Based on the available documentation, Frigate currently supports the Hailo-8 and Hailo-8L AI Acceleration Modules(1)(2)(3). The documentation does not mention the Hailo-10H or the new Raspberry Pi AI HAT+ 2.

The existing Hailo integration in Frigate automatically detects hardware architecture and selects appropriate default models for Hailo-8 and Hailo-8L devices(3). Since the Hailo-10H is a different chip with different capabilities, integration work would likely be needed to support it in Frigate.

The Hailo team contributed the code for the Hailo-8, they will likely need to make changes to support any newer hardware.

what's so great about the hailo-10H vs the hailo-8? I'm just hoping the 10H causes a driver bump to the latest for 8 as well because the docs want a very old version of the driver for frigate support and I'm curious what I'm missing on the newer drivers.

The main advantage is that it seems the Hailo-10 can run LLMs, and supports a service that allows loading and unloading models dynamically so theoretically it could work and serve multiple services in Frigate at the same time.

Hailo-8 and Hailo-10 have entirely different drivers, so there is no bump. There is also no performance to be gained for the Hailo-8 with newer drivers.

Hi, I'm from Hailo team. We are planning to bump also the Hailo 8 version that will allow multi process same as in Hailo 10 - thus as you stated correctly it will allow multiple applications (add-ons) utilize the Hailo hardware in parallel.

Hi,

I was able to get this running on my Pi 5 with the AI HAT+ 2 (just tinkering yet).

The main issue is that the Hailo‑10 is only supported in runtime versions >5.x, while the Hailo‑8 is only supported in the 4.x
I forked frigate-nvr/hailort to build v5.1.1 and pulled those libraries into my Frigate Docker image instead of the v4.23 ones used for the Hailo‑8.

For the plugin, it’s basically a “dumb” copy of the Hailo‑8L plugin, pointing to a YOLO6n model built for Hailo‑10 from the Hailo Model Zoo.
(Next steps would be to support additional models.)

I would like to contribute to the Frigate repository, but at the moment my fork is no longer compatible with Hailo‑8 hardware.
I assume it might be possible to load one library or the other at container runtime instead of embedding it during the Docker build.
Another option would be to build a dedicated Docker image per hardware target.

I’m not sure what the best approach would be.
I would really appreciate advice from someone with a deeper understanding of Frigate’s architecture.

I think we are both using the standalone @msorenss build with 5.3.0 PCIe driver. I think the issue is that the driver does not appear to be functional with the latest RPI kernel 6.18.29+rpt-rpi-2712 as the driver makes a call to a deprecated function "del_timer_sync" in monitor.c. Once that is fixed all seems to be good...

@mikehailodev Yeah it came down to a kernel compatibility issue on my end. I used the standalone repo from @msorenss with the custom pcie driver @MisterRadish mentioned. Between those 2 items, I was able to get it working. Swapping out the del_timer_sync in monitor.c with timer_delete_sync(&monitor->timer); was key too. In short, there appears to be a compatibility issue with the pcie driver (5.3.0) and the newest kernel (6.18.29+rpt-rpi-2712) but a quick edit of monitor.c fixes the issue.

HAILO PCIe DRIVER - QUICK GUIDE (RPi5)

Goal: Get the Hailo driver working after a kernel update.

Important:

• Copy and run commands one by one.
• If a command asks for a password, enter your sudo password.

1. Go to the driver folder

cd /usr/src/hailort-pcie-driver

2. Fix file ownership in the ENTIRE tree

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER .

(Note: This must be done from /usr/src/hailort-pcie-driver, not just from linux/pcie)

3. Rebuild the module

cd linux/pcie
make clean
make all

4. Install the module

sudo make install
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe hailo1x_pci

5. Verify installation

lsmod | grep hailo
ls -l /dev/h1x-* /dev/hailo* 2>/dev/null
dmesg | grep -i hailo | tail -n 60

If you see lines similar to:

• Init module. driver version 5.3.0
• Probing on: 1e60:45c4
• Device created at /dev/h1x-0
  ...the driver is loaded correctly.

6. If make all gives "Permission denied" again
Run exactly this:

cd /usr/src/hailort-pcie-driver
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER .
find . -type f \( -name '*.o' -o -name '.*.cmd' -o -name '.*.d' \) -delete
cd linux/pcie
make clean
make all
sudo make install
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe hailo1x_pci

7. If modprobe still fails
Check if the module exists:

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -type f | grep -E 'hailo1x_pci\.ko(\.xz)?$'

If no file is found:

• The build/installation did not finish completely.
• Run steps 2 through 4 again.

8. Quick hardware test

lspci -nn | grep -i -E 'hailo|1e60|45c4|43a2|26a2'

If the card shows up in lspci but not in /dev/h1x-0, the issue is still the kernel module (not Frigate).

9. After reboot
Verify again:

lsmod | grep hailo
ls -l /dev/h1x-* /dev/hailo* 2>/dev/null

What is the use case for using the Hailo-10H with regards exclusively to Frigate? Would this [probably] give the ability to use the GenAI Object Description capabilities while maintaining the detector on a Raspberry Pi 5 platform?

Furthermore, would the LLMs that work on the 10H work well enough for object descriptions, given their relatively small size?

Hi, what's the status of incorporating support the the Hailo-10H? Above @gitowiec asked, but dispite quite a few upvotes, not one has answered in a month.

I've been running @mikehailodev build on a RPI5 for the last few months, and its been fine but obviously its a work around, and there is no upgrade path.

I know that everything can't be supported, but Halio 8 is the first detector in the Frigate guide, it would make sense to support the most current version 10. Mike from the dev team gave a working example 3 months ago. The second detector entry is Google Coral, which is then stated as not recommended anymore. Are seperate detectors out of flavour?

the detectors are definitely not listed in order of recommendation. It is just based on the table which organizes them based on how they work. Support won't come at least until Hailo10 0.19 but we are waiting on Hailo devs which have said they are working on an implementation.

What exactly are you waiting on the Hailo devs for at this stage? It's unclear to myself, and I believe others what the bottleneck is. If it's on the Hailo side, I'm happy to raise on their side, but they gave an example, and its been working for me for a while now. It was hacky, but it worked, and has kept working, but its becoming outdated. Not sure if the issue was; halio, frigate or Rpi, maybe a combination.

I think sharing with the community a little more detail would be helpful for understanding, and directing queries to the right party.

We are waiting on the Hailo devs for an implementation for Hailo10, as they have indicated that they already have one in progress which will enable Hailo8 and Hailo10 to be used together with a service that allows multiple clients to share a single Hailo hardware device.

Chiming in again. Looking for an update. I'm still running the Hailo10 on a Pi5 with the branch from a Hailo dev from 5 months ago. https://github.com/mikehailodev/frigate-hass-addons-h10

Its been rock solid, and stable. The Halio performance is running cirlces around my Google Coral instance of Frigate. Google have killed the Coral, as they usually do https://killedbygoogle.com. There is no future in Coral.

Its been 5 months now since Hailo dev provided a working version of the H10 with Frigate. And I can confirm its been working fine for months, but I want to move on to the newer versions of Frigate. My original Frigate install with a Google coral has also been running, but it can only deal with 1/2 the cameras, as it cant compete. I've kept it updated, so its on the latest Frigate.

This is going to sound blunt, but I'm hopeful it will trigger a response with detail:

• Coral is dead, end of story. Hailo H10 is current, and much faster. Theres been a working an example from a Hailo dev for 5 months, yet Frigate haven't incorporated it.
• I'm glad to see that the install docs no longer recommend the coral, but considering they arent available for purchase, thats an obvious position to take.
• The frigate instructions still only talk about the RPi 3/4, despite the 5 being out for almost 3 years at this point. And it does work on a Pi5. Not sure what the hesitation is to update the docs and support it.1
• Frigate started off leveraging, and still provides great integration with Home Assistant. Targeting adoption of an existing userbase, while working with that was great, but its now unclear what Frigate is actually targetting.
• As before, the top 2 installation instructions are for legacy/old harware. (pi3/4, Hailo-8)

Frigate is excellent, and had has come along a long way, and I want to move to it 100%. But I'm currently running my original NVR software on a Mac M series, Frigate on a Pi with Coral for stability/updates, but poor performance, AND a 2rd Frigate on a unspoorted RPi5 and unsupported Halio H10.

The Frigate on Rpi5+Halio10 wipes the floor with the other 2 solutions, although I haven't tried 24/7 recording on it like my main NVR. However Frigate doesn't support either of those platforms, so upgrading isn't possible without custom effort. I'd like to swap to Frigate at my one and only NVR+Detection platform, but since it only supports legacy hardware from the ther that was the original focus, I can't commit.

Maybe I'm not the audience for Frigate. But as the suggested hardware is still all niche products/hardware, I don't know who is?!

From my perspective, it appears that Frigate wants to move away from and hardware recommendations due to the lack of updates. If this isn't the case, when is Rpi5 going to be supported and when is Hailo H10 going to be supported?

I'm running it with a mix of h264 and h265 cameras, same config at 0.17 actually, except I commented out the 'masks' seems there format has changed.

I had trouble building the docker container on my pi5, so I added an additional guide of how to cross compile from a recent mac.

I'm trying to be friendly here. But this code was available 5 months ago, and I got it working with 0.18beta3 with minimal effort, in an hour or two. I get Halio10 needs to be a seperate device and this change makes Frigate think its a 8.

The original statement that something was needed from Hailo to support it, the delay, and essentially push back is not adding up at this point.

This just patches the existing Frigate code to only work with Hailo10, including installing the Hailo10 driver. Currently, the Hailo10 and Hailo8 drivers can not coexist, which is one of the main problems. This is not an actual viable solution as it stands to be included in Frigate.
