Release list
Ultima V Redux v0.1.0-preview.4
What's new in Preview 4
- Faster combat: Combat Speed now goes up to 20x (0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x or 20x). The pause between enemy turns and the floating damage numbers now speed up with it too. A saved 2.5x or 3.5x becomes 3x or 4x.
- Arms shop: no longer crashes when buying or selling readied quantities.
- Underworld Word of Power: Yelling a Word of Power from the Underworld side now opens the dungeon, as in the original. Previously the party could be stranded below.
- Final Gate clue: once you have read the Codex, Journal → Dungeons shows the Word of Power for the final gate.
- Gameplay fixes: sailing stops when you use a command or switch away from the window; outdoor Klimb finishes properly; leaving the Keep clears a Shadowlord who was present; Jimmy breaks a key on magic-locked doors in combat too; camp ambushers no longer appear on a party member's square; talk history keeps its full length; the finale recovery choice appears whenever the box is missing.
- Consistent controls: every dialog and shop shows key hints the same way (
[Key] Action); Space pages item details in Ready, the Atlas and the save slots; unavailable rows say so in text as well as colour. - Window and title screen: closing the window asks before exiting; Esc on the title screen asks too. Press V on the title screen to show the version.
- High-DPI displays: window sizes now match real screen pixels on scaled desktops, with a new 1600×900 option.
- Original data: game files are found regardless of the letter case of their names.
Saves from earlier previews still load.

Download the matching archive and SHA256SUMS. Compare its SHA-256 hash using shasum -a 256 (macOS), sha256sum (Linux), or Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 (PowerShell). Extract the entire archive, retaining credits and notices. Go is not required.
From a terminal in the extracted directory, run ./ultimav on macOS/Linux or .\ultimav.exe in Windows PowerShell. Use that explicit path to avoid starting an older installation.
Original game data and saves
You must supply your own complete original Ultima V installation; it is not included. Follow the setup screen to confirm a detected installation, copy the original files into the displayed home-folder UltimaV directory, or configure your existing installation through Open Settings File and Check Saved Settings.
Native saves use envelope version 2 and snapshot version 24. Supported snapshot versions 12–23 are promoted on load; envelope-1 files and snapshot versions 4–11 are not runtime decode paths. Back up your saves before upgrading; this release does not establish compatibility with every historical preview save. Original SAVED.GAM/SAVED.OOL pairs can be imported using Import from Legacy from the active game-data directory. The optional standalone save converter is not included.
Installation guidance · Save compatibility
The bundled installation guide was written before publication and still says that no packaged release has been published. These release notes supersede that availability statement; its setup instructions still apply.
Verification and limitations
- Local game validation passed for the packaged source commit.
- All four production targets built; archive hashes, binary hashes, target metadata, payload membership, and bundled notices were checked.
- The extracted macOS arm64 binary passed
--helpand an eight-second--no-soundstartup check outside the source checkout using a fresh home directory. - This bounded startup check is not full interactive graphics, keyboard, audio, original-data setup/recovery, or save/load acceptance.
- Windows and Linux remain cross-build-only: native runtime acceptance has not been established. Intel macOS is not included.
- Binaries are unsigned and are not signed installers or macOS app bundles. Review macOS/Windows download prompts for this specific application; do not disable system-wide security protection.
- The game UI is keyboard-only. A desktop graphics/audio environment is required. Linux distribution-specific runtime requirements remain subject to native validation.
Project code and bundled media have separate applicable terms; retain LICENSE, ASSET_CREDITS.md, the audio attribution manifest, font companion notices, and notices/.
