[FEATURE] NixOS support for quickshell + full Hyprland environment

What would you like to be added?

Hi,
quickshell and related dotfiles are currently available mainly for Arch via AUR (e.g. caelestia-shell).
Is anyone working on native NixOS integration? I don’t mean just the quickshell library, but a full environment setup with Hyprland - including panels, widgets, and example configs.
It would be great to have a flake or nixpkgs module so we can get the same out-of-the-box experience as on Arch.

I have this working on Nix with minimal issues - you can check out the repository I use here.

Haven't pulled the recent commits via nix flake update in around a week, so I can't say if there's any breaking changes or whatever, but with the current state of Caelestia, you can add it to your flake inputs and then configure it from there pretty easily.

Both shell and cli repos have flake support. I currently have the shell running, and it's working well.

There is a built-in Quickshell module in Home Manager, works great for me.
(adding caelestia-shell as an input is still required)

I use this through a systemd user service, and adding the shell to the home.packages. I've recently opened a PR that adds a home manager module and it will do this automatically, though I will make changes to the systemd service #402

shouldn't that make this issue solved and be closed?
unless you mean a home-manager module for the entire dotfiles
which in that case i would say it should be in the caelestia-dots repo

About the issue, it sounds more like a full dotfiles NixOs integration and there are some things that is nice to be added but many of them will only work for Hyprland or go out of scope of the shell itself (ex, systemd service may fail or limit the shell if the compositor don't export the vars correctly, fish integration, theme config and etc)

i think it would be possible (although difficult) to make a nixos module for the entire dotfiles that also enables hyprland and the necessary packages and services
but it will most likely cause a lot of headaches both for the one who wrote the module and the users because of conflicts with their existing settings

but even that would in case of the the entire dotfiles and not just the shell

that's why i'm thinking that this issue(or rather request) should be either moved to the main caelestia repo or be closed from here

since the existing home-manager module and the package is enough for the shell's support in nixos

The owner's intention is to make the shell the most compatible possible, so a nixos module to enabling Hyprland is out of question in this repo, and the owner itself is not a NixOS user as far as I know (but I think he uses home-manager in Arch, though)

I think some user may make a dotfiles configuring caelestia in NixOS, maybe their own config. I don't do this because my dotfiles is am absolute mess that I don't even push to github anymore and I have no time to rewrite it all

that's why i'm saying this issue still being open is kinda pointless because the if the request is to make a module for configuring the shell in nixos it is already done by the home-manager module

and if it is to enable and configure hyprland and other relative programs via a custom module served as a flake
then it's outside of the scope of this project(the shell)

p.s: i think he (the owner) doesn't even use home-manager, since he said it on the pr i made

Understood, you are correct. About the owner, I assumed it because he seems to know decently about Nix and somehow in the latest changes he did a commit that broke the shell for many ppl that uses Arch but it has working fine om Nix

yeah i've seen that there are some problems with the latest commits(i think it had something to do with the plugin being added),but i did update to the latest version anyways and i haven't ran into any issues
