Beacon PHP 1.1.2

Beacon PHP 1.1.2 aligns the Agent package with Beacon PHP Instrumentation 1.0.1.

The pinned native extension release provides verified binaries for PHP 8.2, 8.3, and 8.4 across Linux x86_64/arm64, macOS arm64, and Windows x86_64. Windows artifacts cover both NTS and TS builds. This release also adds PHP 8.3 to the Agent CI and release validation matrix and enforces the same immutable extension commit in both workflows.

Application instrumentation continues to come directly from official open-telemetry/opentelemetry-auto-* Composer packages; no beacon-php-contrib repository is required.

Upgrade

composer require beacon-observability/beacon-php:1.1.2
vendor/bin/beacon-php doctor

Beacon PHP 1.1.1

Beacon PHP 1.1.1 is the production replacement for 1.1.0.

It contains the same two-repository Agent architecture, official OpenTelemetry component registry, installer, diagnostics, and PDO-to-OTLP validation introduced in 1.1.0. This patch release fixes release packaging so CI-only extension sources, Collector binaries, and temporary validation files cannot enter the Composer artifact.

The release workflow now rejects development paths and any unexpectedly large package before publication.

Upgrade

composer require beacon-observability/beacon-php:1.1.1
vendor/bin/beacon-php doctor

Do not deploy the oversized 1.1.0 GitHub artifact. Its source tag remains immutable for auditability, but 1.1.1 is the supported release.

v1.1.0

beacon-v1.1.0

Beacon PHP 1.1.0

Superseded by 1.1.1. The 1.1.0 GitHub artifact unintentionally included CI-only files and must not be deployed. The immutable tag is retained for auditability.

Beacon PHP 1.1.0 adopts a two-repository architecture and removes the permanent downstream copy of OpenTelemetry PHP Contrib.

Highlights

  • beacon-php-instrumentation remains the native PHP hook extension.
  • beacon-php is now a lightweight Agent and distribution package at the repository root.
  • Framework, database, and client instrumentation is installed directly from official open-telemetry/opentelemetry-auto-* Composer packages.
  • The new beacon-php components command reports 28 supported official component packages.
  • The new beacon-php install <alias>... command installs selected components into the current Composer project.
  • beacon-php doctor now checks the extension distribution, SDK, OTLP exporter, zero-code configuration, and installed component packages. JSON output is available with --json and does not expose OTLP credentials.
  • Release validation now exercises official PDO auto-instrumentation against a real OTLP receiver.

There is no beacon-php-contrib repository and no full Contrib source mirror in the release artifact.

Requirements

  • PHP 8.2 or PHP 8.4
  • Beacon PHP Instrumentation v0.1.0 or a compatible ext-opentelemetry >= 1.4.2 build carrying the Beacon distribution marker
  • Composer 2

Upgrade

Install the Beacon extension first, then update the Agent package and select only the components used by the application:

composer require beacon-observability/beacon-php:1.1.0
vendor/bin/beacon-php install pdo guzzle
vendor/bin/beacon-php doctor

Applications that previously depended on component source from the Beacon monorepo must replace those path or VCS repositories with the corresponding official Composer packages.

Rollback

Rollback the application dependency to beacon-observability/beacon-php:1.0.0 and restore the previous component repository configuration. The separately installed native extension does not need to be downgraded when it remains at v0.1.0.

v1.0.0

Beacon PHP 1.0.0

Beacon PHP 1.0.0 is the first stable GitHub release of the Beacon Composer base package. It provides the Beacon version identity, diagnostics, and pinned compatibility ranges for the OpenTelemetry API, SDK, OTLP exporter, and the separately maintained Beacon PHP instrumentation extension.

Supported scope

  • PHP 8.2 and PHP 8.4 on Ubuntu 24.04 are validated from clean environments.
  • beacon-php doctor validates the runtime, Beacon extension identity, and required OpenTelemetry packages.
  • OTLP/HTTP protobuf trace export is validated against OpenTelemetry Collector Contrib 0.161.0.
  • Framework instrumentation remains opt-in. Applications install the required open-telemetry/opentelemetry-auto-* packages separately.

Installation

Download beacon-php-1.0.0.zip, LICENSE, and SHA256SUMS from this release, verify the checksum, and expose the directory containing the ZIP as a Composer artifact repository:

sha256sum --check SHA256SUMS
composer config repositories.beacon artifact /path/to/downloaded/artifacts
composer require beacon-observability/beacon-php:1.0.0
vendor/bin/beacon-php doctor

The Beacon PHP instrumentation extension is distributed separately. Install its v0.1.0 build for the matching PHP runtime before running the diagnostic command.

Known limitations

  • The Composer base package is distributed as a GitHub release artifact. It is not yet available through public Packagist because its source lives in the beacon-package/ monorepo subtree.
  • Prebuilt extension archives cover the runtime and platform combinations published by beacon-php-instrumentation v0.1.0. Other environments require a source build and are not part of this release acceptance matrix.
  • This release validates the base package and OTLP export path. It does not declare every Contrib framework integration supported as a Beacon component.

Upgrade and rollback

This is the first stable release, so there is no earlier stable Beacon PHP package to upgrade from. Commit composer.json and composer.lock before installation. To roll back, restore both files, run composer install, and restore the previously installed instrumentation extension and PHP configuration.
