Studio Lighting & Mood Background Tool

A full-screen, browser-based color and lighting environment for video calls, recordings, and ambient backgrounds.

Originally built as a fast personal tool to dial in studio lighting before Zoom meetings. It quickly became useful for background mood, focus sessions, and visual tone control. This repository open-sources the core so others can fork, remix, and extend it.

Why This Tool Exists

Most lighting problems during video calls are not hardware problems. They are tone, balance, and contrast problems.

Ring lights, panels, and lamps are slow to tune and hard to repeat. This tool acts like a digital lighting reference: instant, repeatable, and adjustable in seconds.

Think of it like a dimmer switch for mood. You do not redesign the room. You change the feel.

Benefits

Instant Mood Control

One click changes the entire visual tone. No setup, no configuration, no learning curve.

Repeatable Results

Presets and deterministic palettes let you return to the same lighting feel every time. This matters for consistency across meetings and recordings.

Hardware-Agnostic

Works with any webcam, monitor, tablet, or display. No dependency on specific lights or gear.

Focus-Friendly

Large, uncluttered visuals reduce distraction and help anchor attention during calls or work sessions.

Dual Purpose by Design

What started as a lighting reference doubles naturally as:

  • ambient background
  • mood board
  • color exploration surface

Color Theory Foundations (Practical, Not Academic)

This tool intentionally exposes only useful color theory patterns. Each option maps to a predictable visual outcome.

Monochromatic

Single hue with lightness variation. Best for calm, professional calls where consistency matters.

Complementary

Opposing colors on the color wheel. Creates energy and contrast. Useful for creative sessions or expressive backgrounds.

Analogous

Adjacent colors. Smooth, cohesive, low visual tension. Ideal for long meetings or focus work.

Triadic

Three evenly spaced hues. Balanced vibrancy without chaos. Good for playful or exploratory moods.

Split Complementary

Base color plus neighbors of its complement. More forgiving contrast than pure complementary schemes.

Tetradic

Four evenly spaced hues. Bold and expressive. Best used at lower brightness levels.

Pattern and Blend Modes

Patterns are not decoration. They control light distribution and perception.

  • Vertical and Horizontal blends simulate directional lighting
  • Diagonal adds movement and tension
  • Radial mimics center-weighted light sources
  • Conic introduces rotational flow
  • Mosaic creates structured separation

Used subtly, these patterns affect perceived depth and warmth without drawing attention to themselves.
