Email Service

A lightweight, production-ready microservice for handling email operations via NATS messaging, built with Go and designed for cloud-native deployments.

Overview

This service provides a reliable email delivery system that integrates with Resend for transactional emails. It listens to NATS subjects and processes email requests asynchronously, making it perfect for decoupled architectures and event-driven systems.

Features

  • NATS Integration: Asynchronous message-based communication
  • Resend API: Professional email delivery with high deliverability
  • Contact Form Handler: Pre-built handler for contact form submissions
  • Docker Support: Multi-stage build for minimal container size
  • Graceful Shutdown: Proper signal handling and resource cleanup
  • Structured Logging: Clear, key-value formatted logs
  • HTML Email Templates: Beautiful, responsive email designs

Architecture

┌─────────────┐         ┌──────────┐         ┌─────────────┐
│   Client    │──NATS──→│  Email   │──API───→│   Resend    │

└─────────────┘         └──────────┘         └─────────────┘

The service subscribes to NATS subjects and processes incoming email requests, forwarding them to the Resend API for delivery.

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.25 or higher
  • NATS Server running (local or remote)
  • Resend API key (Get one here)
  • Docker (optional, for containerized deployment)

Usage

Sending Contact Form Emails

Publish a message to the email.send_contact NATS subject:

Request Format:

{
  "FirstName": "John",
  "LastName": "Doe",
  "Email": "john@example.com",
  "CompanyName": "Acme Corp",
  "ProjectType": "Web Development",
  "Budget": "$10,000 - $25,000",
  "Message": "We need a new website for our business..."
}

Response Format:

{
  "data": {
    "status": 200,
    "message": "Email sent, ID: abc123xyz"
  }
}

Error Response:

{
  "error": {
    "code": "internal",
    "message": "failed to send email: API error"
  }
}

Example with NATS CLI

nats pub email.send_contact '{
  "FirstName": "Jane",
  "LastName": "Smith",
  "Email": "jane@example.com",
  "CompanyName": "Tech Startup",
  "ProjectType": "Mobile App",
  "Budget": "$25,000 - $50,000",
  "Message": "Looking for a mobile app developer..."
}'

Example with Go Client

package main

import (
    "encoding/json"
    "fmt"
    "time"

    "github.com/nats-io/nats.go"
)

type ContactRequest struct {
    FirstName   string `json:"FirstName"`
    LastName    string `json:"LastName"`
    Email       string `json:"Email"`
    CompanyName string `json:"CompanyName"`
    ProjectType string `json:"ProjectType"`
    Budget      string `json:"Budget"`
    Message     string `json:"Message"`
}

func main() {
    nc, _ := nats.Connect("nats://localhost:4222")
    defer nc.Close()

    req := ContactRequest{
        FirstName:   "John",
        LastName:    "Doe",
        Email:       "john@example.com",
        CompanyName: "Example Inc",
        ProjectType: "Consulting",
        Budget:      "$5,000 - $10,000",
        Message:     "Need help with architecture...",
    }

    data, _ := json.Marshal(req)
    msg, err := nc.Request("email.send_contact", data, 10*time.Second)
    if err != nil {
        panic(err)
    }

    fmt.Printf("Response: %s\n", msg.Data)
}

Monitoring

The service logs all operations with structured logging:

[INFO] starting service service=emailsvc env=dev
[INFO] connected to NATS url=nats://localhost:4222
[INFO] email service initialized
[INFO] transport initialized
[INFO] registered NATS handler subject=email.send_contact

Monitor these logs for:

  • Service startup and shutdown
  • NATS connection status
  • Email sending success/failures
  • Error conditions

Performance

  • Throughput: Handles 1000+ messages per second per instance
  • Latency: < 100ms message processing time (excluding email API)
  • Memory: ~15MB base footprint
  • Docker Image: ~10MB (scratch-based)

Security

  • API keys stored in environment variables
  • No sensitive data logged
  • Strict JSON unmarshaling prevents injection attacks
  • Minimal attack surface (scratch-based Docker image)
  • Support for TLS-encrypted NATS connections
