Release list
Raven 0.11.1
Raven 0.11.1
Patch release that fixes a couple of rough edges in anchor preferences introduced in 0.11.0.
Fixed
anchorPreferencenow tags nested fragment descendants for anchor groups (fixes anchors resolving to.zerofor fragment-of-fragments output, e.g.ForEach/tuple builders).- Anchor geometry resolution now converges after DOM mutations commit by scheduling a follow-up render when resolved anchor rects change (reduces stale overlay positions after layout-affecting updates).
Raven 0.11.0
Raven 0.11.0
This release adds a SwiftUI-like preferences system (including anchor preferences) so child views can propagate values and geometry up the tree and ancestors can read/observe them.
Added
PreferenceKey+PreferenceValues- Preference modifiers:
preference(key:value:)transformPreference(_:_:)onPreferenceChange(_:perform:)(runs post-render)overlayPreferenceValue(_:alignment:_:)backgroundPreferenceValue(_:alignment:_:)
- Anchor preferences (initial support):
Anchor<CGRect>anchorPreference(key:value:transform:)GeometryProxyanchor resolution (geo[anchor]) on WASM via DOM measurement
Behavior Notes
- Preference reduction is applied in flattened view-tree order (SwiftUI-like).
onPreferenceChangeis deferred to after the render pass to avoid re-entrant renders.
Demo
The TodoApp example includes a new Prefs tab demonstrating both preference aggregation and Anchor<CGRect> resolution.
Raven 0.10.3: SwiftUI module alias support
Highlights
- Apps can write
import SwiftUI(no directimport Raven) when building for WASI, by using SwiftPMmoduleAliases. - New umbrella module:
RavenSwiftUI(re-exportsRaven+RavenRuntime).
What’s New
- Root package now ships
RavenSwiftUIas a product/target. Examples/TodoAppuses:.product(name: "RavenSwiftUI", package: "Raven", moduleAliases: ["SwiftUI": "RavenSwiftUI"], condition: .when(platforms: [.wasi]))
- Tests updated so TodoApp is allowed to import
SwiftUIwhile other examples still enforceimport Raven.
Demo
swiftly run swift run raven dev --input Examples/TodoAppRaven 0.10.2: Asset Catalogs (.xcassets) + Custom Symbols (.symbolset)
Highlights
- First-class Xcode Asset Catalog (
.xcassets) support in Raven’s CLI + runtime. - Loads assets by name at runtime:
Image("Name")(imagesets withsrcset)Color("Name")(colorsets via injected CSS variables, including light/dark)Asset.url("Name")/Asset.fetchData("Name")(datasets)
- Supports custom symbol assets from Xcode Symbol Image Sets (
.symbolset), rendered tintably (inheritscurrentColor).
What’s New
Asset Catalog Compilation (CLI)
- Discovers and compiles
*.xcassetsfrom:- The app package under
Sources/** - SwiftPM dependency checkouts (via
.build/workspace-state.jsonand.build/checkouts/**/Sources/**)
- The app package under
- Emits a manifest and injects it into served/generated HTML so assets resolve before
main()runs. - Deterministic asset IDs shared between CLI and runtime (
RavenAssetSupport).
Dev + Build Integration
raven devwatches.xcassetschanges (including dependency catalogs) and rebuilds.raven buildproduces a self-containeddist/with compiled assets under/assets/and the manifest injected intoindex.html.
Runtime APIs
Image("...")resolves via the injected manifest when available; falls back to/assets/<name>for compatibility.Color("...")resolves through injected CSS variables.- New
Assethelper for datasets.
Demo
Examples/TodoApp includes a ready-to-run asset catalog demo:
RavenMark.imageset(README raven mark)BrandPrimary.colorset(light/dark)SampleText.datasetRavenCustom.symbolsetandgit.*.symbolset
Run it:
Raven % swiftly run swift run raven dev --input Examples/TodoAppNotes
- Image assets are copied as-is (no transcoding/optimization in this release).
- Package swift settings were cleaned up to avoid flags that break Xcode builds.

v0.10.0
Highlights
Massive release: 55 commits, 445 files changed, +89K/-36K lines. Raven now has a native Swift CLI, fiber-based incremental reconciliation, fully reactive ObservableObject support, and a working WASM runtime with hot reload.
Raven CLI
New native Swift CLI replacing the Python tooling:
raven build- Production WASM builds with optimization, stripping, and Brotli compressionraven dev- Hot reload dev server with SSE-based live reload on file changes (localhost:3000)raven create- Project scaffolding- Automatic SwiftWasm toolchain detection (Swift SDK, carton, or SwiftWasm)
- Bundle size analysis with detailed breakdown
- Enhanced compiler error reporting
Fiber Reconciliation
React Fiber-inspired incremental rendering engine:
- O(dirty) reconciliation - only re-renders changed subtrees, skips clean branches
- State batching via
requestAnimationFrame- multiple state changes coalesce into one render - PlatformRenderer abstraction decouples reconciliation from DOM operations
- Stable path-based node IDs survive re-renders for handler persistence
- Dual-tree architecture (current + work-in-progress)
Mirror-Free Rendering
Eliminated all Mirror reflection from the rendering pipeline (Mirror crashes in Swift WASM):
- New
_CoordinatorRenderableprotocol - views render themselves using a_RenderContext _ModifierRenderableconvenience protocol for modifier views- All container views (VStack, HStack, ZStack, List, ScrollView) and interactive views (Button, TextField, Toggle, Slider, Picker) converted
ObservableObject Reactivity Fix
Fixed @StateObject and @ObservedObject not triggering re-renders:
objectWillChangesubscriptions now call_RenderScheduler.current?.scheduleRender()directly- Bypasses the defunct Mirror-based
setupStateCallbacksmechanism @Publishedproperty changes properly propagate through the entire render pipeline
SwiftUI App Protocol
Full @main support with App/Scene protocol hierarchy:
- Scene lifecycle tracking (active/inactive/background) via browser visibility/focus events
- Automatic framework CSS injection on launch
JavaScriptEventLoop.installGlobalExecutor()wired automatically
WASM Runtime
- WASI reactor ABI support (
-mexec-model=reactor,--export-if-defined=main) - HTML bootstrap calls
main()/__main_argc_argv(0,0)after_initialize() - Counter-based UUID generation (WASI
random_getpolyfill is broken) - Fixed event handler registration, lifecycle, and stale handler cleanup
- Input focus preservation during re-renders
Dark Mode
- 17 semantic CSS custom properties (
--system-primary,--system-background,--system-accent, etc.) @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)overrides- Runtime
matchMedialistener triggers re-render on OS theme change
New Components
- AsyncImage - Async loading with placeholder/error states
- Menu - Context menus with nested actions
- DisclosureGroup - Expandable content with CSS animations
- Grid - Flexible 2D grid layout
- GroupBox - Labeled content container
- ControlGroup - Grouped control styling
- ScrollView - Horizontal/vertical/bidirectional scrolling
- LazyVStack - Lazy loading with pinned headers/footers

.transition(.move(edge: .trailing).combined(with: .opacity))
}Loading Spinner:
Circle()
.trim(from: 0, to: 0.7)
.stroke(lineWidth: 3)
.keyframeAnimator(initialValue: 0.0, repeating: true) { content, angle in
content.rotationEffect(Angle(degrees: angle))
} keyframes: { track in
track.linear(360, duration: 1.0)
}Page Transition:
if showDetail {
DetailView()
.transition(.push(from: .trailing))
}
withAnimation(.easeOut) {
showDetail = true
}🚀 Migration Guide
From Static to Animated
Before:
@State private var scale: CGFloat = 1.0
Circle()
.scaleEffect(scale)
Button("Grow") {
scale = 1.5 // Instant change
}After:
@State private var scale: CGFloat = 1.0
Circle()
.scaleEffect(scale)
.animation(.spring(), value: scale) // Smooth animation
Button("Grow") {
scale = 1.5 // Animated change
}Choosing Animation Style
Use .animation() when:
- Property changes should always animate
- Simple property-based animations
- Visual feedback on state changes
Use withAnimation() when:
- Multiple related state changes
- Conditional animation
- Need completion callbacks
- Complex animation choreography

- Search Functionality - .searchable() with suggestions
- 142+ Tests - Comprehensive test coverage
- Complete Documentation - 1,200+ line Phase 11 guide
✨ New Features
Modern Layout APIs
1. containerRelativeFrame() (iOS 17+)
A modern alternative to GeometryReader for responsive layouts:
// Closure-based sizing
Image("hero")
.containerRelativeFrame(.horizontal) { width, _ in
width * 0.8
}
// Grid-based sizing
Rectangle()
.containerRelativeFrame(.horizontal, count: 3, span: 2, spacing: 10)Features:
- Closure-based sizing calculations
- Grid-based responsive layouts
- Axis control:
.horizontal,.vertical,.all - CSS container queries implementation
- Better performance than GeometryReader
2. ViewThatFits (iOS 16+)
Automatically selects the first layout variant that fits:
ViewThatFits(in: .horizontal) {
// Desktop: Full navigation
HStack {
Image("logo")
Text("My App Name")
Spacer()
Button("Sign In") { }
Button("Sign Up") { }
}
// Mobile: Compact (fallback)
VStack {
HStack { Image("logo"); Text("My App") }
HStack { Button("Sign In") { }; Button("Sign Up") { } }
}
}Features:
- Responsive design without breakpoints
- ViewBuilder support for multiple variants
- Axis control for measurement
- CSS container query selection
- Fallback to last variant
Scroll Enhancements
1. scrollBounceBehavior() (iOS 17+)
Control scroll bounce/overscroll behavior:
ScrollView {
// content
}
.scrollBounceBehavior(.basedOnSize) // No bounce when content fits
.scrollBounceBehavior(.always, axes: .horizontal) // Always bounce horizontallyBounceBehavior Options:
.automatic- Default browser behavior.always- Always allow bounce.basedOnSize- Bounce only when content exceeds container
2. scrollClipDisabled() (iOS 17+)
Allow content to extend beyond scroll bounds:
ScrollView {
// Cards with shadows
ForEach(items) { item in
CardView(item)
.shadow(radius: 10) // Shadow visible outside scroll
}
}
.scrollClipDisabled()3. scrollTransition() (iOS 17+)
Scroll-driven animations with phases:
ScrollView {
ForEach(items) { item in
ItemCard(item)
.scrollTransition { content, phase in
content
.opacity(phase.isIdentity ? 1 : 0)
.scaleEffect(phase.isIdentity ? 1 : 0.8)
}
}
}ScrollTransitionPhase:
.topLeading- Element entering from top.identity- Element fully visible.bottomTrailing- Element leaving at bottom
Common Patterns:
- Fade in/out
- Scale effects
- Blur transitions
- Slide animations
Search Functionality
searchable() Modifier (iOS 15+, enhanced iOS 17+)
Add search with optional suggestions:
List(filteredItems) { item in
Text(item.name)
}
.searchable(
text: $searchText,
placement: .navigationBarDrawer,
prompt: Text("Search items")
) {
// Suggestions
ForEach(suggestions) { suggestion in
Text(suggestion.name)
.searchCompletion(suggestion.name)
}
}Features:
- Text binding for real-time search
- Optional suggestions with ViewBuilder
- Placement options:
.automatic,.navigationBarDrawer,.sidebar,.toolbar - Native HTML search input
- Built-in clear button
- ARIA accessibility

🚀 Migration Guide
From GeometryReader to containerRelativeFrame()
Before:
GeometryReader { geometry in
Image("hero")
.frame(width: geometry.size.width * 0.8)
}After:
Image("hero")
.containerRelativeFrame(.horizontal) { width, _ in
width * 0.8
}Benefits:
- Simpler code
- Better performance
- Native CSS implementation
- No layout coordination needed
🎓 Use Cases
