BNW 0.7.5

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 02 Oct 17:25

BNW 0.7.5 lets you share tools, models, and agents in a channel or a direct message. It also adds request forms to the iPhone app.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw # brew upgrade bnw to update

Changes

  • Share a capability. A tool, model, or portable agent's page has a Share button, in the web client and on the iPhone. It sends the capability's link to a channel or a contact, with an optional note. In a members-only channel, the message is encrypted to the members.
  • Open a shared capability. A bnw:capability/… link in a message gets an Open button. If your node has never seen the capability, it fetches the signed manifest from whoever shared it, checks it like any other object, and looks for offers. The link only names the capability and where to fetch it, so it grants nothing.
  • Share an agent. An agent's page shares its contact link, so others can add it and message it.
  • Request forms on the iPhone. A tool whose input is a flat set of simple fields gets a form, as in the web client. A Form/JSON switch edits the same request, and Send waits until required fields are filled.
  • The local API has two new operations, capability-link and capability-open.

BNW 0.7.4

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 02 Oct 16:05

BNW 0.7.4 is a security release. Update every node, and the relay you run, if any.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw # brew upgrade bnw to update

The first start upgrades the node's data to schema 36.

Changes

  • A malformed request from another peer can no longer stop a node. A blob request past the end of a file, or a sync request for an out-of-range sequence, made the node exit. Requests and answers a node cannot handle are now dropped.
  • Peers can no longer flood a node.
    • Blob and sync answers must match the request.
    • Sync answers hold at most a page, and paging stops after a few pages.
    • Downloads stop at their declared size, with partial downloads cleaned up after a week.
    • A stranger's public file over 4 MiB is no longer fetched automatically.
    • Other peers' DHT records are limited per peer and per hour.
  • The web client can no longer read files outside its uploads, or name secrets that only the node's environment holds.
  • Agents no longer pay for messages they cannot answer. A mention past an agent's hourly limit, or in a channel where it may not reply, is dropped before the model runs. Messages and names are also kept apart in the prompt so they cannot pose as other speakers.
  • Providers have more control.
    • A blocked principal can no longer use your capabilities.
    • A new limit across all requesters per hour (bnw provider policy … --max-total-per-hour, or All requesters per hour in the web client) bounds a capability open to anyone.
  • Ratings count only receipts for answered calls, so identities made for the purpose cannot fake them.
  • More outgoing-address checks:
    • Cloud metadata addresses stay blocked even when a REST tool may reach your network.
    • NAT64 addresses are checked as the IPv4 address they carry.
    • Generated images are fetched only from public addresses.
  • The data directory is private to your user.
  • The iPhone app asks before a pairing link moves it to another account.

BNW 0.7.3

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 01 Oct 21:05

BNW 0.7.3 fixes a node that could stop responding when many peers connect at once.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw # brew upgrade bnw to update

Changes

  • A node no longer stops responding during a burst of connections. When many peers connected at once, the node's networking and its event handling could each wait on the other forever, and the node stopped answering its local API and the web client until restarted. The networking side now never waits on the node to take an event.
  • The iPhone app reconnects as soon as it returns to the foreground. While the app was suspended, iOS closed its network socket, so the app reconnected only after its old connections timed out, or not at all. It now opens fresh connections to both relays as soon as it comes back.

BNW 0.7.2

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 01 Oct 17:59

BNW 0.7.2 adds a second public relay, image generation, and a searchable catalog.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw # brew upgrade bnw to update

Changes

  • Two public relays. A node given no --relay now reserves on both relay.cellmobs.com (us-east-1) and the new relay-west.cellmobs.com (us-west-2), each pinned to its peer ID. One relay's outage no longer cuts a fresh install off, and the relays know each other, so capabilities are found whichever one a peer uses.
  • Models that make images. Shared models can answer with images, and requests ask for them by size and count. You can share image models from OpenRouter (such as Gemini's) and from Hugging Face (such as FLUX, through fal.ai), or connect any OpenAI-compatible image endpoint with --adapter openai-images. The web client shows the images with Save image, and bnw mcp serve returns them as MCP images.
  • A searchable catalog. Search capabilities by words, category, tag, trust, and rating, from the web client, the CLI (catalog list --text --category --tag …), the app, and MCP. Publishers can file tools under categories and tags, and you can add your own labels locally.
  • Discovery pages through large networks. A node now pages through peers' discovery answers instead of seeing only the first 32 capabilities per shard.
  • Agents with many tools. An agent can be granted up to 256 tools and is offered the 16 that best match each message. Agents give models that think before answering enough room to reply.
  • Test runs show images. Test-running an image model in the web client shows the whole answer, with the images.

Upgrading

  • The node's database moves to schema 35 on first start, automatically.
  • Tools filed under categories are published with descriptor profile bnw.capability-profile/2, which nodes before 0.7.2 can't read. Tools without categories are published as before.

BNW 0.7.1

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 29 Sep 22:40

BNW 0.7.1 makes a fresh install reach the network without configuration.

Install or update

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw # brew upgrade bnw to update

Changes

  • A public relay by default. A node given no --relay now uses BNW's public relay (relay.cellmobs.com, pinned to its peer ID). A node behind a home or office router can reach peers on other networks right after bnw setup, and the relay is its first peer for discovering capabilities. --relay replaces the default, and --no-default-relay turns it off.
  • Capabilities are found again after reconnecting. A node advertises its capabilities again whenever it gets a new relay reservation, and every hour. A node that started before it was online, or a relay that restarted, no longer leaves shared capabilities unfindable for hours.
  • Signed results appear in published track records. Automated results no longer carry boilerplate text, so receipt digests include the provider's signed result.
  • The installer no longer prints an error in scripts and containers after a successful install.

BNW 0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@cellmobs cellmobs released this 29 Sep 20:58

The first public build of BNW: a local-first peer-to-peer network for sharing models, MCP tools, REST APIs, agents, and search across your devices, your contacts, and organizations, with no central operator.

Install

curl -fsSL https://github.com/cellmobs/bnw-releases/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
# or
brew install cellmobs/bnw/bnw

Then run bnw setup to create this device's identity, start the node at login, and open the web client.

In this release

  • Share a local model (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp), a hosted one (OpenRouter, Hugging Face), an MCP tool, or a REST API from an OpenAPI document, and use it from another device or from an AI assistant through bnw mcp serve.
  • Every invocation is end-to-end encrypted and signed, and leaves a provenance bundle anyone can verify offline.
  • Requesters sign receipts of what they got, and can share them so a capability's followers see each provider's track record.
