Urban Recomp 1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@blackerking blackerking released this 23 Sep 14:25

Urban Recomp runs the Super Nintendo city builder natively on Windows and Linux. You need your own copy of the US cartridge; the packages contain no game data.

A patch on 1.1.0, which brought the new widescreen renderer. Two fixes on the scenario selector, both in the card columns that only the widescreen shows:

  • The card pictures are black again. Their dark areas showed the desk's wood grain instead. The renderer laid a plank of desk under every pixel of that screen; a card picture's dark pixels are transparent, so the wood came through where the guest's own columns show black.
  • Those cards now fade in with the rest, instead of appearing at full brightness once the fade was over.

Everything else is unchanged from 1.1.0, so if you are already on it, this is a small one.

Windows

  1. Download UrbanRecomp-v1.1.1-windows-x64.zip below and unpack it.
  2. Put your US ROM (.sfc or .smc, any file name) into the folder.
  3. Start UrbanRecomp.exe.

Linux (x86-64, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or a distribution of that age)

sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0
sudo tar -xzf UrbanRecomp-v1.1.1-linux-x64.tar.gz -C /usr/local

Start Urban Recomp from the application menu, or run urbanrecomp. The game keeps its ROM, settings and saves in ~/.local/share/urbanrecomp: put your US ROM there (any file name), or pick it in the launcher.

German and French

The translations are built from your own German or French cartridge, so they cannot be shipped. With Python 3.9+ and Pillow, and the US ROM plus the German or French ROM next to the game:

python tools/make_translations.py de # or fr

The Windows package includes the script. On Linux, run it from the source tree with --out ~/.local/share/urbanrecomp. Then choose the language in the launcher.

What is in it

  • Widescreen: as wide as the aspect you pick (21:9 by default, --aspect 32:9 for the wider monitors), with the city map, the vehicles, the wooden desk, the title screen and the menus carried out into the margins.
  • Sylt as a ninth scenario, lytron's map, used with permission.
  • F10 settings menu: comfort options, cheats (the game's own debug cheats, ALL SCENARIO WON, population and class overrides), replaying won scenarios as free play, and disaster triggers behind a safety catch.
  • German and French, built from your own cartridges.

Thanks to mstan for the adaptive renderer and to lytron for the Sylt map.

Urban Recomp 1.1.0

@blackerking blackerking released this 23 Sep 11:36

Urban Recomp runs the Super Nintendo city builder natively on Windows and Linux. You need your own copy of the US cartridge; the packages contain no game data.

New in 1.1.0

  • A new widescreen renderer, and it is the default. mstan's adaptive renderer (PR #1) draws the whole picture itself instead of stretching the console's 256 columns, so the margin is as wide as your screen: 21:9 by default, and --aspect 32:9 if you have the monitor for it. The city map, the vehicles, the title, the menus, the wooden desk, the scenario cards and the fax all continue into it. The previous renderer is still there -- turn the new one off in the launcher (Widescreen → Enabled) or with --video-config -- and authentic 4:3 is unchanged.
  • The SIMCITY billboard on the title screen. Its animation is read from the game's own channel now, so it crosses the whole margin with its lettering blinking, leaves at the true edge instead of parking against the border, and no longer appears at the wrong edge before its scene starts.
  • The billboard no longer shivers. The game writes its sprites one frame before it moves the skyline they hang over, so the board stepped against the tower for the whole crossing -- on hardware too. It is now put on the frame its own scroll belongs to. SC_SIGN_ALIGN=0 restores the original behaviour.

Fixed, from play reports

  • The title's row of lights was dragged and squeezed while it moved right to left.
  • The wooden background arrived late when the scenario selector faded to the fax.
  • The train was not pixel-exact where the margin meets the original picture.
  • The train jittered when you scrolled left with the cursor.
  • Vehicles and the scenario cards' pins and win marks are drawn by the new renderer as well.

Windows

  1. Download UrbanRecomp-v1.1.0-windows-x64.zip below and unpack it.
  2. Put your US ROM (.sfc or .smc, any file name) into the folder.
  3. Start UrbanRecomp.exe.

Linux (x86-64, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or a distribution of that age)

sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0
sudo tar -xzf UrbanRecomp-v1.1.0-linux-x64.tar.gz -C /usr/local

Start Urban Recomp from the application menu, or run urbanrecomp. The game keeps its ROM, settings and saves in ~/.local/share/urbanrecomp: put your US ROM there (any file name), or pick it in the launcher.

German and French

The translations are built from your own German or French cartridge, so they cannot be shipped. With Python 3.9+ and Pillow, and the US ROM plus the German or French ROM next to the game:

Urban Recomp 1.0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@blackerking blackerking released this 22 Sep 13:57

Urban Recomp runs the Super Nintendo city builder natively on Windows and Linux. You need your own copy of the US cartridge; the packages contain no game data.

New in 1.0.2

  • Vehicles in the widescreen margin. The ship, the plane, the helicopter and the train now carry on through the added picture instead of vanishing at the edge of the original 256 pixels, and they move in step with the map while you pan.
  • Win marks and pins on every scenario card, including the columns only the widescreen shows (San Francisco and Detroit on the left, Las Vegas and free play on the right) and the Sylt card, which now has its own pin and shows its win mark once won. They stay on screen while the selector fades to the fax and back, and the whole selector, the Sylt card included, now fades in together.
  • German: the bank's loan page is complete. It shows the "x" in "= 500 x 21" and the RÜCKZAHLUNG sign. Build your German files again (python tools/make_translations.py de) to get it.
  • F10 menu: the scenario unlock moved to the cheats and is now called ALL SCENARIO WON. With Sylt on, it marks Sylt as won too.
  • Fixed: vehicles came apart at the edge of the picture while panning.

Windows

  1. Download UrbanRecomp-v1.0.2-windows-x64.zip below and unpack it.
  2. Put your US ROM (.sfc or .smc, any file name) into the folder.
  3. Start UrbanRecomp.exe.

Linux (x86-64, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or a distribution of that age)

sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0
sudo tar -xzf UrbanRecomp-linux-x64.tar.gz -C /usr/local

  • Widescreen: 96 extra pixels on each side, with the city map, the vehicles, the wooden desk, the title screen and the menus carried out into the margins.
  • Mouse: F3 lets the mouse move the cursor; left button is B, right button is A and pans the map.
  • Saving: cities saved in the game are kept in urbanrecomp-us.srm; save states on Shift+digit and digit.
  • Fixes to the original: the post-load power dropout (found by Truttle1), the stepwise bulldozing delay and the cursor cadence.

Known issues

  • The title's SimCity sign fades out in the left margin instead of leaving the picture cleanly.
  • Using the mouse inside a menu can break the widescreen colours.
  • The launcher needs OpenGL 3.3; without it the game starts directly with the saved settings.

The adaptive widescreen renderer by @mstan (any aspect ratio, resizable window) is being finished against this checklist.

Licence

Urban Recomp is MIT-licensed. The program includes snesrecomp, licensed PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0, so these packages may be used and passed on for noncommercial purposes only. Urban Recomp is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Electronic Arts, Maxis or Nintendo.

Thanks

@mstan for snesrecomp and recomp-ui, lytron for the Sylt map, Truttle1 for finding the power bug, and Selicre for the mouse patch the cursor control is based on.

@blackerking blackerking released this 18 Sep 19:31

Urban Recomp runs the Super Nintendo city builder natively on Windows and Linux. You need your own copy of the US cartridge; the packages contain no game data.

New in 1.0.1

  • Linux. A Linux build, with a menu entry and the Urban Recomp icon in every size, and the window tied to it so the dock and task switcher show the icon too (X11 and Wayland).
  • Window icon everywhere. The icon is compiled into the program, so every window shows it, with or without the launcher.
  • Clean-up: tidier Sylt files, and leftovers removed from the repository.

Windows

  1. Download UrbanRecomp-v1.0.1-windows-x64.zip below and unpack it.
  2. Put your US ROM (.sfc or .smc, any file name) into the folder.
  3. Start UrbanRecomp.exe.

Linux (x86-64, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or a distribution of that age)

Known issues

  • Trains and planes show one tile in the widescreen margins, then vanish.
  • The title logo's building pieces move wrongly; the title sign parks in the left margin for a while.
  • In the scenario selector, the widescreen-only columns show no win marks.
  • Using the mouse inside a menu can break the widescreen colours.
  • The launcher needs OpenGL 3.3; without it the game starts directly with the saved settings.

The adaptive widescreen renderer by @mstan (any aspect ratio, resizable window) is being finished against this checklist.

Urban Recomp 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@blackerking blackerking released this 18 Sep 13:08

The first release of Urban Recomp: the Super Nintendo city builder, running natively on Windows. You need your own copy of the US cartridge; the package contains no game data.

Download and start

  1. Download UrbanRecomp-v1.0.0-windows-x64.zip below and unpack it.
  2. Put your US ROM (.sfc or .smc, any file name) into the folder.
  3. Start UrbanRecomp.exe.

The launcher lets you pick the ROM and set window size, fullscreen, widescreen, language, the Sylt scenario and the keys. It needs OpenGL 3.3; without it the game starts directly with the saved settings.

What is in it

  • Widescreen: 96 extra pixels on each side, with the city map, the wooden desk, the title screen and the menus carried out into the margins.
  • German and French, built from your own German or French cartridge with tools/make_translations.py (included; needs Python and Pillow). The translations cannot be shipped, since they carry text and artwork from those cartridges.
  • Sylt as a ninth scenario, lytron's map, used with permission.
  • F10 settings menu: comfort options (fast ticks, drag turbo, pan and mouse speed, fast cursor), scenario unlock, replaying won scenarios as free play, the game's own debug cheats, population and class overrides, and disaster triggers behind a safety catch.
  • Mouse: F3 lets the mouse move the cursor; left button is B, right button is A and pans the map.
  • Saving: cities saved in the game are kept in urbanrecomp-us.srm, a plain SRAM image; save states on Shift+digit and digit.
  • Fixes to the original: the post-load power dropout (found by Truttle1), the stepwise bulldozing delay, and the cursor cadence.
  • F2 opens the game's hidden debug menu on the quit screen; Tab fast-forwards.

  • Over Remote Desktop the audio device runs 1-3 % slow; the game adapts the playback rate, so music may sound very slightly flat there.

The adaptive widescreen renderer by @mstan (any aspect ratio, resizable window) is being finished against this checklist and is planned to replace the current widescreen in a later version.

Licence

Urban Recomp is MIT-licensed. The program includes snesrecomp, licensed PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0, so this package may be used and passed on for noncommercial purposes only. All third-party licences are in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md and the licenses folder. Urban Recomp is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Electronic Arts, Maxis or Nintendo.
