GoldenEye 007 — native macOS build (Apple Silicon)

The N64 game running natively on macOS. Not an emulator: the game's original
code is translated into native ARM machine code and runs directly on your CPU,
rendered through Metal.

You need your own ROM

This app contains no game code and no game assets. You must supply a retail
GoldenEye 007 NTSC-U cartridge dump (.z64, .v64 and .n64 also accepted).
On first launch it asks for your ROM, converts it, and recompiles the game from it
in memory — a couple of seconds, once.

Install

  1. Download the zip and unzip it
  2. Drag GoldenEye 007 Recompiled.app to your Applications folder
  3. Right-click the app → Open → Open. macOS blocks it on first launch because
it isn't notarized. After that, it opens normally.

Requirements

  • macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon
  • Your own NTSC-U GoldenEye 007 ROM dump

What works

Full intro, menus, file select, briefings, missions, audio, controller support,
frame interpolation to your display's refresh rate, and widescreen.

Known issues

  • Skyboxes render black and water is flat (also true of the Windows build — the
game draws these with custom microcode the renderer doesn't implement yet)
  • Multiplayer UI is incomplete
  • Some weapons fire faster than they should

Building it yourself

Instructions for macOS and Linux are in the README. Linux builds from the same
source; there's no prebuilt Linux binary in this release.
