Project Okran 0.4.0 alpha
The fourth downloadable build of Project Okran, an open rewrite of Kenshi. Still an early alpha: save often.
You need your own copy of Kenshi (Steam or GOG) installed. This download contains none of Kenshi's files; it reads them from your install.
How to play (Windows)
- Download
Project-Okran-windows.zipbelow and unzip it anywhere. - Run
kenshi.exe. It finds a Steam install of Kenshi by itself; otherwise start it with your Kenshi folder:kenshi.exe "D:\Games\Kenshi". - If Windows SmartScreen warns about an unknown app, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Settings and saves go to %APPDATA%\kenshi-rewrite. Nothing is written into your Kenshi folder.
Updating from 0.3.0
No uninstall needed: replace the old kenshi.exe with the new one (or unzip into a fresh folder). Your saves and settings in %APPDATA%\kenshi-rewrite carry over, and 0.3.0 saves are tested to load. Back that folder up first, as this is an alpha.
New since 0.3.0
- Movement as Kenshi moves people:
- Characters slide along walls and step round each other by Kenshi's own rules.
- Path goals are placed clear of walls, with Kenshi's free-spot search.
- Kenshi's nav areas and gate codes.
- The world populated as Kenshi populates it:
- Kenshi's population tick over every loaded zone: roaming squads, nests, the homeless and animals spawn at Kenshi's spawn points, in Kenshi's numbers.
- Bar crowds, prisoners in their captors' own buildings, nests filled by their own managers.
- Every town in the game is its own town (304 of them), and town changes apply as zones load.
- Physics:
- Knocked-out bodies get up where they lay, and ragdolls collide with each other.
- Bodies float in water, and settle on ledges instead of jittering.
- Severed limbs fall off and roll.
- Fallen trees and big rocks hold bodies up.
- Mining: the iron and copper rocks out in the world are back, and your people can mine them.
- Raids and campaigns:
- Raids with an announcement deliver it first. The Shek tribute talks to you, then leaves with "I'll be back tomorrow".
- Kenshi's time limits, wins and losses. A beaten raid comes back 40 to 96 hours later.
- Raids gather their squads as Kenshi does, follow a moving target, and redirect when their target is gone.
- Raids can target your outposts that have your people in them.
- Your base:
- Farms work as Kenshi's.
- Machines are fed and emptied as Kenshi does it, and hauling runs on the AI planner.
- The building panel, with upgrades and downgrades.
- Operators train the machine's skill.
- People:
- NPCs walk up to talk to you: guards shoo you, and slavers have their own lines.
- NPCs hold conversations with each other, line by line.
- Raid squads break off fights to save themselves.
- Combat and animation: the sneak walk and run crouch; weapons follow equipment changes.
- Interface: the faction tab with your known factions and relations, Kenshi's item tooltips (stolen, buyback, crafted by, uniques).
Fixed
- Traders' goods were invisible in the trade window.
- Bodies knocked out indoors could fly into the sky.
- Invented town patrols removed.
- Faster: path requests, frame times and the first-frame stall.

Project Okran 0.3.0 alpha
The third downloadable build of Project Okran, an open rewrite of Kenshi.
Updating from 0.2.0
No uninstall needed: replace the old kenshi.exe with the new one (or unzip into a fresh folder). Your saves and settings in %APPDATA%\kenshi-rewrite carry over. Back that folder up first, as this is an alpha. Text is a little bigger than in 0.2.0, because Kenshi's own default Font Size setting now applies. Lower Font Size in Options if you prefer the old size.
New since 0.2.0
- Towns that live by Kenshi's AI:
- Residents walk home and stay in, and lock up at night; shopkeepers open up in the morning.
- Gate guards man their gates.
- Squad members follow their leader's goals, so bar crowds relax and bandit camps sit around their campfires.
- Medics treat the wounded with medkits.
- Guards pick out troublemakers, raise alarms and investigate them.
- NPCs see and hear.
- Undertakers and cannibals dispose of bodies.
- Knocked-out intruders are carried out of homes.
- Towns peopled as Kenshi peoples them: Mad Cat-Lon is in his palace, and Fort Simion and Ghost have their people.
- Your squad's jobs run through Kenshi's AI planner, in job order, with JOBS on or off. Build, Repair, Operate and Training orders fetch their own materials. Idle characters sit, rest when hurt and ditch extra items.
- Raids and campaigns go through Kenshi's stages (approach, assault, victory or defeat) and target your outposts in the faction's territory. Slavers take their captives to slave camps.
- Combat and animation:
- Carried bodies hang over the shoulder as in Kenshi, with Kenshi's lift and put-down timing.
- Crawlers stay down.
- Prone fighting uses the crawl animations.
- Animals turn and strafe.
- Weapons are sheathed until drawn.
- Indoor weapon bonuses and dust storms apply to attacks and martial arts.
- Punches and kicks have their own sounds.
- Physics: ragdolls use the values Kenshi gives its physics engine, and characters push apart by Kenshi's own rule.
- World and graphics:
- Building interiors are shown as Kenshi shows them.
- Doors lift or slide the right way.
- Lamps go dark by day.
- Birds fly in Kenshi's flocks.
- Kenshi's interactive music plays.
- Player buildings block paths by their real shape.
- Camera: Kenshi's camera and free camera mode (
;). Double-click a portrait to follow that character; shift-click to add to the selection. - Interface:
- The options menu now actually changes the game: volumes, view distance, shadows, fonts, camera, gameplay sliders and more.
- Kenshi's UI colours.
- Tutorial pointers.
- Drop-down menus.
- Kenshi's health bar tooltips.
- Drag to reorder research and crafting queues.
Fixed
- Characters:
- People standing inside each other.
- Crawlers standing back up when moved.
- Guards arresting you for "kidnapping" your own knocked-out squad mate.
- Buildings and doors:
- Doors sliding into streets and walls.
- Invisible doors in ruins.
- Ground filling sunken buildings after the window changed size.
- NPCs standing idle: guards, gate guards, bar crowds and camp members.
- Raids: raids stalling short of their target.
- Settings: the population multiplier ignoring your saved settings.
- Crash: a crash in the law code.
- Smaller issues: many more.

Project Okran 0.2.0 alpha
The second downloadable build of Project Okran, an open rewrite of Kenshi. Still an early alpha: save often.
You need your own copy of Kenshi (Steam or GOG) installed. This download contains none of Kenshi's files; it reads them from your install.
How to play (Windows)
- Download
Project-Okran-windows.zipbelow and unzip it anywhere. - Run

Settings and saves go to %APPDATA%\kenshi-rewrite. Nothing is written into your Kenshi folder.
Updating from 0.1.0
No uninstall needed: download the new zip and replace the old kenshi.exe with the new one (or unzip into a fresh folder and delete the old one). Your saves and settings stay in %APPDATA%\kenshi-rewrite and carry over; 0.1.0 saves should load, but this is an alpha, so back that folder up first.
New since 0.1.0
- A living world: NPCs protect their allies, guards defend their own town, everyone fights back when attacked; guards stand their posts and man the turrets; townsfolk shop, eat, stay home and sit around, bosses sit on their thrones; the wounded treat their own legs; looters strip bodies. Caravans travel Kenshi's road network. Nests rise at their proper places with their proper numbers, and the Dust King and other prisoners start in their cages.
- Combat: Kenshi's skill and damage formulas; heavy swings hit several enemies; animals fight with their own bodies and lunges; a character whose leg collapses fights from the ground; crossbow bolts lead their target and are stopped by the ground and buildings; turrets improve with research.
- Law and slavery: crimes, witnesses and bounties; cage escapes and prisoner release; disguises and being recognised; buying and selling slaves; the Slaves start plays as in Kenshi.
- Dialogue and quests: Kenshi's dialogue conditions and effects, faction campaigns against the player with Kenshi's warnings, bail to buy prisoners out, characters' own bounties, world states that change towns (including whether you had a hand in a death).
- Medical: splints, athletics training, bed healing, eating and getting thin as Kenshi does them.
- Your base: outposts form as in Kenshi; loot spots keep their respawn timers across saves.
- Interface: Kenshi's jobs panel (drag to reorder), stats, map, faction and inventory panels, squad management, Kenshi's own tooltips everywhere, the full options window with key bindings and a mods tab, tutorial tips, inventory arrange buttons, research and crafting queues; load or start a new game without restarting.
- Sound and graphics: footsteps by surface, day and night ambience, music timing, creature calls, building lights and fires that can be off, terrain detail fixes, faces and body shapes for everyone.
- Saves: saves are also written in Kenshi's own format (untested in Kenshi itself).
Fixed
Characters attacking themselves or their own squad; nests spawning far too many people; characters sinking into floors inside buildings; a crash on start and one on closing the window; a large slowdown at the Hub; fights starting late; and many smaller issues.
