New

  • :checkhealth vellum checks Neovim and Node (20.6+), renders a test diagram end to end, and says whether images can show in your terminal.
  • Says why images don't show. If images can't show, the preview tells you why, once per session: your terminal, termguicolors off, tmux without RGB, or tmux allow-passthrough off.
  • Follow links. gx or <CR> on a link in the preview:
    • web links open in your browser;
    • #heading links jump to the heading;
    • links to other markdown files open them in the source window, and the preview follows;
    • reference-style links work too.
  • Obsidian markdown.
    • Callouts (> [!question]- Title) get the colors and titles of the matching alerts.
    • ==highlight== renders.
    • [[note#heading|alias]] shows as a link that finds the note in your vault.
  • Export. :Vellum export writes a PDF beside the file; :Vellum export notes.html writes a self-contained HTML file. Diagrams, math, alerts and footnotes are included, and <details> blocks are opened.

Fixed

  • If Chrome or Node crashes mid-session, the renderer now restarts and finishes the waiting diagrams. Before, they stayed failed until you restarted Neovim.

Upgrading

Export needs two new renderer packages. lazy.nvim installs them when it updates the plugin. With another plugin manager, run npm ci in the plugin's render/ folder. Until then, everything except export keeps working.

First release.

  • :Vellum opens a live preview of GitHub-flavored markdown in a split beside the buffer.
  • Mermaid diagrams, display math (KaTeX) and images render as real images in kitty and Ghostty, including through tmux and ssh.
  • Inline math renders as Unicode text.
  • Scroll sync works both ways: the preview follows your cursor, and scrolling the preview scrolls the source.
  • <CR> on a diagram or image opens it full-screen. Zoom with +/- or Ctrl+wheel; pan with hjkl or the wheel.
  • Colors come from your colorscheme.
