Pixmith 0.5.4
Fixes and improvements
- GIF export writes only the part of each frame that changed, with one palette for the whole animation and identical frames merged. A 1280×768 animation with a small moving sprite went from 2.55 MB to 130 KB. Very large GIFs now come with a warning.
- Trace Pixel Art finds the pixel grid on soft, AI-style sheets (grids that drift and change per character). A weak grid gives a result with a warning instead of an error, and "no edges" and "grid too weak" are reported separately.
- Lint Sprite now lists as light edge exactly what Clean Edges would remove (light details inside the outline are no longer flagged), and stray pixels are only counted in flat areas, so textured art no longer floods the report.
- Terrain brush no longer erases hand-placed tiles next to the painted cells (square and isometric tilemaps).
- Frame Difference compares the first frame of a tag with the last frame of the same tag, so tag starts no longer show fake spikes.
- Tween: a layer's tween can hold the last pose, loop, or rest after its last key (hold for new tweens), so looping cycles don't pop.
- Linked tilemap cels stay linked when the file is saved.
- Memory-limit errors now say how many cels, the canvas size and the memory they need;
Image{fromFile}errors state its size limits.

New
Isometric tilemaps
- Tilemap → New Tilemap Layer… → Isometric: diamond grids (e.g. 96×48 or 32×16, Diamond Down), tiles taller than the diamond with a per-tile pivot, and a per-layer pixel offset for elevation levels (Raise / Lower ½ cell in the inspector).
- Tile Stamp and the terrain brush work on diamond cells; View → Isometric Grid and Select → Isometric Tile follow the active iso layer.
- Export Tileset to Godot writes an isometric TileSet (tile_shape Isometric, layout Diamond Down, texture_origin per tile, terrain peering) and TileMapLayers with their offsets.
Clean Edges and Sprite Lint (FX menu)
- Remove paper halos from the outer rings, despeckle loose bits, thin a thick outer outline to 1 px, with guards that keep eyes, fingers and highlights intact.
- Lint Sprite lists light edge pixels, holes, specks, pixels without outline, stray and semi-transparent pixels, per cel.
Remove Background and Trace Pixel Art
- FX → Remove Background…: removes a paper background and its drop shadow, with live preview.
- File → Import → Trace Pixel Art…: turns an upscaled, soft "pseudo pixel art" image into a real pixel grid (grid size and offset detected automatically, palette reduced).
Frame Difference (Sprite menu / timeline): tints the pixels that changed, appeared or disappeared since the previous frame, with a count in the status bar.
Warp (Edit → Warp…): bend a cel or selection with grid handles; pixels are resampled by majority vote, so there is no blur and no new colour.
Tween rig: a layer can follow a parent layer (thigh → shin → boot); pivots follow the parent and Bake composes the chain.
Lua: app.command.CleanEdges, app.lint, app.command.RemoveBackground, app.command.TraceGrid, app.frameDiff, app.command.Warp, layer.tweenParent and tween keys, iso tilemap helpers.
Fixes
- Slice pivots:
getPivotreturns nil before the first pivot key, setPivotwithout a frame applies to every key, and pivots survive frame edits and save/reload. - Clear Lua errors for fractional numbers (e.g.
frame.durationis whole milliseconds). - Live documents open in one step, so a failed open never leaves a half-built tab; saving over a file held by another clean tab can replace it.
- Save As for an imported image starts in the image's folder.

Pixmith 0.5.2
New
- Aseprite-compatible Lua scripting. Scripts written for Aseprite now run in Pixmith with little or no change:
Point,Size,Rectangle,Image(includingImage{ fromFile }andimage.bytes),Colorandapp.pixelColor,Sprite,app.openandsaveAs,app.command,Palette, and the usual enums (BlendMode,ColorMode, ...). See "Aseprite compatibility" in docs/LUA_API.md. - Scripts ask before they touch files. When a script reads or writes a file (or runs a command), Pixmith shows a dialog: Allow Once, Always Allow for This Script, or Deny. You can clear the "always" answers in Preferences > Forget Allowed Scripts.
- Isometric grid and Select > Isometric Tile, in both the macOS app and the cross-platform app.
- Help menu with Pixmith Help, Keyboard Shortcuts and Command Line Tool.
- Cels keep content beyond the canvas, like Aseprite, and saved files keep it too.
- Documents a script creates open as tabs.
- The MCP server (pixmith-mcp) has a new
allow_pathsoption forrun_lua, so a script run by an AI assistant can use the folders you name without a dialog.
Fixes
- Opening a file from Finder no longer quits Pixmith.
- Creating several documents at once through Live (
documents.new) no longer loses documents. - Windows: the Lua file tests and
Image{ fromFile }on a folder now behave the same as on macOS and Linux.
Notes
- Old Pixmith scripts: a few things changed to match Aseprite (details under "Aseprite compatibility" in docs/LUA_API.md):
app.activeLayerandapp.activeFrameare handles now, not numbers (sprite.activeLayerandsprite.activeFrameare still numbers).- Blend mode numbers follow Aseprite's (the names such as
BlendMode.MULTIPLYare unchanged). sprite.colorModeis aColorModenumber, not a string.app.fgColor,app.bgColorand tag colors areColorobjects; compare withColor(255, 0, 0)instead of an integer.
- Pixmith is not code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS may warn when you open it.
- Windows: choose More info, then Run anyway.
- macOS: open System Settings > Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.

Pixmith 0.5.1 — Godot Live Link
Pixmith 0.5.1 connects Pixmith to your running Godot game.
New
- Godot Live Link. Draw in Pixmith and the sprite in your running Godot game changes right away: no save, no export, no restart. Export the sprite to Godot once (Export to Godot…) so Pixmith knows which resource it is, add the addon to your game, and run it from Godot. Every stroke shows up in the game a moment after you release the mouse, undo included. Animations keep playing; frames and animations you add or remove follow too.
- Get the addon from
pixmith-live-link-godot-0.5.1.zipbelow (orgodot/addons/pixmith_live_linkin the repository). Copy thepixmith_live_linkfolder into your project'saddons/and enable it in Project Settings > Plugins. - It only runs in debug builds, so it never ships with a released game. If Pixmith is closed, the game keeps running with the last sprites and reconnects on its own.
- Works with Godot 4 SpriteFrames (AnimatedSprite2D / AnimatedSprite3D). Tilesets are not live yet.
- Get the addon from
- Game view for AI agents. With the Pixmith MCP server, an agent can now see the running game (
game_screenshot), not only the canvas. It can edit a sprite in Pixmith and check how it looks in the game, at the game's scale and on the game's background. - The protocol behind both is documented in
docs/LIVE_PROTOCOL.md(godot.atlas,game.*).
Fixes
- Live mode on Windows: Disconnect no longer leaves the "AI connected" chip showing.

New
- More file formats. Open, import and export WebP, JPEG, BMP, TGA, ICO/CUR, PCX and FLI/FLC, in both apps and the CLI.
- Lua dialogs, events and plugins. Scripts can show
Dialogwindows (buttons, entries, sliders, color pickers, combo boxes, …), listen to app events (sitechange,beforecommand/aftercommand, …) and run as plugins withinit/exit. Seedocs/LUA_DIALOG.md. - Extensions and themes. Install a
.pixmith-extensionpackage (scripts, palettes, themes, plugins) by opening it or dropping it on the window. Color themes for the whole UI. A starter template is inscripts/extension-template/. - Color profiles. sRGB and embedded ICC profiles are kept when opening and saving
.asepriteand.pxmtfiles. - Cel z-index and reference layers (they never render into exports, and filters leave locked reference layers alone).
- Color selectors in the inspector: color wheel, RGB/HSV/HSL sliders, gray, and a normal-map picker.
- Blur and Jumble brush tools.
- System clipboard images on Windows and Linux: copy a selection out to other apps, paste an image in.
- Pixmith Live. The Pixmith MCP server can now drive the app that is open: AI edits show up in the window as they happen, and each one is a normal undo step. A chip in the title row shows when an agent is connected and offers Disconnect. You can turn it off in Preferences. The protocol is in
docs/LIVE_PROTOCOL.md.
Notes
- Pen pressure works on macOS and Windows. Linux has no pen pressure yet.
- Linux is best effort: the tarball is built and tested in CI, but there are no distro packages.
- On macOS,
beforecommand/aftercommandevents cover Undo, Redo, New/Delete Layer and New/Delete Frame for now.

Pixmith 0.4.2 — starts on older PCs
Fix: the Windows/Linux app now starts on older PCs
On some PCs the app installed fine but never opened. This happened on older laptops such as a 5th-gen Core i3 with Intel HD 5500 graphics, and nothing on screen said why. This release fixes that:
- OpenGL fallback:
- Before opening the window, Pixmith checks whether the graphics card supports DirectX 12 or Vulkan. If it doesn't, Pixmith uses OpenGL instead.
- If the faster renderer still fails while starting, Pixmith restarts itself with OpenGL.
- You can force a renderer with the environment variable
PIXMITH_RENDERER=glow(OpenGL) orPIXMITH_RENDERER=wgpu.
- No more silent failures:
- If Pixmith can't start, or crashes, an error message now appears.
- The details are written to a log:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\Pixmith\pixmith.log - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Pixmith/pixmith.log - Linux:
~/.local/share/pixmith/pixmith.log
- Windows:
Pixmith --diagnoseshows which renderer would be used.
- No Visual C++ Redistributable needed on Windows any more. The C runtime is now part of the program.
If Pixmith still doesn't open, please send us the pixmith.log file.

Pixmith 0.4.1 — Windows installer
Windows installer
New: Pixmith-Setup-0.4.1-x64.exe, the recommended way to install on Windows.
- Install scope: for your account (no admin needed) or for all users.
- Shortcuts: a Start Menu shortcut, plus an optional desktop shortcut.
- File types:
.pxmtfiles open in Pixmith with its icon. You can also choose to open.asepriteand.asefiles with Pixmith. pixmithcommand: added to your PATH, the same as on macOS. Open a new terminal and runpixmith --help.- Updates and uninstall: a newer installer upgrades in place. Uninstall from Settings → Apps; it also removes the PATH entry and the file associations.
The portable zip is still available. It and the Linux tarball now use the same layout, Pixmith(.exe) plus bin/pixmith(.exe).

Pixmith 0.4.0 — projects, Home screen and .pxmt
Projects and the Home screen
- Home screen at launch: recent projects and canvases, cover thumbnails, search and sort, New Project and Open Project.
- Projects are plain folders of canvases. The project view shows a thumbnail grid, and you can:
- create, import, rename, duplicate and drag-reorder canvases;
- delete a canvas to the project trash, with an Undo toast and a Recently deleted list to restore from.
- Canvas switcher in the editor: project name ▾ next to the tabs, plus Back to Home.
- Fast with large projects: thumbnails load in the background and are cached, so a project with hundreds of canvases stays smooth.
The .pxmt format
- Pixmith's own document format, and the new default for Save. It stores the whole sprite plus an embedded thumbnail. The spec is in
docs/PXMT_FORMAT.md. .asepritestill works both ways:- Open any
.asepriteor.asefile. - Use File → Export As Aseprite… to write one.
- Saving a document you opened from
.asepritewrites back to that.asepritefile.
- Open any
- The command line converts between formats:
pixmith convert hero.aseprite hero.pxmt, and back.
The command line tool now ships with the app
- macOS:
pixmith-cliis insidePixmith.app. Choose Pixmith → Install Command Line Tool… to get thepixmithcommand in Terminal, and Uninstall Command Line Tool… to remove it. - Windows and Linux:
pixmith-clisits next to the app. Help → Command Line Tool… shows the folder and how to add it to your PATH.
