Hotline Navigator's preferences can be accessed from the Settings menu. They let you customize your identity, appearance, notifications, and connection behavior.
The display name shown to other users on every server you connect to. This name can be changed at any time — if you're currently connected, the update takes effect immediately across all active sessions without needing to disconnect and reconnect.
Allows other users to send you private messages and enables the private messaging features within the client. When disabled, incoming private message requests are ignored.
When enabled, the server's banner image (if provided by the server) is displayed at the top of the server window. The banner fades in after it has loaded.
Appends a timestamp beside each chat message in the chat view. Timestamps can be toggled independently of Chat History.
Makes URLs found in chat messages, board posts, news articles, and server agreement dialogs into clickable hyperlinks that open in your default browser.
When enabled alongside Clickable Links, image URLs in chat and messages are rendered as inline image previews (capped at 300×300 px). Clicking an inline preview opens the full image in your default browser. Because images are fetched directly from their external URLs, this setting has privacy implications — the remote server will receive a request from your IP address.
Note: This option requires Clickable Links to be active.
Automatically detects and renders markdown formatting — including links, images, bold text, lists, and code blocks — in chat, private messages, news articles, and board posts. Useful when connecting to modern servers that post formatted content.
Controls whether markdown is rendered inside server agreement dialogs specifically. Many servers display their agreements as ASCII art, so this setting is recommended off to preserve the intended formatting.
When a user's icon is not available in the bundled local icon set, Hotline Navigator fetches it automatically from hlwiki.com. This keeps user lists looking correct even on servers with custom or extended icon sets.
Displays banner icons (typically 232×18 pixels) behind usernames in the user list, as provided by the server. When turned off, remote icons are clipped to the standard icon size rather than being displayed at their full banner dimensions.
When connecting to a server from a tracker listing, Hotline Navigator probes the server to check whether it supports TLS (encrypted connections). If TLS is available, a secure connection is used automatically; otherwise it falls back to a plain connection. This setting applies to tracker-based connections — TLS can also be toggled per-bookmark in the bookmark's edit dialog.
Shows a pop-up notification when another user @mentions your name in chat. Mentions are always recorded in the notification history log regardless of this setting — this toggle only controls whether a visible pop-up appears.
A list of usernames from whom you will receive no notifications or sounds. Useful for suppressing noise from bots or disruptive users. Enter a username in the field and click Mute to add them to the list.
A list of keywords that trigger the same highlight and notification as a direct @mention when they appear in chat. Matching is case-insensitive and whole-word. Enter a word and click Add to include it in the list.
Controls the color scheme of the Hotline Navigator interface.

Sets the folder where all downloaded files are saved. Defaults to your system's Downloads folder. Click Choose… to open a native folder picker and select a different location. The chosen folder persists across sessions.
Restores the built-in default tracker and server bookmarks if you have previously removed them. This is useful if you want to reset your server list to the out-of-the-box state without affecting any bookmarks you've added manually.
Chat messages are stored in an encrypted database on your device while connected to a server (powered by Tauri Stronghold). Up to 1,000 messages are retained per server, with older messages automatically trimmed. History can be cleared on a per-server basis or all at once from this section of Settings.
Privacy note: Chat history is encrypted at rest on your local device. Messages are not sent to any external service.
