Clipboard Copy Not Working in Chrome Extension (Works in Edge)

Steps To Reproduce

1. Open Google Chrome (latest version) on Windows 11.
2. Click the Bitwarden browser extension.
3. Open any saved login entry.
4. Click "Copy Username" or "Copy Password".
5. Press Win + V to open Windows Clipboard History.

Expected Result

The copied username or password should appear in Windows Clipboard History (Win + V), similar to when copying text normally (Ctrl + C).

Actual Result

The copied value can be pasted normally using Ctrl + V in any application.
However, it does NOT appear in Windows Clipboard History (Win + V).

The same behavior works correctly in Microsoft Edge, where the copied value appears in Windows Clipboard History.

I have the exact same issue and have been facing it since more than a month. I use Last pass password manager as well. It is the same issue there where passowrds wont show in clipboard but work nortmally with Ctrl+V.
Uninstalling both the extensions and reinstalling didnt help. Reinstalled the browser and installed just Lastpass and my Clipboard functionality came back. After I installed BITWarden however, the clipboard functionality is again lost for both the extensions.

I suspect BITWarden is causing this issue. I dont have the same issue on my other laptop with both the extensions working absolutely fine.

Reverting back to September release fixed all of my problems. I installed the BITWARDEN extension manually from GITHUB and it has resolved all my troubles.

What's the point in using a secure password manager if you're just going to undermind that security with your passwords stored in plain-text on your PC?

The extension (on Chrome) is behaving as intended and should not have this change reverted.

This behavior should clearly be the default, but just like Bitwarden enables the user to reduce their own security by setting a PIN, configuring the session timeout, or just plain storing the encryption key on their device by setting the timeout to Never, it should also be possible to allow text copied from Bitwarden to be picked up by clipboard managers.

Aside from the obvious benefit of respecting user choices, it can also absolutely make practical sense to enable this without crippling one's security. I have quite a few logins for websites and applications where autofill is not an option, so I usually copy both the username and password, knowing I can quickly access both with Win+V without having to open Bitwarden again.

Aside from that, the current implementation (if intentional) is way too aggressive. It seems that all text copied from the Chrome extension is prevented from being stored by clipboard managers. Even URLs and any random text inside the extension popup.

If possible, I would propose restricting the "do-not-store flag" to something like usernames, passwords and custom fields, and adding an option under Account Security to disable it entirely. With an appropriate warning of course.

Don't get this point. The only security wall bitwarden should propose is a master password. Once its done user should be able to do whatever he/she wants includding copying into system buffer. And it is needed in use case what described by @guyyst.

@guyyst , i dont agree that given behaviour should be default. I really dont get a sense of it. Please, describe for me vector of attack where it could be useful. And this vector shouldn't include knowledge of master pwd, of course.

It is a pretty standard requirement in my mind. I need to copy the Username Password and use it to login in one of the Visual studio extension. Using the clipboard functionality helps me save multiple clicks of going back and forth. Instead of first copying the Username in the Username Field and then go back to Bitwarden to copy the password and then again back to Visual Studio to enter it in the password field. It is frustrating to be honest.

On Browser as well, there are many pages where the extension does not give the option of Autofill and there are occasions when it would be good to have username password in the clipboard.

It was working fine till October last year. After that issues have come up.

For me, I can't even copy once. Why does the "copy password" exist if it does nothing then? The same thing happens with the desktop app. If my issue is different, can someone please let me know what's going on?

I found a temporary workaround for this issue that seems to work consistently for me.

The issue appears to occur when the PC is put into sleep mode while Google Chrome is still open with multiple browser tabs active. After waking the PC and trying to copy data to the clipboard, the copied content does not appear in Clipboard History (Win + V), even though normal paste using Ctrl + V may still work.

Temporary Workaround

The following steps helped reset the clipboard behavior:

1. Open Chrome and go to:
   Settings → Extensions → Bitwarden → Site Settings

2. Under Clipboard, change the permission to Block.

3. Close Google Chrome completely.

4. Reopen Chrome.

5. Go back to the same setting and change Clipboard permission back to Allow.

After doing this, clipboard copying starts working again for me. It seems that switching the permission to Block first and then back to Allow resets the glitch.

However, the issue does return occasionally, especially after sleep mode, and I need to repeat the same steps to fix it again.

Hope this workaround helps others until the issue is permanently fixed by the community.

it's working fully for me as normal again now last day or so, no funny actions required... but note that I never put my wall-powered-always laptop to Sleep (just full shutdowns and bootups)
