Quick Start with Moonlight Tizen

This guide walks you through the essential steps to start streaming games from your Windows PC to a Samsung TV using Moonlight Tizen.

1. Check the Requirements

Before installing Moonlight, make sure you have:

  • A supported Samsung TV running Tizen 5.5 or newer.
  • A Windows PC capable of running a supported game streaming host such as Sunshine.
  • A supported GPU capable of hardware video encoding.
  • A stable network connection between the TV and host PC.
    • For the best experience, connect the host PC to your network using Ethernet and connect the TV using Ethernet or a reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
  • A compatible gamepad controller if you plan to play games using a controller.

For the complete list of hardware, software, and network requirements, see the Prerequisites section in the README.

2. Set Up a Game Streaming Host

Moonlight requires a game streaming host running on your PC to capture the game, encode the video and audio, and send the stream to Moonlight.

Sunshine is the recommended host for new installations and is actively maintained. Historically, Moonlight also supported NVIDIA GameStream, which was provided through NVIDIA GeForce Experience for compatible NVIDIA GPUs. GameStream is no longer recommended, but existing installations may still be usable depending on the installed GeForce Experience version and configuration.

For a new setup, install and configure Sunshine on your Windows PC and make sure it is running before attempting to connect from Moonlight. See the official Sunshine documentation for installation and configuration instructions.

3. Install Moonlight Tizen Client

Follow the Installation Guide for instructions on downloading and installing the Moonlight application using one of the recommended methods.

4. Pair Moonlight With Your Host PC

Launch Moonlight on your Samsung TV. Moonlight will scan your local network for available streaming hosts, and your host PC running Sunshine should appear automatically.

If your host PC appears:

  • Select your host PC in Moonlight to open the pairing dialog.
  • Moonlight will display a 4-digit PIN, which is needed to complete the pairing process.
  • Open the Sunshine Web UI on your host PC and select the PIN tab from the top menu.
  • Enter the PIN in the PIN box, give your client device a recognizable name, and click the Send button.
  • Once completed, Moonlight will confirm that pairing was successful and display your available applications and games from Sunshine.

If your host PC does not appear automatically:

  • Make sure the host PC is powered on and reachable from the TV.
  • Make sure Sunshine is running on the host PC.
  • Make sure the TV and PC are connected to the same local network.
  • Check that your firewall allows Sunshine through the network.
  • Select Add Host and enter the host PC’s IPv4 address, IPv6 address, or hostname.
  • Specify a custom port when adding the host if Sunshine is configured to use a non-default port.
  • Click Continue to proceed with the pairing process, and the host will be added to Moonlight once pairing is completed.

5. Connect Your Controller

If you plan to use a gamepad, connect it to your Samsung TV before starting a streaming session.

For information about supported controllers, recommended models, connection methods, compatibility, and known limitations, see the FAQ.

6. Start Your First Stream

For your first stream, start with the default Moonlight settings. These provide a reliable starting point and are broadly compatible with Samsung TVs.

With the default settings in place, select your host PC in Moonlight, then select a game or application from the available list.

Once you have confirmed that streaming works correctly, you can proceed to adjust the settings for your specific setup.

7. Adjust the Moonlight Settings

Open Moonlight’s Settings and adjust the streaming configuration according to your TV, host PC, and network capabilities.

You can adjust settings such as:

  • Resolution, such as 1440p or 4K if supported by your TV, host PC, and network.
  • Frame rate, with 60 FPS recommended for the best overall compatibility.
  • Bitrate, based on your network connection and selected resolution.
  • Audio configuration, with Stereo recommended for the best overall compatibility.
  • Video codec, such as HEVC or AV1 if supported by both the TV and host GPU.
  • HDR, if supported by the TV, host PC, game, and selected codec.
  • Other settings are also available for further customization.

Change one setting at a time and test the stream after each change to identify which configuration provides the best results for your setup. Moonlight’s performance statistics overlay can help identify problems related to network latency, frame drops, decoding performance, and other streaming issues. For instructions on displaying the performance statistics, see the FAQ.

8. If Something Does Not Work

If you encounter problems during setup or streaming, check the Troubleshooting Guide before changing settings.
