Issue with MQTT/Websockets

There is currently an issue with the MQTT/Websocket stream.
I'm doing the best I can to investigate and fix it ASAP

Hi, thanks for the update.

We are integrating OpenF1 live data in an iOS app using the documented MQTT/WebSocket endpoints.

REST works for us, but the live broker still seems offline/unreachable from our side:

• wss://mqtt.openf1.org:8084/mqtt times out
• mqtt.openf1.org:8883 times out
• both resolve to 34.34.151.228

The timeout happens before MQTT authentication, so we cannot verify whether the token or subscriptions are valid.

Could you confirm if the MQTT/WebSocket service is currently reachable publicly?

Sorry for the late response. There is indeed an issue currently with the MQTT/Websocket broker.
I'm actively working on it for next WE, and will keep you updated.

Confirming this is still broken as of 19 June 2026.

One detail that may help: mqtt.openf1.org now has no DNS A record at all — it’s not just the ports timing out anymore. A few days ago it resolved to 34.34.151.228 with dead ports; now the hostname doesn’t resolve:

$ dig +short mqtt.openf1.org
(no answer)

$ nslookup mqtt.openf1.org
*** Can't find mqtt.openf1.org: No answer

For comparison, the rest of the infrastructure resolves and works fine:

$ dig +short api.openf1.org
142.132.189.108        # REST API healthy

$ dig +short openf1.org
185.199.108.153        # site up

So both mqtt.openf1.org:8883 (MQTT/TLS) and wss://mqtt.openf1.org:8084/mqtt (WebSocket) are unreachable because the broker hostname no longer resolves. REST is unaffected. Tested from two unrelated networks with the same result.

I had to remove the DNS record because the server was getting spammed and was therefore difficult to work with. The system needs more protection from abusive usage. I'm actively working on it for next WE, and will keep you updated.

It looks like the mqtt connector failed at about 42 minutes into the first practice session, any specific reason?

Hello @hendriksmit, according to logs, everything worked properly from the MQTT broker point of view. This plot is the number of messages broadcasted against time.
What error did you encounter specifically? Did you try restarting the client on your end?
Did someone experience the same?

i see, after exactly 1 hour the MQTT connector closed and upon re-connection "Connection refused: Bad username or password", but I did not change any username or password. Never had this issue before, I only had 1 connection. This is my log:
