Install or upgrade: download QuickLook.Plugin.QuickEdit.qlplugin, select it in Explorer, press Space, click Install, restart QuickLook.

New: plain text files

Files QuickLook shows in its text viewer (.txt, .json, .ps1, .py, .ini, logs and so on) can now be edited too:

  • Double-click to start editing. The word you clicked is selected, so typing replaces it. From then on it's a normal text editor: Enter adds a line and Ctrl+Z undoes.
  • Ctrl+S saves and stops editing. Esc stops editing and keeps your changes, unsaved; press Esc again to close the preview, which discards them.
  • The title bar shows whether you're editing or have unsaved changes.

Saving keeps the file's encoding and line endings, and is refused if the file changed on disk after the preview opened. Files the viewer shows differently from what's on disk can't be edited: over 5 MB, or converted for display.

Markdown editing is unchanged from v1.1.0.

Tested on QuickLook 4.5.0.

v1.1.0

@bencsmartucph bencsmartucph released this 13 Oct 11:59

Install or upgrade: download QuickLook.Plugin.QuickEdit.qlplugin, select it in Explorer, press Space, click Install, restart QuickLook.

New

  • Enter at the end of a bullet starts a new bullet below it, with the same indent and marker (numbered lists count on). Enter on the empty new bullet stops. Enter at the end of a paragraph or heading starts a new paragraph.
  • Emptying a bullet, paragraph or heading and pressing Enter or Backspace removes it from the file.
  • Ctrl+B / Ctrl+I make the selection, or the word at the caret, bold or italic; press again to remove it. Works while editing, or on text selected with the mouse.

Fixed

  • Double-clicking the space beside a list, quote or table no longer makes the whole list editable.

As before, every change is rendered and checked before it is kept, and nothing is saved until you press Ctrl+S.

Tested on QuickLook 4.5.0.

v1.0.0

@bencsmartucph bencsmartucph released this 13 Oct 11:18

Install: download QuickLook.Plugin.QuickEdit.qlplugin, select it in Explorer, press Space, click Install, restart QuickLook.

Edit a few words of a Markdown file without leaving its QuickLook preview:

  • Double-click rendered text (paragraph, heading, list item, table cell, quote or code block) and type. A double-clicked word is selected, so typing replaces it.
  • Enter or clicking elsewhere finishes the edit; Esc cancels it.
  • Ctrl+S writes the file. Nothing is saved otherwise: closing the preview discards unsaved changes.
  • Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo finished edits.

The preview is still QuickLook's own Markdown viewer (table of contents, highlighting, diagrams). Space, Esc and the arrows work as usual whenever you aren't typing.

Edits are written back as Markdown source: formatting around the change is kept (**subfolders** → **folders**), and an edit that can't be placed exactly is undone rather than guessed. Saving keeps the file's encoding and line endings, and is refused if the file changed on disk after the preview opened.

Tested on QuickLook 4.5.0.
