bonSQL 2026.10.9 is the first public release. bonSQL is a Windows desktop client for MySQL and MariaDB,
based on SQLyog Community 13.3.1 and continued independently under the GNU GPL v3 or later.

File What
bonSQL-2026.10.9-setup.exe Installer: Program Files or per-user, Start menu entries, uninstaller. Three optional items, all off unless ticked and explained inside Setup: the Visual C++ runtime (fetched from Microsoft only if missing), the MariaDB PARSEC authentication plugin (fetched from mariadb.com), the weekly check for new versions.
bonSQL-2026.10.9.zip The same program files, nothing to install: unpack and run bonSQL.exe. Needs the Visual C++ 2015-2022 runtime (x64) if your computer lacks it.
*.sha256 SHA-256 of each file.
Source code The tagged source; the prebuilt libraries' versions and sources are listed in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt and the Connector/C build recipe is in third_party/vcpkg-overlays.

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit; also runs on Linux under Wine. Servers: MariaDB 10.11 and later and MySQL 8.4 and
later are supported and tested; MySQL 8.0 works but is not tested for every release.

The files are not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may show "Windows protected your PC" the first time
you run the installer; check the SHA-256 against the value here, then More info, Run anyway.

What bonSQL adds to SQLyog Community 13.3.1

  • MariaDB: JSON columns, roles, current privileges, authentication plugins (ed25519, GSSAPI, PARSEC),
sequences, system-versioned tables, invisible and compressed columns, keywords and functions per engine.
  • MySQL 8.4 and 9: caching_sha2_password, KILL QUERY instead of the removed COM_PROCESS_KILL, current
    keyword list.
  • Connections: MariaDB Connector/C 3.4 with OpenSSL 3; SSH tunnels and SSL connections in the free
edition; SSL ticked means enforced TLS, with certificate verification when a CA is given.
  • Editor and grids: Scintilla 5 with Lexilla; syntax colouring and a Format button in the field viewer;
query running time in the status bar; Table Data filters that stay put; Table Data optionally newest first.
  • Processlist: a filter box and Kill Query beside Kill Process.
  • Look: a dark theme throughout, Fluent icons, new branding.
  • Clean: no adverts, upgrade prompts, nag screens, notifications feed or usage tracking. bonSQL connects
to your servers and nothing else. An optional weekly check for new versions, off by default, reads one
small file from bonsql.org and sends nothing.
  • Coming from SQLyog: on its first start bonSQL offers to import SQLyog's connections and settings.
They are copied, never changed, so both programs can stay installed.

Fixes

Problems reported on the SQLyog Community tracker and fixed here (numbers are the upstream issue numbers):

  • #2363 Stop Query on MySQL 8.3 and later said "Unknown command" and hung: bonSQL sends KILL QUERY.
  • #2226 After the connector's silent reconnect, init commands and the collation were lost: they are replayed.
  • #2290 Foreign key rules RESTRICT and NO ACTION shown wrongly, because MariaDB and MySQL omit different
    defaults from SHOW CREATE TABLE.
  • #2144 Execute was greyed out in the view, procedure, function, trigger and event editors.
  • #2143 # and -- comment lines inside a procedure body were dropped by Execute SQL Script.
  • #2215 F8 with a selection gave a read-only result.
  • #2227 JSON containing escaped quotes was mangled by the field editor's validity check.
  • #2152 BIT values were exported as raw bytes in every format; SQL dumps now write b'0101' literals.
  • #2175 Updating a row in a table without a primary key failed when it had FLOAT columns.
  • #2367 The column position was lost when altering a generated column.
  • #2261 Find in the field viewer ignored its keyboard shortcuts.
  • #2249, #2364 Check for Updates pointed at a dead address: replaced by the optional check described above.

Found and fixed while writing the help pages:

  • Pressing F6 or F4, or filtering the Object Browser, with no connection open crashed the program.
  • Edit > Execute Explain showed no plan in the free edition.
  • Ctrl+Shift+X was bound to two commands.
  • Flush: options the server lacks were saved as unticked, losing the choice.
  • Table Diagnostics: the Analyze option did nothing (both states sent the same thing).
  • Server Variables and Server Status showed a stray "Hide sleeping" box and hid their Value column.
  • SQL Dump: two options meant to be off came back on after any export.
  • Check constraints were rewritten without their brackets, giving invalid SQL.
  • Table designer: Alt+number did not match the numbered tabs; the index Visibility cell could not be changed
on its own; F4 on the Indexes or Columns folder opened the wrong designer.
  • Create Database built its statement without a space before the character set and without escaping the name.
  • Copy Database: a checkbox overlapped the buttons and the group title was a placeholder; SQL Dump: a cut-off
label; some two dozen message texts with spelling or wording errors.

Known limitations

  • The PARSEC plugin is not inside the package (its source carries a GPL v2-only header). Setup can fetch
MariaDB's own build; README-install.txt in the program folder says how to add it by hand.
  • Only 64-bit Windows; no 32-bit build.
  • No code signing yet.

Reporting problems

Issues: say which server (MariaDB or MySQL, version), which bonSQL
version (Help > About) and what you did. Security problems: see SECURITY.md. Code contributions are not being
accepted at the moment; see CONTRIBUTING.md.
