Plugin Notion MCP — Changes since v1.0.0

Overview

Since v1.0.0, the project went through a significant restructuring focused on improving the CLI, installation flow, diagnostics, credential handling, Linux compatibility, packaging, CI/CD, and project governance.

The web interface that appeared during this development period was subsequently removed from this repository and moved to a separate repository. Therefore, the web application should not be considered part of the current Plugin Notion MCP release.

Major Changes

CLI Improvements

The CLI was standardized around the plugin-mcp executable.

The main commands used by the project are now:

plugin-mcp --help
plugin-mcp doctor
plugin-mcp verify

This also required updates to the CI smoke tests and related project configuration.

Credential Storage

Credential handling was improved, particularly around keytar.

The project moved toward dynamic loading of the native credential-storage dependency, making environments where the native module is unavailable easier to handle.

Linux CI support was also improved with the required libsecret dependency.

Linux Support

The CI environment now explicitly installs the dependencies required for secure credential storage on Linux.

This makes Linux a better-supported target and reduces failures caused by missing native system libraries.

Node.js & CI

The CI environment was updated to a newer Node.js version and the smoke-test workflow was updated to use the current CLI name.

The release/CI infrastructure was also cleaned up to better reflect the current package structure.

npm & Packaging

The project received improvements to its npm package and release infrastructure, including:

  • Package metadata updates

  • npm registry configuration

  • Release workflow adjustments

  • Versioning updates

  • Distribution improvements

The project is now better prepared for installation and distribution through npm.

Documentation

The README and project documentation were updated to reflect the current CLI-oriented architecture and installation flow.

Documentation was also cleaned up as the project moved away from having the web interface inside this repository.

Web Application Moved to a Separate Repository

A web application was developed during the period after v1.0.0, but it is no longer part of this repository.

The web implementation was subsequently removed from Plugin Notion MCP and directed to a separate repository.

Therefore:

  • The current repository remains focused on the Plugin Notion MCP CLI/tooling.

  • Web UI code should not be considered part of the current release.

  • Web-related commits in the history represent an intermediate architectural phase.

  • Future web development should be tracked in the dedicated web repository.

This separation keeps the core Plugin Notion MCP project smaller and more focused.

Open Source Project Structure

The repository gained standard open-source project documentation:

  • CONTRIBUTING.md

  • CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md

  • SECURITY.md

These provide contribution guidelines, community standards, and a dedicated security-reporting process.

License

The project license was changed from ISC to MIT.

The repository now contains the MIT license text.

Repository Cleanup

The repository went through a substantial cleanup and restructuring following the experimental web integration.

Parts of the temporary web implementation were removed from the core project after the decision to maintain the web application separately.

This results in a clearer separation between:

Plugin Notion MCP
├── CLI
├── Installation
├── Verification
├── Diagnostics
├── Credential management
└── Release / packaging

and the separately maintained web application.

Current State vs. v1.0.0

Area | v1.0.0 | Current -- | -- | -- CLI | ✅ | ✅ Improved doctor | ✅ | ✅ Improved verify | ✅ | ✅ Improved Credential storage | ✅ | ✅ Improved Linux support | Basic | Improved Node.js / CI | Older | Updated npm packaging | Basic | Improved Documentation | Initial | Expanded Security policy | ❌ | ✅ Contributing guide | ❌ | ✅ Code of Conduct | ❌ | ✅ License | ISC | MIT Web UI | ❌ | Moved to separate repository

Summary

The main evolution since v1.0.0 has been the maturation of the core Plugin Notion MCP tooling rather than the addition of a permanent web interface.

The project now has improved CLI commands, credential handling, Linux compatibility, CI/CD, npm packaging, documentation, and open-source governance.

The web application was explored as part of the project's evolution, but was later separated from the core repository and moved to its own project. As a result, it should be treated as a separate product/component rather than a feature of the current Plugin Notion MCP release.
