, and every tool is rate limited.

Feature 04: GitHub Enterprise

Point GitHub Sync at your GitHub Enterprise Server with GITHUB_SYNC_URL, GITHUB_SYNC_API_URL and GITHUB_SYNC_GRAPHQL_URL. The defaults stay on github.com.

Feature 05: Handwritten Symbol Recognition

Switch the symbol palette to draw mode and sketch a symbol to get matching LaTeX commands. Recognition runs in the browser with a model trained by ayaka-notes, so no data leaves the user's machine. The draw toggle is hidden on browsers without OffscreenCanvas (e.g. Safari 15).

Upgrade

  • From v6.3.0: no migration is needed. Pull the new image and restart.
  • From v6.2.x or earlier with Zotero or Mendeley in use: run the Zotero / Mendeley migration script from the v6.3.0 release notes first.
  • Dropbox Sync and GitLab Sync are off by default. GitLab Sync only needs new environment variables. Dropbox Sync also needs its MongoDB indexes created once, before users link their accounts: see Create the database indexes.
