Fixes

  • Closing the lid no longer freezes the game. It now sleeps and wakes up properly.
  • The menus are faster. Opening and moving around the menu no longer lags, and holding a direction in the game list scrolls faster the longer you hold it.
  • Sharp scaling works at Fit. Tap the bottom screen → Display tab → Screen size: Fit, Scaling: Sharp for hard, even pixels.
  • OpenLara no longer shows a black screen (#5). This was a CPU emulation bug in how FIQ mode keeps its own registers, so other games that use FIQ mode should benefit too.

New

  • 800px wide mode in 2D (#4). With the 3D slider all the way down, the top screen switches to the 3DS's 800px-wide mode for sharper columns at Fit. It switches back on its own when you raise the slider. Not available on the original 2DS.
  • The version number is shown in the System tab.

Performance

  • Dynarec improvements for games that rewrite their own code in RAM. Mario Golf: Advance Tour used to throw away and rebuild its translated code dozens of times a second; that's now mostly gone. It runs much better but isn't full speed on Old 3DS yet, especially on the swing screen. If the sound crackles, turn on Speed tab → Audio when slow → Stretch.
  • Galaxy and Need for Speed Underground were also reported as stuttering. Please report whether they run better in this version.

Install

  • .3dsx: copy to sdmc:/3ds/ and launch from the Homebrew Launcher.
  • .cia: install with FBI (or another CIA installer) and launch from the HOME Menu.

Thanks

To everyone who reported bugs and sent photos of the stats overlay: they made these fixes possible. Link cable support is planned for a later version.

New 3DS owners: this fixes the crash at launch. Please let me know if it works for you; I only have an Old 3DS to test on.

Fixes

  • Crash at launch on New 3DS (a memory setup problem only New 3DS hit). Thanks to everyone who posted crash photos!
  • The menu reacts instantly; the game preview updates once you stop pressing.
  • Heavy 3D screens (like Mario Kart's menus) no longer slow the game or break up the sound: auto frame skip now skips as many frames as needed.

New

  • Display → Screen effect: Scanlines or LCD grid (with GPU display, at Fit or Stretch size).
  • HOME Menu icons per game: make-forwarders.sh builds a small CIA per game that opens gpSP 3D straight into it. See the README.
  • 3D → Floor tilt: brings the bottom of the screen nearer and the top further away, so roads in racing games get depth.
  • Gyro sensor for WarioWare: Twisted, using the 3DS gyroscope.
  • Launching with a ROM path as the argument plays that game directly (for forwarder tools).

First public beta of gpSP 3D: Game Boy Advance games with per-layer stereoscopic 3D on the Nintendo 3DS, full speed on an Old 3DS. Please report bugs and games that look wrong in 3D under Issues.

Install

  • CIA: install gpsp3d.cia with FBI. It shows up on the HOME Menu as gpSP 3D.
  • 3DSX: copy gpsp3d.3dsx to sdmc:/3ds/ and launch it from the Homebrew Launcher.
  • For sound you need sdmc:/3ds/dspfirm.cdc (dump it with DSP1). No GBA BIOS file is needed.

Highlights

  • Per-layer stereoscopic 3D with presets (Classic, Pop-out, Deep, Gentle, Flat map) or a custom depth for each layer
  • Smart layers: layers that scroll together stay at one depth, so RPG maps like Pokémon look right
  • Per-game 3D profiles (Pokémon games start on Deep automatically)
  • Full speed on Old 3DS: the dynarec runs on one CPU core and picture drawing on the second
  • GPU display with Sharp, Crisp and Smooth scaling, color styles, save states, auto frame skip and a touch menu
  • Saves are shared with RetroArch

Known limits

  • In 3D, the picture refreshes about 30 times a second on Old 3DS, while gameplay and audio run at 60 fps.
  • 3D → Method → Experimental is usually slower than Normal on real hardware.
