Telegram Drive Android 4.1.0
Android v4.1.0 adds native video and audio streaming from Telegram. Playback
begins before the whole file has downloaded, with bounded buffering, seeking,
resume, playback speed and picture-in-picture where supported by the format and
device.
- Sidebar fix (#212): the folder drawer stays closed until opened on phones and can be dismissed with Close, an outside tap, a left swipe or Back. Tablets and TVs also have visible close/reopen controls.
- Reachable encrypted vault (#225): Settings includes vault setup, unlock and recovery. Choosing Store & protect opens the vault flow before uploading; interrupted protected transfers link directly to vault unlock and can be retried.
- Video filename captions (#224): regular video media uploads include their original filename by default, with a switch in Preferences on Android and desktop. Spaces and Unicode names survive Android file picking; protected uploads keep filenames private.
- Safer vault recovery: recovery verification leaves your existing vault unchanged. Restoring missing keys needs a separate confirmation, prior vaults remain archived, and passphrase changes require the current passphrase.
- PDF security: upgrade to the patched PDF parser while keeping the PDF worker separate from startup.
- Settings design: grouped preferences, consistent switches with larger touch targets, a clear vault status, and navigation positioned near the bottom safe area.
- Android TV / Google TV: the universal package includes the TV launcher, remote navigation, and the same 4.1.0 feature updates as phones and tablets.
- Personal workspace: organize indexed files into collections and tags, save searches, browse a media timeline, and view photo slideshows.
- Offline trip packs: prepare a selected collection for travel, manage device storage, and review transfer activity and scheduled cleanup.
- Offline library: keep files on the device and open them after restarting
without a connection. Reconnecting preserves the current library view. - Search and favorites: search across indexed folders and filter by file
type, date or size. Mark favorites for quick access. - Tablet workspace: resize the navigation pane, view files and details side
by side, and use the keyboard to search and select files. - Player controls: double-tap either side to seek, swipe the left/right side
for brightness/volume, lock accidental touches, and select SRT or WebVTT
subtitles. Gestures are available when the playback controls are hidden. - Transfer controls: pause or resume a single item, prioritize pending work,
retry failed items, and see waiting reasons and estimated remaining time. - Telegram links: supported public/private channel or group links open the
folder or file your account can access, including when starting the app. - Optional camera backup: choose photo/video albums and a Telegram folder in
Settings → Camera backup. Background uploads skip duplicates and support
unmetered Wi-Fi and charging requirements. Interrupted uploads reuse their
prepared local copy without requiring space for a second one. Files use regular
Telegram cloud storage without the app's file encryption; originals stay on
the device. - Android file picker: browse Telegram Drive from the system's Files picker
and open files in other apps while the main screen is closed. Access respects
the current account and app lock. Android 7 supports sequential readers;
Android 8 and later also support seeking.
A temporary startup or network failure preserves your saved Telegram account
and API details. The app does not log you out for inactivity. If Telegram
revokes the session, sign in again using the retained details.
Every feature is available without payment. Existing $5 lifetime supporters
remain ad-free; this update does not require another purchase.
The main app supports Android 7.0 or later with Android System WebView or
Chrome 111 or later. PDF previews use the legacy PDF.js viewer, whose
upstream supported browser range starts at Chrome 125.
The PDF viewer also offers Open with External App. Install this update over
the existing app to retain data and supporter activation. Do not uninstall the previous version first. The separate
Android release contains only the compiled, signed APK. Desktop 4.1.0 installers
are published separately.
Upgrade from the 4.1.0 preview
This stable APK is version 4.1.0 with Android build code 4001001, newer than the
preview build 4001000. Preview users should download the stable APK from this
release and install it over the existing app once. Keep the app installed:
uninstalling deletes its local data. The package and signing certificate stay
the same so Android can install it over the existing app. Keep its data to
retain your account, vault and lifetime supporter activation.
The preview updater reads the original signed metadata format and will skip
this stable release. The stable app verifies the new signed update format for
future Android releases as well as the original format. The preview release
and its APK remain available unchanged.
The exact signed APK passed a three-phase upgrade journey on a private Android
API 36 x86_64 emulator: seed the published preview, cold-restart it, then install
stable in place. The journey preserved the app UID, browser and private-file
markers, a synthetic Keystore credential, language and caption preferences,
and a locked vault. It rejected a wrong passphrase, unlocked with the correct
passphrase, verified the saved recovery bundle and locked the vault again.
Physical-device/TV, live Telegram, active paid-license upgrade and installed
PDF/older-WebView acceptance were not run for this candidate. Synthetic secure
storage checks do not establish a real account or paid entitlement journey.
TDENC2 file encryption remains a frozen-format beta with independent
cryptographic review pending.
