Blacksmith v1.0.12
Release Notes - v1.0.12
Overview
This release focuses on comprehensive reconciler hardening to prevent production crashes and ensure maximum uptime through defensive programming practices.
Key Features
🛡️ Production Crash Prevention
- Panic Recovery: Added comprehensive panic recovery in main reconciliation loop and all goroutines
- Stack Trace Logging: Detailed stack traces for debugging while maintaining service availability
- State Cleanup: Proper cleanup of locks and state even when panics occur
- Metrics Integration: Panic events tracked in metrics and status updates
⚙️ Configuration Safety
- Enhanced Validation: Config validation now sets safe defaults instead of failing
- Deadlock Prevention: Ensures channel buffer sizes are always positive
- Timeout Validation: All timeout values validated to prevent nil/zero timeouts
- Auto-correction: Invalid rate limits, retry configs, and batch sizes automatically corrected
- Concurrency Limits: MaxConcurrent set to minimum of 1 to prevent channel deadlocks
🔒 Nil Pointer Protection
- Rate Limiter Safety: Nil checks for all rate limiters before Wait() calls
- Circuit Breaker Handling: Nil checks for circuit breakers with graceful fallback
- Vault Updater Checks: Safe handling of vault updater operations
- Interface Safety: Proper nil checks for interface{} components throughout
- Bounds Checking: Safe array/slice access with proper bounds validation
🚀 Startup Sequencing & Vault Readiness
- Vault Health Check: Added
isVaultReady()health check in reconciler adapter - Startup Wait: Waits up to 30 seconds for Vault initialization and unsealing
- Degraded Mode: Continues with degraded functionality if Vault isn't ready
- Component Validation: Validates all critical components at startup with clear logging
📊 Enhanced Observability
- Configuration Logging: Detailed startup configuration logging for debugging
- Error Context: Enhanced error context in
processDeploymentwith debug logging - Component Status: Clear messages about missing/disabled components
- Validation Warnings: Warning logs for component validation failures
- Instance ID Tracking: Instance ID extraction logging for troubleshooting
🔄 Graceful Degradation Design
- Continued Operation: System continues with available components rather than failing
- CF Manager Resilience: Missing CF manager doesn't crash - just skips CF discovery
- Circuit Breaker Fallback: Missing circuit breakers don't crash - operations run directly
- Vault Independence: Vault unavailability doesn't block startup - runs degraded
- Diagnostic Messages: Clear identification of degraded features

Benefits
- Zero Downtime: Production code recovers from panics, never crashes
- Defensive Programming: Validates everything before use
- Progressive Enhancement: Works with whatever components are available
- Clear Diagnostics: Operators know exactly what's happening
- Maximum Uptime: Continues operating even when misconfigured
Deployment Notes
This release ensures the reconciler is production-ready with maximum reliability, operating safely even when:
- External services are unavailable
- Encountering malformed data
- Configuration issues exist
- Resource constraints occur
The system now prioritizes uptime over perfection, gracefully degrading functionality while maintaining core operations.
