Android (preview)

Masterpiece now runs on Android phones and tablets (64-bit, Android 8.0 or later). Download masterpiece-0.7.0-android.apk below and open it on the device to install; Android will ask you to allow installing from the browser or file manager you used.

  • Organs open from their package, a Hauptwerk .rar or a GrandOrgue .orgue, chosen in Android's own file picker. A package on the device is read where it is, with nothing copied; one on a cloud drive is copied into the app first. Organs installed as thousands of loose files are not offered on phones and tablets.
  • Every panel opens full screen with controls sized for a finger, and the back button closes the panel in front.
  • Organs reopen when you come back to the app, even after Android has closed it in the background.
  • A USB MIDI keyboard connected before Masterpiece starts should play it, as on a computer. This has not been tried on a real device yet, so reports are welcome.

This is a first version: it has been tested on the Android emulator with the GrandOrgue demo and a Hauptwerk sample set (Mascioni of Hermance), not yet on phones and tablets in people's hands. Large sample sets need a device with enough memory; the memory options in Organ settings (16-bit samples, streamed releases, leaving ranks out) are there for that.

Future versions install over this one and keep your settings.

iPhone and iPad (preview, untested on devices)

masterpiece-0.7.0-ios.ipa is Masterpiece for iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or later). Apple only runs apps it has signed, so it is installed by sideloading, with your own free Apple ID:

  1. Install AltStore or Sideloadly on your computer, and connect your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open the .ipa with it and sign in with your Apple ID when asked. It installs the app on the device.
  3. On the device, trust your Apple ID in Settings, General, VPN & Device Management.

With a free Apple ID the app must be signed again every 7 days; AltStore can do that by itself over Wi-Fi. Organ packages go into the app's folder in the Files app.

This build has been tested in the iOS simulator, where it loads an organ package and plays it in tune, but not yet on a real iPhone or iPad. It is published so people with one can try it: please report what happens, whether it works or not.

Organ definitions

  • Compact definitions read as their long form does (#116). Definitions saved in the compact form write numbers like 127 as 1.27e+2, which were read as 1, and leave out fields that hold their default, several of which were filled in wrongly. On Nancy this showed as Settings-page levels at 0% or 1% where they should be 100% and 23%, a crescendo pedal wired to nothing, and conditional linkages working the wrong way round. Thanks to vpoguru for the report and the definition.

Fixes

  • A crash warning no longer repeats. After an unexpected exit, the warning (and skipping the organ that was loaded) happened at every start until Masterpiece was next closed normally. It now happens once.
  • --play-midi with an organ opened for the first time loaded it without its samples and recorded silence, because the first load waits in Organ settings. A scripted performance now loads straight away.
