buttonoo 1.0.1

@ftbinge ftbinge released this 11 Aug 18:42

Bug fixes. Installs straight over 1.0.0, your settings are kept.

Download app-arm64-v8a-release.apk — that's the one for every Nothing and CMF phone.

Fixed

  • Camera works. Mapping a press to the camera did nothing at all before.
  • Settings scrolls again. The page was stuck, so you couldn't reach anything past the first screenful.
  • App shortcuts now tell you why they're empty. Android only lets your default launcher open another app's shortcuts, so buttonoo can't do it — it used to just show a blank list for every app. Map the app itself, or a specific activity, instead.
  • Haptic strength now uses the same slider-style tabs as the overlay settings.

Worth knowing

Actions that open an app won't show up while your phone is locked. Android keeps them behind the lockscreen until you unlock. Torch, volume, brightness, ringer and media all work fine locked — just switch that gesture on under Behaviour.

If the accessibility toggle is greyed out after installing:

Settings → Apps → buttonoo → ⋮ (top right) → Allow restricted settings

Android blocks sideloaded apps from accessibility until you allow it. Installing through F-Droid or Obtainium skips this.

Get 1.0.1 instead — it fixes the camera action and a stuck Settings page.

The first release.

Download app-arm64-v8a-release.apk — that's the one for every Nothing and CMF phone.

What it does

Your Essential Key does one thing out of the box. buttonoo gives it five.

Single press, double, triple, quadruple and hold — map each one to whatever you like:

  • Open an app, or a specific screen inside an app
  • Torch on and off
  • Volume or brightness
  • Cycle ring / vibrate / silent
  • Assistant
  • A column of apps to pick from

A small overlay on the edge of the screen shows you which one fired.

Setting it up

Double, triple, quadruple and hold work the moment you grant the accessibility permission. That's it.

Single press is the awkward one — Essential Space holds it at the system level, and no app can take it back on its own. You have to disable the packages that own it. buttonoo walks you through four ways to do that: tapping through App Info, wireless ADB paired on the phone itself, Shizuku, or ADB from a computer. Nothing gets uninstalled, and you can undo all of it from inside the app.

You'll need

A Nothing or CMF phone with an Essential Key, on Android 13 or newer.

Other phones with a spare hardware key may work — buttonoo watches the raw key code and nothing about it is Nothing-specific — but nobody has tried it.

Privacy

No internet, no analytics, no accounts, no trackers. Your settings stay on your phone.

The accessibility service sees one hardware key and nothing else. It never asks for permission to read your screen, so it can't see what you type or what's on it.

The INTERNET permission exists only for the built-in wireless ADB option, which talks to your own phone and nowhere else.
