• Under the beam: the lighthouse keeps time for the breath (4·6, 4·4·4, 4·7·8) while the ship sails into the fog with its thought beneath it; weighed again afterwards.
• The roadstead and the evening watch: anchored ships are looked over once a day, with a lamp-oil timer; a ship seen three times in an hour goes to anchor rather than being lit again.
• Cargo: forecasts with a due date, checked on the day; the ship's log of crates; ghost ships for forecasts that keep coming to nothing.
• The chart, sounded to the bottom, with the lifeboat plan; each ship's page with its weather, ports and size by week.
• The shelf: ships quiet for 30 days go into bottles. The foghorn for sleepless nights. One reminder at watch time, only when there's something to look at. Backup to one file. English and Russian.
