A boat journey through a Japanese river valley, rendered live in the browser: seven places, four seasons, any hour, five weathers.

What's in it

• Vegetation from CC0 photogrammetry scans of Japanese species, baked into photo atlases, grown in code and instanced in three detail tiers.
• River reflections, a Kelvin wake and bow wave, height fog and god rays, snow that settles.
• A boat built plank by plank, a boatman sculling with two-bone IK, and a passenger under a red wagasa.
• A live score for koto, shakuhachi and shō in hirajōshi, yō and kumoijōshi, with temple bells, a suikinkutsu, cicadas and bell crickets placed by place, season and hour.
• 60 fps on an Apple M4 Max at 4K. A frame-time governor keeps the render scale at 1.0 for most of the river. Phones get a quick tier.
