A firmware update is straightforward. Undo the six screws from the back of the cartridge and remove the PCB. Plug a USB C cable into a computer and plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB connector on the cartridge while holding down the small tactile button to the left of the USB connection. The PCB should never be plugged into the Colour Computer while you do this procedure or you will damage the cartridge PCB. The cartidge will now mount like a USB key on your computer. Copy across the firmware you have downloaded from the firmware page. The cartridge will then unmount itself and is ready for reinstallation in it’s case then will be ready for use.
The following games cover the full range of modes that the Tandy Colour Computer 2 can run.
| Cart | What it exercises | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Pooyan (26-3048) | PMODE 3, CG6, 128×192, four colors, green/yellow/blue/red | Blocky true colors. Border and wolves stay on that green set. |
| Zaxxon (Datasoft) | PMODE 4, RG6, 256×192, artifact colors, and SAM F moves every frame | Boot HDMI should match the composite picture, blue/orange/white. SW1 steps to flat green/black or buff/black, and the line still says RG6. Scroll should not tear or repeat a half-screen. |
| Dino Wars (Robert G. Kilgus) | CG3 pixels with SAM V6, so 128×192 of four-color pixels, plus the 6821 title | Playfield is full height, four colors. A 96-row picture stretched to fill the screen. Title stays green. |
| Mega-Bug (26-3076) | RG6 bytes with SAM V4 | 256×96, not a full 192. |
| Cave Hunter (Mark Data) | Semigraphics-24: alpha bytes, graphics-sized SAM V, 64×192, eight colors plus black | Caves and text on one screen. |
