Nice Shot 2.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@centimano centimano released this 19 Sep 00:13

Bug-fix and polish release after a full audit of v2.0.0.

Fixes

  • Your own capture panel no longer shows up in the next screenshot.
  • Callout bubbles stay visible while you type in them.
  • Closing an editor (or quitting) with unsaved annotations asks first; the title bar shows the edited dot.
  • Settings refuses a shortcut already used by another Nice Shot action and warns when macOS rejects one.
  • Menu-bar-triggered Region / Draw / Zoom wait for the menu to fade before freezing the screen.
  • Window capture gives the picked window a moment to redraw as active.
  • Region drags clamp to the screen edge.
  • Post-capture panels reuse free slots; second editor windows cascade instead of stacking exactly.
  • Pen and highlighter strokes are selected by clicking the ink, not their bounding box.
  • ⌘Z while typing undoes typing, not the whole text box.
  • Exports with no annotations or effects skip re-rendering.

Changed

  • Default shortcuts: ⇧⌘S region · ⇧⌘W window · ⇧⌘F full screen · ⇧⌘D draw · ⇧⌘Z zoom. Existing custom shortcuts are kept.

Install
Unzip, drag Nice Shot.app to Applications, replace the old one. The app is ad-hoc signed: right-click → Open the first time, and re-grant Screen Recording if macOS asks.

123 automated tests. Manual checklist in TESTING.md.

Nice Shot 2.0.0

@centimano centimano released this 03 Jul 01:57

What's new

Nice Shot 2.0 brings the useful parts of Sysinternals ZoomIt to the Mac — live screen modes for presenting, teaching, and explaining, alongside the existing capture tools.

  • Screen draw (⌃⇧D) — freeze the screen and draw directly on it with the full editor toolset: pen, highlighter, arrows, boxes, text, and more. Single-letter shortcuts switch tools (P pen, A arrow, B box, …), an 8-color swatch palette matches ZoomIt's, and ⌘C / ⌘S / ⌘E copy, save, or hand off to the full editor.
  • Whiteboard & blackboard — press W or K in screen draw to swap the frozen screen for a clean white or black surface for impromptu sketching. Fully undoable.
  • Frozen zoom (⌃⇧Z) — freeze the screen and magnify up to 8×. Scroll or arrow keys zoom toward the cursor, moving the mouse pans, and pressing any drawing key drops you into screen draw on the magnified view. Exports capture exactly what's on screen.

Both hotkeys are configurable in Settings, and no new permissions are needed — the existing Screen Recording grant covers everything.

Also in this release: fixed a dead zone near the screen-draw hint bar, a countdown stall during timed captures, faster multi-display snapshots, and a shared image-processing context for lower memory use.

110 unit tests passing. As before, the app is ad-hoc signed (not notarized): first launch needs right-click → Open or System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

What's new

  • JPEG export — pick PNG (default) or JPEG in Settings → Saving, with a quality slider. JPEG output is composited onto white (no black halos on window-capture shadows). The save dialog defaults to your preferred format; the file extension always decides the encoding.
  • "After each capture" action — choose what a fresh capture does: show the panel (default), copy to the clipboard, save, or open the editor directly.

81 unit tests passing. As before, the app is ad-hoc signed (not notarized): first launch needs right-click → Open or System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

What's new

Editor tool ribbon — the editor now opens with an Office-style ribbon: larger buttons showing each tool's icon and name. Collapse it back to the compact icon row with the chevron at the toolbar's right end; your choice is remembered. Clearer icons for Pen, Step, Blur, and Redact.

Auto-copy to clipboard — new setting copies every capture to the clipboard the moment it's taken (the post-capture panel shows a green "Copied" badge). The Copy buttons still work as before.

Shutter sound — plays the system screenshot sound on capture; toggle it in Settings (on by default).

Share sheet — a Share button on the post-capture panel and the editor toolbar sends the image to AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and friends. Editor shares include all annotations, flattened at full resolution.

Fixes

  • Settings window is now resizable, opens tall enough to show every section, and remembers its size and position
  • About panel opens in the foreground instead of behind other windows

78 unit tests, CI green. The full manual test checklist has now been verified end to end, including launch at login.

Install

Download the zip, unzip, drag Nice Shot.app to /Applications. The app is not notarized: on first launch use right-click → Open, or approve it under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. The first capture asks for Screen Recording permission (one-time relaunch required).

Nice Shot 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@centimano centimano released this 12 Jun 01:20

Same app, nicer name! Super Duper Screenshot is now Nice Shot. Built entirely by Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic's Claude Code) — see the README for details.

What's new

  • App renamed to Nice Shot — new app name, icon label, and bundle identifier
  • Because macOS identifies apps by bundle identifier, this update behaves like a fresh install: delete the old Super Duper Screenshot.app first, then re-grant Screen Recording on first capture and redo your Settings (shortcuts, quick-save folder)

Install

  1. Download the zip below and unzip it.
  2. Drag Nice Shot.app into /Applications (and delete the old Super Duper Screenshot.app if you have it).
  3. First launch — the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS will warn you:
    • Try right-click → Open → Open.
    • On newer macOS, if that's blocked: open the app once (let it fail), then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway.
  4. Trigger your first capture (⌃⇧4) and grant Screen Recording permission when asked, then relaunch the app. One-time macOS requirement.

Highlights

  • Region (⌃⇧4) with magnifier loupe, window (⌃⇧5), full-screen (⌃⇧3), and timed captures — shortcuts configurable in Settings (⌘,)
  • Frozen-snapshot region capture: the screen freezes while you select, so moving content can't shift under you
  • Post-capture panel: edit, save, copy, or discard
  • Markup editor: arrows, shapes, pen, highlighter, text, callouts, step badges, blur, redact, crop, resize handles, undo/redo
  • Border / shadow / rounded-corner export effects; PNG with correct HiDPI metadata
  • Launch at login, quick-save folder, cursor visibility options
  • Single ~2 MB binary, no dependencies; 75 automated tests

Requires macOS 14 or later. Built for Apple Silicon. To build from source (Intel Macs included), see the README — all you need is the free Xcode Command Line Tools.
