To all coaches and students,

BmMT Online is rapidly approaching! Please read this email in **its entirety**
as it contains the tournament day logistics. If you're getting this email, that
means that you (or your student) have registered for the event, or that you are
a coach for a team participating in the event!

## Important Information

For any immediate questions before and during the competition, please check our
[FAQ Page](/faqs/). If you have any additional questions, send us an email at
<team@berkeley.mt>.

## To-Dos

### Students

Please ensure you can sign-in to [ContestDojo] and have [Zoom] installed before
the competition. More details are listed in the Day-of Logistics section.

### Parents/Guardians

To ensure your student is able to participate in the event, please make sure
that you have completed the liability waiver on [ContestDojo]. If you're unsure
about the status of your student's waiver, please send us an email at
<team@berkeley.mt>. Students will not be allowed to participate in any of the
events without having their waiver signed, and no extra time will be given if
you are unable to start due to not having a signed waiver.

### Coaches

Please ensure that all students are assigned to teams (you have dragged them
**out** of the "Unassigned Students" section on [ContestDojo]). If there are any
outstanding concerns with your team's roster, please email <team@berkeley.mt> so
we can resolve them before the start of the Puzzle Round.

## Team (and Team Scoring)

As a reminder, students are allowed to participate in teams with 1–5 total
students. Please review the **team scoring guidelines**
[here](/events/bmmt-2026/#scoring). If you are looking for more students to join
your team, you can use our available
[Teammate Finder](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ooYpADSfROQdLR2vKL5n4kvsFyNPC7K8CZSoZ9RWyIA/edit?gid=0#gid=0).

Registration for BmMT 2026 Online will close Friday, June 5 at 11:59 PM PT.
Team and roster changes are permitted until Saturday, June 6 @ 7:00 AM Pacific
Time. If you need assistance with roster changes, please check our
[FAQ page](/faqs/) and email us at <team@berkeley.mt> if you have any additional
questions.

### [ContestDojo]

All testing rounds are completed on [ContestDojo]. All students should ensure
that they can login to [ContestDojo] prior to the event. If students were
registered by a coach, they have received an email containing their sign-in
details. If students are having trouble logging in or locating the BmMT 2026
Online event, please try the Forgot Password function, or email
<team@berkeley.mt> for assistance.

Students will use the platform to view problems, submit answers, as well as
collaborate with their teams on the Puzzle, Team, and Relay rounds. We have
opened some sample tests for students to familiarize themselves with the
software. A brief guide on how to use the site will also be shown during the
opening ceremony, though we highly encourage students to try the sample test
beforehand to ensure a smooth process.

The Puzzle Round will involve the use of a separate website, in addition to
[ContestDojo]. Instructions on how to use the Puzzle Round website will be
provided on [Zoom] prior to the start of the test.

### [Zoom]

The **entirety** of the event, including the Opening and Awards ceremonies, as
well as the testing rounds, will take place on the [Zoom] video conferencing
software. Students should download the [Zoom] software to their computer prior
to the event. Students are expected to stay on the [Zoom] meeting during the
Opening Ceremony and testing periods of the event. Students must show their
hands and their phone on the camera screen. Those without cameras during the
competition will be **ineligible** for awards, including honorable mentions.

The [Zoom] meeting link will be released 48 hours before the competition in the
emails of coaches and participants. Please send us an email at
<team@berkeley.mt> if you have not received it by that point.

### Communication

You are responsible for setting up your own communication with your team — the
BMT team will not be coordinating communication, and the main [Zoom] room will
not be able to be used to communicate with your teammates. Coaches are allowed
to help facilitate the communication prior to the testing phase, but are not
allowed to communicate during any testing phase with students.

### Activities

After the Relay Round, we will be hosting student activities. These are optional
activities that promote recreational math. We are offering:

- **Estimathon** — Got wit and strategy? Come to our Estimathon®, a contest
combining trivia, strategic planning, and sharp mathematical thinking. Teams
of up to 3 will race against the clock to tackle a challenging set of 13
Fermi-style problems, testing their ability to think fast and outsmart the
competition.

- **Puzzle Hunt** — Are you a fan of logical reasoning? Puzzle Hunt is an
experience with competition that includes lateral thinking, teamwork, patterns,
and many other elements. Teams will be racing against a time limit of 60
minutes to solve a series of puzzles, unlocking new puzzles as you progress to
reach the final mystery.

- **Countdown** — Miss the excitement of the MATHCOUNTS® Countdown Round? Come
put your mental math skills to the test in a countdown match to see who can
solve problems the fastest!

### Awards

Top-performing individuals and teams will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony
from 3:30 – 4:00 PM. For each student, we will provide an official ranking as
well as certificates. However, we are not awarding physical awards for the
online tournament.

## Tiebreakers

We will not need additional tiebreaker rounds to resolve ties following the
Automatic Tiebreaking Policy.

The Automatic Tiebreaking Policy works as follows:

1. First, problems are ordered from **hardest** to **easiest**, based on the
number of correct submissions.
1. The _n_-th hardest problem is assigned a **tiebreaking value** of
2−*n*. For example, the hardest problem will have a tiebreaking
value of ½, the second hardest problem will have a tiebreaking value of ¼, et
cetera.
1. Each student's **tiebreaking index** is calculated as the sum of their
original score and the tiebreaker values of the problems that they correctly
answered.
1. Students are ordered by their tiebreaking index, determining their tiebroken
rank.

In simpler terms, among those tied for the same score, whoever solved the
hardest problem is placed the highest, followed by the one who solved the next
hardest, and so on.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What should coaches/parents do during the event?

Coaches/parents should help their students log into [Zoom] and their
[ContestDojo] student accounts; no further action is required from coaches on
the day of the event. As long as all of your students are successfully
registered (placed on a team and their waivers are signed), then you are all
set! Coaches are welcome to join the Opening and Award Ceremonies. Due to [Zoom]
capacity restrictions, we ask that parents watch the Opening and Award
Ceremonies with their children on the same device.

### Will students be penalized for not attending the Opening Ceremony?

We will go over the schedule and how to navigate [ContestDojo] during the
opening ceremony, so we strongly encourage students to attend. While there is no
score penalty for missing the opening ceremony, students who encounter
difficulties navigating [ContestDojo] will not receive extra time. Please be
sure to attend the opening ceremony to familiarize yourself with the platform.

### Can students be in the same room while taking the individual test?

Yes. During the Individual round, students may be in the same room, but they
must work independently and **cannot communicate with other teammates**. Each
student should submit answers on their own device and refrain from
communicating. We will be monitoring submissions for suspicious patterns and
activity.

### Can students work together on the Puzzle, Team, and Relay rounds in person if they are on the same team?

Yes! We encourage students on the same team to collaborate in person or online
during team-based rounds.

### How do students submit the Puzzle, Team, and Relay rounds?

Students can choose to share a device or use their own devices to submit
team-based round answers. [ContestDojo] will automatically sync everyone's work
so that when one teammate updates an answer, it automatically updates for the
other team members, and only the most recently inputted answer is submitted.

Note that it may be helpful for team members to have their own device open (even
just to view the questions), so everyone can follow along and discuss in real
time.

### Are calculators or other reference material allowed?

Graph paper and calculators are prohibited, but protractors, rulers, scratch
paper, and compasses are permitted. You may print out the questions if you would
like. Use of AI or any other outside resource during the testing round is
strictly prohibited. **Cheating in any form will not be tolerated, and failure to
comply with all rules may result in immediate and irreversible
disqualification.** Students who have viewed the test or its solutions should
come forward and not take the tests.
